Poured from a 12 oz. bottle. It pours a crystal clear amber with nice off-white head that lasted longer than I’m used to from Shiner. I was hoping for a bit of farmhouse funk, but there is none. It’s a little more malty than a Pilsner with a balanced bitterness. There’s a pleasant bit of rye spice and a nice clean noble hop finish. Not particularly complex but tasty and refreshing. I will be buying more before it’s gone.

I respect brewers who can obtain a lot of flavor in low-alcohol beers. Farmhouse Rye is surprisingly tasty for being so light a beer. A nice start to any session drinking when you're working yourself up the ladder, ABV%-wise.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on April 28, 2018.

It is a nice looking copper color with a lingering white head.

The aroma is caramel malts, sweet, but not toasty as one would expect from the style. There is a distant rye grain character and almost no hop profile.

Thin to light body. Not much depth here.

The taste tends to be caramel sweet and crackery. Little to no hop finish. This has more the makings of an ESB with less bitterness. It didn't do much for me.

Appearance: Bottle indicates it's hazy, I didn't rouse the sediments and so this is fairly clear, bright amber color with a thin white cover that gives up some lacing.

Aroma: Mild lime peel, yeast, and a hint of earthy hop.

Taste: Fairly mild, American wheat profile, I don't think this is a real Farmhouse or Saison, but I understand why it is sitting in the category. No funky notes, pretty clean and easy drinking, tastes like the house yeast. Very mild metallic note in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Light medium body, medium carbonation, light oil in the finish but pretty clean.

Overall: Shiner does middle of the road beers, and this isn't an exception. It has a dash of flavors that set it apart, but it's not going to offend or wow any one. That said, I can see picking up a six pack. It's a low abv full flavor beer.

Light, salted sticky caramel, lemon, grain. Drinkable, but a bit cloying.

The beer pours out a clear medium golden color, with 1 finger of white head------------------ the aromas are of light rye spice and malts, very boring aroma--------------- the flavors are of Carmel, spice and malt, the beer has a thin mouthfeel with a light bitterness on the finish----------------- overall this beer was ok, it was lacking in aroma and flavor not much going on taste more like a macro lager vs a saison--

Spoetzl Brewery "Shiner Farmhouse Rye"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, date coding is partially missing
$1.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Look: Slightly hazy deep golden/light amber body. Foamy bright white head. Better than average head retention and lacing.

Smell: Spicy, grainy, bready, fruity. Noticeable but far from bold.

Taste: Spicy, bready, and nutty malt is threaded through with light fruity yeast notes (apricot, lemon) and some grassiness, clove, herbs, and black pepper. Dry, spicy, peppery and herbal finish.

Feel: Light-medium in body and crisp with a fine-bubbled, gently effervescent carbonation.

Overall: An interesting beer that's light but with character.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) bottle into a conical pint glass; no production information available.
A: Pours a clear, amber color with a half inch, foamy white head, modest retention and spotty lacing.
S: Aromas of bread (particularly the rind) and caramel malt predominate. Malty, yeasty, and a little spicy.
T: Caramel malt, fresh baked bread, and macadamia blend into a nice melange. Bitterness present throughout and reminiscent of green peppers without the vegetal quality.
M: Light to medium bodied with persistent fine effervescence. Very crisp and refreshing.
O: Really a flavorful, nice executed rye beer. Would not hesitate to have it again.

It poured a yellow straw color with a large foamy head that fades but leaves a nice ring to the glass. The smell is of bread with a spicy note to it. The taste is light and refreshing , there is a bread and fruit taste (I think lemons).Overall easy drinking refreshing nice beer.

Shiner 109 Farmhouse Rye has a thin, off-white head, a hazy, deep gold appearance, with lots of bubbles & chunks, but minimal lacing. Aroma is faint- some sourdough. Taste is similarly faint, with mellow, toasted grain. Mouthfeel is medium, and Farmhouse Rye finishes crisp and easygoing. A very mellow item, here.

Drank this out of the bottle. Really nice flavors. Some rye, cracker taste, and some floral notes with it as well. Finishes very easy. Another good birthday beer by Shiner.

Golden pour with lots of effervescent bubbles and a one-finger white head. Grainy and bready aroma with a hint of spice. Taste has spicy rye and bitter earth flavors upfront. Yeasty pepper flavor is also noticeable. Medium bodied with a lot of carbonation.

I am SO excited to have this beer as my first entry on New Beer Sunday (Week 675)! This week's theme is anniversaries/ birthdays/the weekly get-together, so this is entirely apropos. I first discovered Shiner Bock on a trip to Dallas to see Th' Stillers play The Kowgirl Crimeboys at the old Texas Stadium in 1995. I was elated when PA began to get distro of their beers & even more so when the Birthday series began to appear. Hoppy beerthday, Shiner!

From the bottle: "Since 1909"; "Our Saisonal Seasonal"; "Made the Rye Way"; "Cheers to another year!"; "Here in Shiner, TX, we raise a glass to tradition. So, for our 109th birthday, we'e celebrating with a limited-edition beer inspired by the homemade brew enjoyed after a long day in the fields. Our Farmhouse Rye is made with Munich Wheat and Rye, then coarsely filtered for a hazy and flavorful finish. Enjoy!"; "Here's to 109 years[!]"

A low-gravity Saison with rye?!? Wotta way to celebrate a birthday! No matter as I Pop!ped the cap & gave it a heavy-handed, aggro pour since it was "coarsely filtered" and "hazy", plus it was a screwed-up screw-top cap & I was angry. I was shocked & angry when the head came rushing up. threatening to overflow the edge of the glass! I held my breath as it puffed up & stopped, forming three-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with great retention that finally fell away, leaving stupid lacing in its wake. Color was solid Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Hmm. Nose was odd, bready and slightly funky, but where was the Rye? Mouthfeel was kind of on the thin side, not exactly watery, but nothing to get excited about. The taste had a slightly funky breadiness, but I was really missing out on any sense of Rye. Finish was dry, which was a testament to the idea that the yeast had overcome the sweetness of the malt, but the Rye was a total no-show. I have to admit that I am disappointed by this one. Now, where did I put that bottle of Birthday Beer 108? ...
