Pours very dark, nearly black. Very little foam on the edges, with almost no head. It smells a little smoky, with dark chocolate and molasses. The taste isn't as complex as the smell, but contains malty and mocha notes without overpowering sweetness. Feels a little thin on the tongue, with medium carbonation. Low alcohol so it's not gonna kill your afternoon. Very enjoyable beer for what I paid for it.

Pours a dark chocolate brown. Great sweet smell. The taste is mellow/malty sweet. Hoppy it is not. However I am a big fan of these type of brews as I have stated in previous ratings. I bought a past- dated 12- variety pack of Shiner beers. It's still good even after a normal 6-month shelf life has past. I'm surprised Shiner Brewery's stuff rates so medium.

Poured 12 oz bottle to a Weizen glass. I've had this beer a number of times, I just haven't reviewed it yet; this being said this is a very consistent brew, every one has been the same since I had my first 3 years ago.
Look: pours a black-brown color, brown-tan head with a good amount of retention.
Smell: first I smell toasted malt, followe by bitter hops. Smells like a Schwarzbier.
Taste: Hot damn there's a lot going on in this beer. Beginning-middle-end: sweet/toasty malt-bitter- clean hop finish. Best way to describe all of the tastes. You have to try this beer a couple times.
Feel: medium light body, medium carbonation, exactly what you should expect for a black lager.
Overall: one of my favorites from Shiner. A quality, good tasting, drinkable beer that is a good representation of the black lager (Schwarzbier) family of beers. I had my wife pour one of these and a Kostritzer Schwarzbier side by side and give them to me. After a few tastes of each I started reaching for whichever one I wanted, and once one was gone, there was a third of the other left. The Shiner was gone first, it has a little something extra, more flavors to sift through. Good job Shiner, you won in my blind taste test.

Pours black with a finger of khaki-colored head. Certainly a light stout look to it. Lacing is totally absent. Aroma is malty, with specific notes of toasted, and bread malts. Oatmeal shows up as well. Flavor is a blend of flavors, or more so, a mashing of various flavors making it difficult to sift through. It certainly has a "dark" taste, with notes of toasted malts, oatmeal, and a hint of chocolate. Mouth feel is thin, and watery. It does have some carbonation harshness to it. Overall, it's a fine beer. It always feels goofy drinking something that looks so hearty, but feels and tastes so light. Still, it's an easy drinker.

Served in a 12oz snifter.

It pours a nice dark brown with a good head that really hangs around. Smell is of roasted malts and the taste is of roasted malts with a bit of coffee at the end. mouthful is full and refreshing and not heavy for a dark beer. Overall a awesome beer. I had it in a Shiner family pack but would buy this on it's own.

The first time I had this black lager I wasn't too hot with it but had it a second time a couple weeks ago and I think this beer requires a couple times of drinking it to actually like it. I paired it with smoked sausage and actually pairs really well. Love the roasty and dark flavor in this beer.

Dark brown with some ruby at the edges. Three fingers of five minute tan head. Some minor fine bubble lace.
Smell is roasted malts with a hint of coffee.
Taste is roasted or dark malts with a good balance of malts and hops. Slight coffee flavor.
Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. Finish is lightly drying with minor bitter ending.
Overall a well made beer. First time I've tried it. From a Shiner family reunion six pack.

Not too bad for the style. This is not a style I drink very often, but this was surprisingly light bodied and easy to drink on a hot afternoon. Still not great, but good.

Beautiful black color, just slightly lighter than a porter. The smell is malt with some caramel overtones. The flavor is pretty non-offensive, with malt, light hops, and a slightly Belgian-y aftertaste. Good but not great.

Dark brown color with gold highlights, khaki light tan cap.

Aroma of roasted malt with hints of chocolate and coffee.

Taste is smooth, almost mild, roasted malt up front. Mid palate chocolate notes appear with a bit of coffee at the finish. I believe these flavors were present from the beginning but build and become more noticeable by the finish. Just a bit of roast malt bitterness in the aftertaste. I don't really find hops at any point but Shiner beers are not highly hopped generally so their absence here is no surprise.

Texture is on the thin side of medium with just enough carbonation to notice.

A dark beer relying on roasted malt for flavor and that's pretty much the deal. Not a bad deal though, I can play these cards. These heavier flavors are easy to overplay but Shiner neatly keeps this one within the chalk boundary lines. I can say it works as a food brew, specifically with smoked kippers.

Nice beer with more taste than the bock offering by Shiner. Has a subtle coffee flavor but no aftertaste.

Was part of a variety pack, but I would buy a six-pack...give it a try

A nice dark color with a go head, a nice nutty chocolate aroma, taste is the same with a hint of coffee, which I don't like or drink. So for me this isn't something I would seek out, but was drinkable. good feel, not watery or to thick

Nice dark beer that lets a bit of light through near the edge of the glass. A very light tan head fades and leaves spots of lacing. This beer smells great. There is a faint sweetness and a nice roasted malt aroma. There is the reminder of coffee in the nose. The taste is solid and simple. A nice malt sweetness and slightly bitter roasted malt. The mouthfeel is nice and light. I really enjoyed this beer.

One of Shiner's better beers. Malty, roasted wheat, alcohol taste right away and throughout the drink. Dark brown like Coke with a thick, light tan head. Flavors overshadow the hoppiness, but there are some hops there. Good carbonation, average smoothness and thickness. Great beer.

Very good Dark beer! This is everything that I want in a dark beer! Ratings should be higher. It's not over powering and it's not over thick or over syrup. It's just right. Good job Shiner

Just wasn't at all happy with this beer. I would have expected a little much more from this company. This beer just happen to taste a little flat and not flaverable

12 oz. into pint glass. Poured with minimal head that dissipated quickly but left a wonderful black color. Taste was very very light and a little sweet. Surprising but refreshing.

12 oz. bottle into a helles lager glass

A - Beer pours a 2 finger high, off white, almost khaki, colored head that is foamy in nature (like skim milk froth). Head dissipates rather slowly. Beer is black in color with some red visible around the edges of the bottom of the glass. No carbonation is visible. 4/5

S - Dark toasted bread is predominant from the beginning. There also seems to be a bit of a cocoa powder aroma as well as a bit of light roasted coffee. Toffee and a very clean hop profile make up the rest of the aroma. As the beer warms a burnt toast aroma comes out. 3.75/5

T - Burnt toast along with its caramelization sweetness up front transitions to a bitter grainy maltiness in the middle reminiscent of cocoa power and light roasted coffee beans along with a hint of toffee. Clean hops with their associated light bitterness make up the tail end of this beer. Bitterness builds upon swallowing and lingers for quite some time. 3.5/5

M - Light carbonation burn up front transitions to a carbonation tickle by the end. No lingering feeling in the mouth upon swallowing. Medium light bodied beer that is very smooth and clean. There is a bit of creaminess to it as well. 3.75/5

O - For being a Czech style beer this is much more bitter for a longer period of time than I expected (especially having just come back from Prague 1.5 months ago). Somewhat creamy like Czech style lagers are but with a surprising amount of coffee, cocoa, and roasted notes. Some sweetness balances this beer out but this beer leans more towards the bitter side of the street. 3.5/5

Good attempt at the style, roast grains come through in aroma and taste. Not overly bitter or heavy, toned down for the American palate, still a decent schwarzbier.

My goodness, it's a Shiner beer in the variety pack that has some flavor! Surprisingly decent, with an oaky and cherry sort of flavor. Not the best black lager, but not bad.

Sampled on 12/26/15 but had this a few times before but never did a review on it. Comes in a 12-ounce bottle. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a 16-ounce Texas-style 'Das Boot'.

Brew pours close to a pitch-black in color with a good 3-finger foamy off-white head. A decent amount of lacing is seen when sipped. Aroma is of dark roasted malts with a light hint of brewers licorice. Bit more going on with the taste as there is a hint of dark fruits, black pepper, brown sugar and maybe nuts. Goes down pretty easy with no harsh aftertaste or bitterness for the most part. Slightly watered-down but a good brew nevertheless. Lighter-side of medium-bodied with decent carbonation.

Not impressed I'm a porter/stout guy but this beer tasted and smelled like tar weird after taste. After a while it just started to taste like a macro-lager rather than a bad dark beer. Overall disappointed in this would not buy again even in the variety pack that I got it in.

Pours deep dark reddish brown, though clear. Like molasses, in low lighting. Golden-brown fluffy, uniform head, moderate retention, weak lace. Very tart smelling, more fruity than smoky, but also molasses and toffee. Taste is extremely fruity and tart, like plums or black cherries, and yet watered down and balanced by roasty, toasty, nutty malt character. Not much in the brown sugar category beyond toffee in the finish. Surprising light black pepper in the aftertaste as well. Medium-bodied, very sudsy, crisp for how sweet it is, hardly astringent at all.

One of the few Shiner beers I've been disappointed in. The black licorice taste is not for me, and that is on top of it tasting a little weak overall. Similar to Guinness but only enough to make me wish I was drinking a Guinness instead.
