I spent many a Trivia NIght here back in the day.

The weirdest thing about this place is that is has eight different beers on any given day, and usually at least half of them are lagers. For example, the Rough Rider Red is basically a modified Irish Red Ale brewed with a strain of lager yeast, and definitely an interesting take on the style.

I like the glass cases that let you see the brewing equipment. Always soild. The place itself is a bit on the small side, but it's fairly cozy. It is clean and is (thankfully) not garishly decorated the way many places are.

The quality of the beer is pretty decent, but this varies largely on what you order. It took us a couple times to try all of them (except the Vienna Lager, which I think they don't make anymore... maybe they were just always out of it). Anyway, there are a couple really solid beers there. Mary P's Porter is a really solid choice, and the S.O.B. had a lot more personality than I typically find in a Bitter. But overall, there's nothing there that'll really knock your socks off or make it worth a trek there just to try the place.

Still... if you're in the area and are looking for a decent micro pub, you could do one hell of a lot worse. Also, it's right on Rt. 9, which makes it incredibly easy to get to, and get back to wherever you're going.

What food I have had there has always been good, although over-priced. Your best bet is splitting a BBQ chicken pizza with a friend.

Stopped by for an early dinner and some beers after a trip to nearby Val Kill, Eleanor Roosevelt's home. It is literally right across Rt 9 from the FDR home and library. As you walk in you see the copper kettles in the window, always a good sign. We were seated right away, in the dining area. There is a decent sized bar area, with a couple of big TVs for sports, on the left as you enter. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, and we ordered a flight of six 4 ounce beers that come in fun mini mugs ($14.50).

Overall the beers were good to very good; my favorite was the India Red Ale, Barrel 9 Oatmeal Stout and Mary P's Porter. My companion's favorites were the Winkle Lager & the Oatmeal Stout. I appreciated the laminated beer menu, which the waitress uses to place the beers directly on their descriptions. Makes it easy to know exactly what you are drinking. Just wish they had the abv% listed on the menu. Growler fills are available.

As for the food, I had a delicious burger, with potato wedge fries; and my companion enjoyed her lamb burger. Extensive menu with many beer pub favorites. The atmosphere was casual, low key. I am certain there were plenty of tourists such as ourselves, with the FDR home, Vanderbilt Mansion & Val Kill all within 2 miles, not to mention the Hudson River just beyond.

This is the perfect place to stop at after a day of sightseeing, or a day at work. Good beer and food at decent prices in a comfortable setting.

So this is a decent restaurant that has been around for awhile and brews their own beer which is is all alright, but unfortunately nothing special on tap as I do live close. Prices I think are average for area, it's not too fancy, more of a nice casual place, with decent sized quieter seating area and then large bar area where they sometimes have music.

The have basically the same 6 beers always on tap with one rotating dark beer which would be better if they had anything that really stood out since they haven't changed in years. It is nice in that they probably have something for most people but this place would be more for the average beer drinker that likes more then Bud then it is for a BA who seeks out beers.

Decent place to hang out and eat, but not a special beer place I guess is bottom line

Wow I really loved this place! The decor reminded me a bit of a 40s style home- in line with the FDR and Hyde Park theme. The waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. The cheddar cheese lager soup was one of the best I've ever had. Had a flight sampler- especially liked Rough Rider Red and Von Schtupps. Grilled Knockwurst was perfect. Really wish they were a lot closer!

I stopped into the Hyde Park Brewery in Sept of 2011. I was in Poughkeepsie on business and had heard about this small brew pub. I had a flight of their beers and a sandwich. Both were very good. The atmosphere is very comfortable for a craft beer lover. The vats are right over the bar but they have a separate restaurant for people who don't care to see the machinery that brings them their beer. I spoke to the owners for a little while about their business and wrote up a review on the Tristate Beer Blog : http://tristatebeerblog.blogspot.com/2011/10/hyde-park-brewing-company.html Enjoy!

When asked how I have tried a large variety of beer, I joke that it often just magically "appears" on trips (after researching several websites). In this case, Hyde Park Brewing did simply appear across the street from the home of FDR. After a morning of tours and contemplation of the New Deal, we headed to Hyde Park Brewing for lunch before heading over to Val Kill down the road.

Very nice stop on a Sunday morning for a brunch menu. Ended up having the pizza, which was a bit better than good. Six beers on tap, more or less German inspired mostly. All were solid beers, clean and well done--no flaws in the lagering. The Von Schtupp's Black Lager was smooth with enough depth in the taste to make it interesting.

Not sure how far out of my way I'd go for Hyde Park Brewing, but it was a great no-brainer stop while visiting a very beautiful and historic area.

Although it is located in Hyde Park - a tourist fueled town - Hyde Park Brewery has that home-town, I'd-hang-out-here-if-I-were-a-local feel. They have pint glasses engraved with the names of their regulars behind the bar and a staff that seem to know almost everyone.

The food at Hyde Park is outstanding. I had a cheddar cheese lager soup. Fantastic. Delicious. Unbelievably good. My traveling companion had a burger and a artichoke heart dip. He said the same. Great, great food.

Hyde Park brews it's own beer and we sampled a few. While I don't think their beer stacks up against bigger places, it is certainly nice for a hometown brewery.

I saw Hyde Park offers growlers to go and their staff really seem to know beer.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the beer here. The SOB and Rough Rider were quite good; on the lighter side, the Winkle Lager was also a refreshing brew.

Per other reviews - the interior is less-than palatial...but that hasnt generally stopped me from enjoying the overall experience (primarily focused on beer and service - which were both GOOD).

I recommend dropping in for a flight and a pint or two. The soft pretzel and scotch egg were worth ordering as well.

Note: as of this writing the exterior is undergoing major renovation - even looks as if the place is abandoned - fear not, they are open for business.

A: The inside of this place looks as if someone took an old sawdust-floor, truck stop-type watering hole and tried converting it into a brewpub. Unfortunately, aside from the rosy-cheeked, friendly patrons..and bartender...this place fell flat. I think I even noticed the silhouette of an old Bud neon sign on the wall, but then again that might've been my over-active imagination playing games on me.

Q: I honestly do feel bad when I pan someone or something in a review, since we can all appreciate how much work goes into making good beer, but these beers were terrible...with the exception of the Von Schtupp's schwarzbier. With the latter exception, all were thin, headless, and bland. The schwarzbier did reveal nice notes of roasted malt, thicker body, and a creamier mouthfeel.

SRV: The bartender was sweet, but came off as, dare I say, airy...even comparing one of the beers in the sampler to a Coors Light. 'Nuff said.

SEL: Schwarzbier, stout, wheat beer, amber ale, etc...it was a decent selection, but two of the 'usual' beers were out, and the bartender substituted them in my sampler by mixing a few of the others. Needless to say, something terrible mixed with something terrible, tastes like something terrible.

F: Didn't bother.

We won't be going back.

Located on the east side of Route 9 in historic Hyde Park, NY. The building appears to be a converted country home of some sort, perhaps dating back to the mid 19th Century.

Upon pulling into the parking lot I was met with the unmistakable odor of raw sewage. Not a good start.

The bar is located to the left upon entering and the very casual looking dining room to the right rear. The bar area was large with a two sided long bar. Plenty of TVs as well.

There were about 6 house beers on tap and a seasonal that was admittedly a mix of two other beers literally done by the bartender at the tap.

The beers were generally shallow and lacking in flavor and body. Very little to no head. With the exception of the pils, all were pretty lackluster.

Would not repeat unless I was in the area and a high gravity seasonal beer was offered.

As many have stated this used to be a great place to get a fresh tasty beer and sit around on a Friday night. A real cheers everyone knows you type of establishment.

Then they opened another location North of here and to pay for it they raised the prices and the quality of the place went down. The beer does not have the same bite it once had and the food quality is not worth the inflated prices one now has to pay.

The beer I usually choose is the Big Easy Blonde which used to have a complex character. Now it tastes like a slightly hopped Coors Light.

Because of it's location across from a national landmark (the FDR Estate) it does a fair amount of business and waiting for a table may be hard during the touristy months.

I wish the management would sit down and re-evaluate this location and maybe change things up a bit from both the food standpoint as well as the beers it brews.

I used to enjoy the Hyde Park Brewery years ago when it first opened. Nowadays, I think it's a place searching for an identity while trying to re-invent itself.

The focus seems to have shifted from "beer" to "food". I guess you can say it's now a restaurant that happens to serve their own beer. The venue has changed to a Steak House, which on the surface sounds really interesting, but I think they're trying to be too many things for too many people and have forgotten what made them special.

The beers are OK ... sometimes inconsistent. Unfortunately, there isn't much in the way of specials or creativity when it comes to seasonals.

Since this isn't the only BrewPub/Restaurant in the immediate vicinity, my recommendation is to go elsewhere (New Paltz) ... irregardless of whether it's beer or steak that you seek.

UPDATE:

I went back after a while ... thought it was worth checking out again (Jan 2008). I've heard a lot of horror stories about bad service, and unfortunately it was true.

I had good food, good beer, but was just completely shocked at bartender's attitude. I had a legitimate complaint, and she took it extremely personally. The manager handled it quite well, to her credit, but the bartender continued to be a complete mongrel (I had to use the thesaurus to find a politically correct word for B**&^%)

I waited, without exageration, in excess of 45 minutes for her to acknowledge my money and give me change (and this entire time my glass was empty).

She didn't deserve it, and against all my good judgement, I had her keep the change (approx 18%) to show I was going to be the better person.

Unfortuantely, unless I hear this is under new management or ownership, I'll NEVER return.

So, all the bad things I've heard from beer snobs to restaurant goers alike were all true.

What happened here? I used to really love this place. Good beer, good food, great prices. Five years ago, I'd drive over 45 minutes to eat and drink here. Ever since the change to the Steak House motif , this place has gone downhill fast. I now live 5 minutes away and won't stop in anymore.

Where do I begin? Before the change, the menu was spot on. You could find all kinds of food for under $10, which is average for a brew pub. These days, the one burger on the menu starts at $10 and everything else is extra. I could see this working out in Westchester, but this is upstate NY. They took a great menu and really screwed it up with this upscale garbage. If I want steak, I'll drive to the CIA.

Then there's the beer...come on already. I've stopped in twice in the last month with my future father-in-law and we've had to turn back our pints on both occasions, for the same reason: a nasty sulfur smell and a wicked infection taste (the Stout, the Shwartzbier, and the SOB.) Each time, the bartender was very friendly about it and would offer us something else (the Red Rider seems to be OK). What really shocked me was both times the manager was sitting only a few stools away from us and he neglected to come over to talk about the issue. Talk about poor customer service. The last visit, I heard him discussing the issue with the bartender. The manager said "Oh, that's because the beer stays in the lines over night, you have to flush some of that out." Give me a break. They have a nasty issue in their process somewhere and it needs to be attended to quickly.

In summary, this place used to be right on. It's really too bad that the Gilded Otter in so far away. Maybe Darren will purchase the HPBC and right all the wrongs. A guy can dream, can't he? As I jokingly stated to my future father-in-law...This place is dead to me.

It's a brew pub that sells food. Nothing more, nothing less. I did like the viewable brewing, yet the lighting is too bright for a place who's purpose for being is beer. The end product regardless of style was bland and generally had the same underlying taste. I expected more from a place located so close to one the finest culinary schools in America...The food is bar and bistro. That being said, what comes out their taps is superior to typical tavern, but is less then I would expect from a business that brews it's own on premises.

Being the ONLY option for any decent beer in Hyde Park, I find myself here about once a week. While a bit on the dank and dark side, the large rectangular bar area, with a few tables scattered about, is where we most often sit. I find that the dinning room lacks any personality whatsoever.

As other reviewers state, the focus of the brews here is on lagers. While all are decent, none tend to stand out too much. I find the porter to be one of my favorites. There is always a "Barrel 9" selection which is a special, revolving selection. Most often, these are the standouts. The alt. amber and the barley wine being two of the best that I have tried. The Irish stout is very good as well.

They also feature a bottled selection of macro crap, which I always find odd in a brewpub. It's as if they are saying that they are not comfortable enough with their own brews to win over the average beer drinker. This is especially odd when your brewpub specializes in rather easy drinking lagers in the first place.

There are no quality bottled selections to speak of.

Service is usually hit or miss. They seem to have a really high turnover, which means you are most often dealing with a bartender in training (though there are some exceptions, and the bartenders who have been there for a while a good). Even on a slow night, it seems like it takes a while for refills, orders, etc.

The food is not too bad. Good wings and other pub food selections. On Tuesday's they have $10 pizza and pitcher, which is a great value.

Despite my gripes this place is rather endearing and worth checking out, esp. if you are not looking for some sort of Imperial IPA or other extreme beers and just in the mood for a nice session beer.

4s across the board on this one. Went there for dinner and also sampled some of their brew. Nice building but kind of odd looking, kegs act as sign posts in the parking lot. I went at about 7pm and the bar was filled with folks 40-50. I hear it get younger during the school year with students from the Culinary Institute of America which is about 2 miles down the road. Their beer selection is all made about 10 feet from where you eat, nice glass window looking in on what seem to be copper tanks. I had the Chaos Dry Stout which stood up nicely to the Big Boy Bleu Burger. Service was good, nothing spectacular, but she was nice. The price is very reasonable pints were $4 if I remember correctly. Great place for a burger and a beer.

Don't let the outside fool you. What looks like a funeral home or an old folks home is the home to some very nice beers. I love the fact that they retrofitted an existing building with brewing equipment and it is working. THe brewery is visible, the walls do carry some breweriana. There are TVS, big ones if you are in to that. A seperate diing room leads you to believe you could be someplace else. A nice effort and a very historic town. Last place on a stop from a recent trip. I have been to the place in the past, and the beers seem relatively consistant overall.

Anyway, neat bar area with seating on all sides and the brewing equipment overhead. Boob Toobs are around as well as some games.

Beers are clean and easy drinking. I wouldn't expect anything too assertive here, but German lagers are rare and they have a couple of decent ones. Excellent pils.

Barkeeps have always been friendly and attentive.

I like the selection with 8 taps, and having 4 ales and 4 lagers when I was there last. I don't know if they usually keep this many on at all times though.

You would expect the food to be good, being across from CIA. Did not have much this trip, but what we did have was good: A spinach dip and some Chili and French Onion Soup. In the past I have had excellent meals here though.

Woth the visit, and only a short ride from Half Time...

There are usually about 6 beers on tap (Easy Blonde, Winkle Lager, Rough Rider Red Lager, S.O.B bitter, and a special brew or two), but with my luck, I arrived at noon time on a Saturday and they were out of everything except the blonde, pale lager, and red lager. Before I left a seasonal Santa Lager became available, but the Mary P's Porter I was waiting for did not.The beers are good and enjoyable.

The atmosphere is open, bright, and friendly. Staff was helpful and knowledgeable. I just had a burger, and my wife had a duck quesadilla, but the food was better than your average pub fare. The beer is extraordinarily well made: clean, flavorful, with no apparent flaws. They had an alt on tap that was very tasty, and the pilsner was quite good too. The beer selection, though, was a little lacking. They could have put some more challenging brews on the selection.

I guess I expected a brewery right across from a former U.S. president's home to have some stiff conservative air, but Hyde Park was nothing like that. I was in on a sunny afternoon, and while the TV was tuned to something "true crime" in nature, there was a light happy atmosphere in the few patrons and the servers alike. I sat alone at the central rectangular bar, and was treated very pleasantly.

I was driving that day, so I confined myself to the Chaos Stout, which was a fine example of the style, with no off notes. I ate a Greek Salad that was fine, but you cannot judge a brewpub's food on one salad. I also picked up one of the jewels of my glassware collection, a mug with a glass etching of Roosevelt's profile. I like when we can associate beer with everyday history.

There's lots of pretty country just to the east of Hyde Park... I definitely look forward to getting back there on my way through.

Exiled to Kingston, NY for a 2 week work stint, what do you do? You comb beerfly to see what's in the 'hood.
Met an old boss there for drinx last week. They've got a long rectangular bar that seems confined but it's because there's a brewing set up above the bar on a platformed area. Someone was climbing the ladder at the end of the bar to get up there as we sat there. Most curious. There's a separate dining room in the back and you can see the brewing equipment in a side room as you enter. Off the bar, there's an area where they have bands set up. The decor is mostly old brewery beer trays on the walls and a large collection of old beer cans lines the trim above the bar as well as stacked here and there. They have 4 full time beers there. The SOB (Special Old Bitter) was very nice, and the Rough Rider Red Lager was pretty good too with a nice malty presence. They also have a Barre 9 Brewer's Choice beer which rotates in (this one was a Pale Bitter Ale which wasn't too bad). And then they have a rotation of three dark beers, a porter, a stout, and a Schwarzbier. The one they had in rotation when we were there was the Von Schtupp's Black Lager (the Schwarzbier) which was absolutely wonderful). I drank that all night (like a viking!!!).
Didn't get to the food menu beyond having a giant pretzel although my buddy says they make great salads. Would love to get back there when they've got the stout or porter on.

Lots of cans and platters on display. Narrow rectanguler bar w/ seating all around with a small stage and a few tables in the bar area with a seperate, non smoking dining room. Brewing equipment is visable throughout the building; Brew Kettle downstairs, fermenters on steel cat-walk above the bar and copper ( all copper) serving tanks downstair behind the stage. Everything shiny and clean. Several TV's , jukebox, video games and darts for amusement, with live music a few times per week, predominantly Blues.
John Eccles is the Brewer, formerly of Mountain Valley Brewing( now Ramapo) in Suffern, makers of the Ruffian line of beers a few years ago. All beers here are clean, well made, brewed to style and for the most part unremarkable. The brewers preference is to make clean, well conditioned, accessable session beers and he does a excellent job doing so. I have never had a bad beer at HPBC. The brews are begining to get more assertive, and the most recent "seasonal" was a nicely hopped IPA. Winkle lager is a crisp, traditional German style lager that won an award at this years Tap NY festival. Big Easy Blonde is a very mild, slightly sweet ale made and described as a low alcohol session beer. Rough Rider Red Lager ( named after Teddy) is nicely red amber in color with a hint of crystal and vienna malt sweetness and a good dose of hop bitterness. SOB Bitter is my personal favorite, served via Guinness style tap aerator, dark amber, with good, if slightly thin and metalic hop flavor and bittering. Barrel 9 is a rotating seasonal, which is usually one of five " periodics" rather than seasonals. Chaos Stout is a Guinness clone and does a good job at the impersonation.
Food is OK to very good but entres can be a bit over priced. Bar menu offers several items from personal pizzas, Giant pretzels, wings and calamari, the dinner menu is a combination of both unique and standard fare. Being 1 mile up the road from the Culinary Institute of America helps keep a good chef in the kitchen.
A decent place to check out. Good for families and kids in the dinning room. Well made beer and good food.
