12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Crystal clear golden yellow, decent amount of lacing. Clean nose with a faint floral hop and cracker-like grain. Crisp and smooth, slightly assertive hop bitterness. Grassy herbal and spicy hop flavor. Clean but not as hoppy as I expected, good but it does not standout. Maltiness is a little thin, odd dryness in the finish. Not bad but it is sort of a one and done for me.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Pours clear straw yellow with 1 finger of head that doesn't go away and leaves great lacing

Smell: Bready and cracker malt aromas

Taste: Cracker with plenty of grassy/floral flavors from the noble hops

Mouthfeel: Crisp and just begs for the next sip

Overall: Wow. This really hit a good note with me. I love pilsners and this a new take that still remains traditional and within the style. Aggressive hop flavor but still balanced. This is the best new beer Spoetzl has produced in years.

I've always had a soft spot for Shiner/Spoetzl, with their quiet commitment to easy-to-drink, German-influenced brews. And, who knew, apparently they've been at it for 107 years now?! Congrats, guys! Now, on to the anniversary beer, which is, appropriately, of German descent - a hopped up Pils. But, made with generous helpings of, wait for it, Saaz and Hallertau! Imagine that - actually using traditional hops in a hopped up pils. No American C hops. No new wave/tropical New Zealand hops. Just good ol Saaz and Hallertau, and I think they work like a charm, offering some floral/lemony/grassy goodness. The pils malt pops up in the finish nicely, giving that distinctive pils malt taste (which, sacrilege though it may be, always tastes a touch corny to my taste, but in the best way possible). Body felt right on, appropriately spritzy, and it looked nice in the glass, the only thing wanting being a bit more head retention/lacing. Minor quibble, though - this is good stuff, and I'll be heading back to the store shortly for more!

poured from a 12oz bottle into a pilsner glass.

L- bright straw gold in color with a fluffy white head that settles into a thin lacing. Crystal clear with plenty of carbonation. a good looking pilsner.

S- hoppy aroma with a bit of malted barley in the back. lots of herbal hops with a hint of pine. pretty nice.

T- sweet, bready malted barley flavor quickly followed by a blast of grassy, herbal noble hop bitterness. a bit of citrus in there as well. clean finish. not as hoppy as an IPL or an imperial pilsner. This reminds me of a hopped up Shiner Premium, which I really like.

F- crisp and dry. very good.

O- another great lager from a brewery that has plenty of experience with them. recommended! would love to see this become year round.

12oz bottle into a Pils glass.

A: Pours a vibrant, clear light straw with 1/2" fizzy white head that recedes at a moderate pace. Retention & lacing are both about average-to-just-above-average for the style.

S: Delightful. Fresh bread dough cut with mild hoppy aromas. Subtle hints at sweetness, maybe a trace of banana. Straightforward, but pleasantly pungent.

T: Follows nicely from the nose. The bready character is again the star of the show, however the slightly beefed-up traditional hops (Hallertau, Saaz) really add an extra dimension of depth without dominating the palate. It achieves a fine, subtle balance between slightly sweet & pleasantly bitter. The mid palate features more of the banana character, along with a trace of black pepper. Finishes with a gradually-increasing (though never overwhelming) bitterness.

M: Light malty body married to moderate carb. Finishes crisp & clean. True to style.

O: I like this brew, subtlety is clearly the name of the game here & Shiner really seems to have nailed it. It manages to be fairly deep without digging too hard for excess complexity, it manages to be something slightly 'new' without balking at tradition. Very fine offering from Shiner.

I've mentioned previously how much I like Shiner's specialty beers, if not their year-round offerings all that much. Here's hoping that this new one is in-line with the other specialties.

L -- Pours a clear straw yellow color with a dense and firm white head.

S -- Mellow spicy, herbal hops and bready malt in the nose with some very light citrus and light DMS.

T -- Great balance of spicy hops and bready malts up front with herbal to sharp and bitter hops in the finish and aftertaste.

F -- Mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a light body and dry finish.

O -- BA has this listed as a Czech Pils when Shiner calls it German on the label -- and I agree it's more German in style (note to BA to follow). The bready malts in the nose, the soft and smooth body, the herbal hops are all very well done -- if not being just a little harsh in sharp bitterness, but at least the hops used are German in character without a "creative" attempt at using new American hops that turn it into a Pale Ale. Well worth a sample or three.

With pilsner emerging as my favorite style as I settle into my old age, I'm drawn to many. When they've got 'hoppy' in their name, don't try to hold me back.

This is a fine beer, close to a Bitburger, I suppose. But I wouldn't necessarily call it 'hoppy.'

That said, a fine thing coming from Shiner, whose pecan-walnut-prickly pear concoctions typically turn me off.

Appearance: Bright clear golden glass holds a halo of white head that doesn't lace.

Aroma: Classic Czech Pilsner profile, earthy sharp hops with a cracker base. Mild metallic edge.

Taste: Grainy wheat with a light tonic water edge, some blonde ale sweetness pokes through in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium heavy body, slick texture, medium low carbonation.

Overall: What impresses me is what this doesn't taste like: a Shiner. This speaks Czech and German, which is understandable given the history of that part of Texas. A beefy Pils, ends up a bit sweet for selling the hop side, but overall it's clean, crisp and refreshing.
Long live Shiner!

Pours a clear golden color with a 2 finger width foamy head. Head retention and lacing are both very good. Has more of an adjunct lager aroma. Biscuity. Maybe a little bit of some grassy hops. Not much, though. Biscuity and crackery taste with some grassy hops, but ends more in that adjunct lager taste. It is not bad overall, but wish it had a little more hops and a little cleaner flavor I like in a pilsner. Light bodied with moderate to heavy carbonation.

12 oz bottle with a special ed. twist off cap served in a lager glass.

Pours with a bright yellow-golden body that has lots of visible carbonation. The head is moderately large and quite durable.

Mildly pungent aroma dominated by Euro hops. Floral, grassy and herbal notes.

The flavor more clearly reflects some bready malts in addition to the grassy-herbal hops and a faint hint of citrus.

Light bodies with lively carbonation.

On tap. Poured into a pint glass. Subtle nose of pale malt and floral hops. Taste is a malt and pepper body with a floral hop finish. Medium-light body and medium carbonation with no aftertaste. Crisp and light.
It's an underwhelming pilsner. The bases were there but didn't follow all the way through. The birthday cake stout was a better birthday beer.
