12oz Brown bottle with twist-off cap. Possibly a "06 2014" bottled on date? Poured into a Stange glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear, Dark brown with 1 finger of head. This beer looks stunning in the sunlight with vibrant maroon tones at the bottom of the glass

Smell: Light toasted malts and slight floral note

Taste: The toasted malt note from the aroma comes up front with roast flavor building until the finish which is semi dry with some sweetness

Mouthfeel: Well carbonated with the finish preventing it from being too creamy

Overall: Its been a while since I last enjoyed this beer and it still is as enjoyable as I remember. This is a great beer when you want a dark beer with roasted notes without being too heavy. This is also a great alternative to those not wanting a nitro Guinness since it offers a similar dryness. As long as you don't go in expecting a full-bodied porter or stout, this is a great beer that I would love to pair with some oysters or smoked cheese.

Serving Type: 12 oz bottle poured into a glass mug.

Appearance: Deep, very dark brown. Good, foamy tan head with moderate lacing.

Smell: Mild roasted malt, very slightly smoky.

Taste: Roasted and sweet malt; some mild bitter and sour black coffee flavors.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, light bodied and moderately carbonated.

Overall: A bit too malty sweet to be very refreshing, but still easy to drink a few.

Appearance: Nice dark color with good head. Head was light tan in color.

Smell: Light malt aromas, but not a very much aroma.

Taste: Some malt flavors, but only a little hops flavor.

Mouth feel: Thin.

Overall: Average. Ok for casual drinking, but it does not have anything that stands out.

A: Motor oil dark. Amber hints when I hold it up to the light.

S: Fairly neutral aroma, which is surprising given the roast flavor notes.

T: Uncomplicated schwarzbier with a great roasted aftertaste. Crisp on the front end. This would be a good introduction to the style since it isn't too in your face.

M: Slightly syrupy when it warms up a little.

O: Enjoyable, but it's a little too heavy for me to want another one but it wasn't heavy enough to be noteworthy.

Bottle from the mixed 12 pack
Pours a solid dark brown with faint ruby highlights at the edges and a smallish off white head that quickly dissipates to nothing. Aromas of caramel and burnt sugars with just a hint of chocolate and a faint earthy hop to counter. The flavor is malty sweet with lots of darker sugars and melanoids and just a hint of earth, chocolate, and light fruit. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation. Decent dark lager, probably my favorite from the mix.

A: Poured a very dark brown with just a little red tint. Produced a nice mocha colored head, but that dissipated quickly.

S: Grain. Chocolate milk. Creamy and a little sweet.

T: Starts off very mild and Even a little sweet. A little malt body, but light. Tangy and slightly bitter roasted coffee finishes. A little syrupy sweetness of honey or agave nectar lingers long after.

M: Extremely light. Finishes mostly clean except for the little bit of syrupy sweetness aftertaste. Not a huge fan of that one.. Tastes a little like the brewer added some extra sugar to save some grain.

O: Nice and refreshing with a little bit of roast. Not a fan of the long sweetness at the end, primary downside. I think I'd say this is more like an English mild ale.

Poured from a longneck into a shaker pint glass. A moderate pour yields about 3/4 inch of a frothy tan head. This settles down to a solid ring and a thin creamy coating across the middle. The color is a relatively dark, yellowish brown with a bit of haze.

A very light aroma of bready malts is detectable, along with a kiss of herbal hops. Definite chocolate flavors, along with some pecan-like nuttiness and maybe a little brown sugar along with a touch of sweet chewing tobacco. Quite light in body and easy drinking despite the dark color. Semi-dry finish with a tingly mouthfeel and a lingering nutty bitterness.

A very quaffable brew with a surprisingly complex flavor that leaves a good feeling in the tummy. Purchased as part of a variety pack for about $8.50. I'm really getting into this variety pack from a brewery whose products just arrived in my town.

Appearance (3.00) : Small head, foam traces as you drink the beer. Black in color, but with light in the background you can see a dark amber color - almost like Dr. Pepper.

Smell (3.00) : Honestly? Initially I smelled a ham sandwich. With more examination, however, I noticed chocolate hints and cream.

Taste (4.00) : The chocolate hints I picked up on in the smell comes out a lot with the first taste. Very pleasant taste, and very smooth. The malts and chocolate really sell this beer for me.

Mouthfeel (3.50) : Very, very smooth. Plenty of chocolate and roasted malts. Very enjoyable, however, not as enjoyable or respectable as many other, more authentic, beers in this particular style.

Overall (3.75): A very drinkable beer in my opinion, especially in the price bracket that this brand falls into, this is a very good substitute for some of the more expensive beers of this style.

Picked up a mixed Shiner six to try the brewery. This one has a similar appearance to the others I have tried so far. They seem to all look the same except color. Same with smell. Not a lot going on there. But the taste is pretty good on this one. Nice roasted flavor and pretty smooth with no aftertaste. Overall I am finding the Shiner beers to be decent, and this one I would certainly drink again, although I also would not go out of my way to get by any stretch.

i actually got this black lager from a friend who didnt like it- but he's a bud drinker, so i knew that didnt mean anything. I think its pretty good. the color is dark- not opaque...there is an almost deep garnet color when you hold it up to the light. there isnt much going on in the nose at all, maybe some faint spices- but im going out on a limb for that one. the taste is nutty, not too bitter....with a surprisingly smooth finish.

Dark, opaque brew with a yellowish head that dissipates quickly. Minimal head retention or lacing. Slightly sour aroma. Smoky taste that is smooth, but didn't make much of an impression ... The taste is not something that would have me recommending this beer although I would drink it in the future if someone gave me one. Pleasant mouth feel -- creamy.

Aroma: Roasted malts, some chocolate, a burnt toast finish.

Taste: Slightly metallic, roasted grains, and a bitter coffee finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light in body, some carbonation.

Overall: Goes down pretty easy, good toasted and roasted malt flavors.

This is a decent beer, not great by any means and not nearly the best Shiner/Spoetzl beer I have had, but it is better than Shiner Bock, a total dud in my book.

Almost black, it has a medium tan head steadily shrinking to foamy ring, no wisps or lace.

Aroma is dark toasted whole wheat, prune, pine bark, licorice.

Taste is light, crisp, dry hint of licorice and molasses, prune, coffee but a bit thin and light, with faint sweetness and bitterness, dry finish with hint of coffee bitterness. It has enough character to keep it reasoanbly enjoyable for a bit but it is not memorable at all and can get tiresome fairly easily.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Thank you shan8454 for this one in trade.

Appearance: Black, with about one finger of a beige head. Mild lacing on the glass.

Smell: Mild smell of malts and hops.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth medium to full bodied. Taste of roasted malts, hops and mild taste of coffee.

Overall: Good Lager! I would have this one again.

not as dark and roasty and complex as the more authentic beers in this style, but a plenty sessionable dark lager that is still at least a step better than say the chive beer that just came out. more red than black in color, especially in the light, with a short lived inch of tan foam. nose is lager yeast and sweeter amber malts, i dont get much bitter roasted barley on this at all. there is a little more in the flavor, but this is still an extremely light beer for a dark lager. that and the low abv make it drinkable enough, but it finishes a bit sweet and a bit metallic, a real tun off. passable but not special.

Pours an almost opaque super dark crimson-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and metallic aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and char flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is drinkable but the metallic aroma I am getting is not too pleasant.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled November 9th 2013.

A: Pours a dark brown appearing black in the glass with a slighty tanned head sitting on top. Leaves some decent lacing behind as the head slowly dissipates.

S: Mild aroma with a nice malt background. Chocolate malts and yeast make up the bulk of it. Bit of dark fruit to it.

T: A well balanced schwarzbier. Get a dose of roasted malts and sweet chocolate malts as well as a lager characteristics. Touch of alcohol on the backend.

M: Medium body with low carbonation. Creamy aspect to it and a clean finish. Pretty easy drinking.

Overall a middle of the road schwarzbier with an ample dose of chocolate malts. Works well at the price point.

12 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. A new beer to me from the people at Shiner, Spoetzl Brewery. A schwarzbier, a style I am not too familiar with, acquired as part of the Shiner family reunion mixed twelve pack.

Poured into a Miller High Life pint glass.

A - Pours a dark cola brown color; opaque black in the glass until you hold it to the light, and it appears as a partially clear dark ruby colored body. Two fingers of thick tan froth for a head. Some spotty lacing. Looks alright for what it is.

S - Smell is fairly subdued, but nice enough for what it is. Dusty wheat, chocolate malt, some cream, and some artificial / medicinal smelling dark cherry.

T - Taste is of light char / liquid smoke flavor, some bitter chocolate malt, dark malt roast, some soggy grains, adjunct corn, wet paperboard, some metallics, and some dark fruitiness - cherries, figs, dates, plum. Not amazing, but well enough for what it is.

M - Feel is fairly thin and watery, but was to be expected. Medium-light bodied with decent carbonation.

Overall, an approachable, but probably bastardized rendition of the style by Shiner. Good enough for what it is, but nothing complex. Probably one of the better beers in the Shiner variety pack, but that isn't really saying much.

A: When viewed from afar, the beer appears black in color but upon closer inspection when held up to a bright light it is clear very dark red and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin tan colored head and a large collar that rises up near the edges of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of dark malts are present in the nose with notes of roasted malts.
T: The taste very much follows the smell but also has some hints of cola-like sweetness and very faint amounts of bitterness.
M: It feels a little more than light-bodied and thin on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very easy to drink and goes down easily but seems to be too thin and a bit watery. It's not a bad choice if you are looking for something you can drink a lot of but has some roasty flavors.

Appearance - A light bubbly tan color head; and it is a ruby black color to it.

Smell - The burnt sweet malts smell.

Taste - It is a burnt sugary toffee malt taste, with a hoppy bitterness that tries to sneak in.

Mouthfeel - A full-bodied beer, thick; a bit over carbonated.

Overall - I enjoyed this style of beer.

From the Family Reunion 6'er... foamy short lasting tannish head atop a thin black liquid.

Nose shows caramel and dark malt.. a bit of molasses... uninteresting.

Dark molasses.. weird malty fruitiness... roasty and still very watery.

The body is thin and too carbonated.. just don't care for it.

Poured a deep brown hue with a two finger cream colored head. There was very good retention and lacing.

The smell featured light roasted malts and a touch of sweetness.

The taste offered moderate sweet malts and a light roasted barley.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a nicely done black beer.

A- it looks like cola with a frothy tan head. No lacing.

S- lightly toasty, but pretty plain otherwise.

T- a little chocolate, toasty. There is a little bit of a hop presence in the finish.

M- light, watery, prickly carbonation.

O- it was light and refreshing, but very bland.

I hated Bock Beer.. funny how age changes one's perspective and taste buds... Shiner Black Lager is quite a decent entry.. not quite as good as Dundee Stout which I reviewed yesterday. Shiners has semi-sweet Chocolate and cocoa overtones, very Dark in colour.. almost Emo Black..
Thank you, Shiner.. Your Black Lager is helping me appreciate a dark beer which I wouldn't have touched in year's past.

Appearance: Clear, black currant (Black with deep red highlights). Pours with foamy khaki head that flattens quickly. Leaves lacy legs along side of glass, which dissipate.

Effervescent, yet settles into colored water before it warms.

Smell: Light plum and burnt molasses.

Mouthfeel: Light/dry with carbonation tingle.

Taste: Malty sweet, with a bit of raisin and molasses with lingering chocolate finish.

Overall: Could be more substantive. Taste needs a bit more balance as burnt finishing notes steal the show. Unremarkable.
