Very good Dark beer! This is everything that I want in a dark beer! Ratings should be higher. It's not over powering and it's not over thick or over syrup. It's just right. Good job Shiner

Just wasn't at all happy with this beer. I would have expected a little much more from this company. This beer just happen to taste a little flat and not flaverable

12 oz. into pint glass. Poured with minimal head that dissipated quickly but left a wonderful black color. Taste was very very light and a little sweet. Surprising but refreshing.

12 oz. bottle into a helles lager glass

A - Beer pours a 2 finger high, off white, almost khaki, colored head that is foamy in nature (like skim milk froth). Head dissipates rather slowly. Beer is black in color with some red visible around the edges of the bottom of the glass. No carbonation is visible. 4/5

S - Dark toasted bread is predominant from the beginning. There also seems to be a bit of a cocoa powder aroma as well as a bit of light roasted coffee. Toffee and a very clean hop profile make up the rest of the aroma. As the beer warms a burnt toast aroma comes out. 3.75/5

T - Burnt toast along with its caramelization sweetness up front transitions to a bitter grainy maltiness in the middle reminiscent of cocoa power and light roasted coffee beans along with a hint of toffee. Clean hops with their associated light bitterness make up the tail end of this beer. Bitterness builds upon swallowing and lingers for quite some time. 3.5/5

M - Light carbonation burn up front transitions to a carbonation tickle by the end. No lingering feeling in the mouth upon swallowing. Medium light bodied beer that is very smooth and clean. There is a bit of creaminess to it as well. 3.75/5

O - For being a Czech style beer this is much more bitter for a longer period of time than I expected (especially having just come back from Prague 1.5 months ago). Somewhat creamy like Czech style lagers are but with a surprising amount of coffee, cocoa, and roasted notes. Some sweetness balances this beer out but this beer leans more towards the bitter side of the street. 3.5/5

Good attempt at the style, roast grains come through in aroma and taste. Not overly bitter or heavy, toned down for the American palate, still a decent schwarzbier.

My goodness, it's a Shiner beer in the variety pack that has some flavor! Surprisingly decent, with an oaky and cherry sort of flavor. Not the best black lager, but not bad.

Sampled on 12/26/15 but had this a few times before but never did a review on it. Comes in a 12-ounce bottle. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a 16-ounce Texas-style 'Das Boot'.

Brew pours close to a pitch-black in color with a good 3-finger foamy off-white head. A decent amount of lacing is seen when sipped. Aroma is of dark roasted malts with a light hint of brewers licorice. Bit more going on with the taste as there is a hint of dark fruits, black pepper, brown sugar and maybe nuts. Goes down pretty easy with no harsh aftertaste or bitterness for the most part. Slightly watered-down but a good brew nevertheless. Lighter-side of medium-bodied with decent carbonation.

Not impressed I'm a porter/stout guy but this beer tasted and smelled like tar weird after taste. After a while it just started to taste like a macro-lager rather than a bad dark beer. Overall disappointed in this would not buy again even in the variety pack that I got it in.

Pours deep dark reddish brown, though clear. Like molasses, in low lighting. Golden-brown fluffy, uniform head, moderate retention, weak lace. Very tart smelling, more fruity than smoky, but also molasses and toffee. Taste is extremely fruity and tart, like plums or black cherries, and yet watered down and balanced by roasty, toasty, nutty malt character. Not much in the brown sugar category beyond toffee in the finish. Surprising light black pepper in the aftertaste as well. Medium-bodied, very sudsy, crisp for how sweet it is, hardly astringent at all.

One of the few Shiner beers I've been disappointed in. The black licorice taste is not for me, and that is on top of it tasting a little weak overall. Similar to Guinness but only enough to make me wish I was drinking a Guinness instead.

Pours a pitch black color with a very thick foamy head. Head retention and lacing are both excellent. Aroma of dark malts that is moderately nutty and mildly chocolatey. Dark malty taste that is watery with a nutty aftertaste at the end. Maybe some coffee. Mild hoppy bitterness. Not a bad beer and definitely drinkable. One of Shiner's better offerings.

This is actually a reasonably good beer. The aroma is roasty and malty. Earthy taste, balance, grain, and coffee. There is a moderate bitterness and some sweetness in the mid taste. Medium in body.

This was the most disappointing beer in the Shiner Reunion pack.

Yes, it's dark. No complaints there. But everything else is just kinda meh. It doesn't smell substantial, it tastes simultaneously really watery and really burnt, it feels soda-like, and overall it just wasn't all that enjoyable. It's not bad, I'm not saying it's bad; nothing I've had from Shiner has been bad. I really like Shiner, I just don't like this offering.

Poured fron a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Beautiful black color. Everything else was downhill. Smell was weak barley, taste was a watery malt with very little undertones of any other variety. Mouthfeel is way too watery for a dark beer like this. This one is okay but not fantastic.

I was disappointed by this beer, perhaps I crave more of a caramel flavor from my darks. I felt it had a slight chemical odor and an unpleasant lingering after taste. The flavor balance just seemed off. But that's just the opinion of a novice reviewer.

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours fairly crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, light dark fruit, herbal, light pepper, and roasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, light dark fruit, herbal, light pepper, and roasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, herbal, light pepper, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors with zero yeast ester notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly creamy/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a very good schwarzbier style. All around good robustness and balance of roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

12 oz bottle, pint glass

A – Light black with some brown. Off white foam of less than an inch, with moderate retention.

S – Black malt and roasted malt, but not bitter at all. Very clean. Some light noble hops, herbal and floral. Chocolate becomes present as the beer warms.

T – Chocolate and roasty malt, like black bread. Very low herbal hop flavor, very low hop bitterness.

M – Moderate carbonation and a medium-thin body. Mostly dry throughout, with very little sweetness or bitterness. Finishes clean.

O – A very drinkable, sessionable beer.

12oz into a pint.

A: Nearly opaque black, hints of deep amber. 1/3" off-white head recedes quickly. Retention & lacing OK.

S: Toasty & bready, a little black coffee, licorice. All the aromas are pretty mild here.

T: Coffee & multigrain bread, a bit of cocoa, surprisingly robust & resinous hop character hiding out here. A bit more of that licorice.

M: Soapy with low/med. carb. Actually pretty hefty, semi-filling.

O: Extra points for how the use of hops in this brew really uplifts an otherwise monotone palate. I like it.

Decently carbonated black with nice head. Maybe I'm a little blocked up right now but no smell at all. Almost tastes like a malt soda lol. Tons of carbonation but smooth and tasty.

Exactly what I would expect from a black lager/schwarzbier. Poured nice & dark. Froathy light tan head with light lacing. Smells of light metal and a bit of fruit? Tastes like a schwarzbier lol. Very light bodied and easy to drink. A good all day drinker for me.

4/4...deep brown with touches of tan foam. Malty nose, hints of roasting, but with a sweetness beneath. Light taste, full of dark maltiness. Thick mouthfeel, very smooth. Nice balance of dark and light.

A: ruby brown

S: roasty, rich chocolate, malty

T: let down after the first two attributes. bitter. Nutty.

M: too watery, too much carbonation. Its essentially a bitter mineral water.

O: Definitely not false advertising since it tastes like its name. Black. Not going back.

Taste is roasted malt, sweet chocolate, and earthy/barky hops. Similar to an American black ale. The body is too light compared to what I am used to for either style. This is not a bad beer, but falls just below average for the scope of what I have had in the style. Nothing I would skip getting a variety pack for, but nothing to rush out for either.
