Shiner Kosmos ReserveShiner Kosmos Reserve
Notes: Kosmos Spoetzl knew how to brew great beer. Born in Bavaria, Kosmos mastery of German brewing carried him as far as Egypt before he found his way to the small Texas town of Shiner. Our proud brewery still carries his name and commitment to excellence in brewing. This full-flavored, hop-jacked lager is every bit as unique as the man himself and our way of saluting the brewmaster who started it all.

12oz bottle poured into Three Philosophers wine glass. Picked up during the COVID-19 pandemic from a grocery store for about $15 as part of a variety 12 pack. No discernible date anywhere.

Appearance - Pours soapy 1 finger off-white head with decent retention. Clear perfect gold body. 3

Smell - Soysauce, olives, old dank grass and maybe alcohol. Weird, rare property where I can't tell if it's appetizing or offputting. 3

Taste - Dank musky corn. Bitter aftertaste. 3.25

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied. A bit syrupy. Not particularly refreshing. 3.25

Overall - Not very appetizing at all to say the least, however, if this beer is competing within style with other American lagers, suddenly it's not doing so bad. Probably as good or slightly better than your typical macrobrew. 3.5

Pours a cloudy golden color, almost orange, not a very prominent head. The smell is that of an IPA, citrusy with hints of pine. The taste is pretty a pretty dry & hoppy with maybe some lemon or orange. The feel of this beer is pretty fizzy & goes down smooth. This beer resembles a less profound IPA, not to bitter, but a tad to light in my opinion.

From a 12oz bottle. Orange color with thin white lacing. Smells like malt and pine resin. Medium feel without much carbonation. Taste has a dry hop bite with some lemon and malt flavors. Like other hoppy lagers, this is a little odd.

Copper colored lager with very good clarity and visible carbonation.
1" eggshell colored head decent retention and settles in at a pillowy 1/4".
Lemon peel, floral aromas up front. Muted caramel underneath. More than expected here. Some pilsner qualities in the nose.
Same hoppy lemon notes swirled together with caramel.
Crisp, medium body, high carbonation and a dry-ish finish.
Surprised here. Enjoyed this more than expected...looks good, smells pretty good, tastes pretty good, finishes pretty good.

From the screw top bottle, it pours a nice clear amber with a modest white head that slowly dissipates. Light scents in the nose of malt. In the mouth, it is smooth, medium body and malty. Good!

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) bottle into a custom Samuel Adams glass; no production information.
A: Pours a dark golden to amber brown color with a one half inch, off white head, moderate retention, and moderate lacing.
S: Malty with aromas of grains and grasses, as well as a like cocoa note.
T: Caramel malt flavor, with melon and apricot notes. Perhaps nearly buttery. Light bitterness with leave a reasonably crisp finish.
M: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Creamy.
O: A fairly full bodied, American Pale Lager. Drinkable and held up pretty well to both Middle Eastern and Mexican cuisine. Butteriness raises quality questions.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a WIlli Becher glass. Best before 25 June 2018.
A: Three fingers of vigorous head with plentiful carbonation. Clear amber gold.
S: Skunky and metallic and generally unpleasant.
T/M: Soft, fizzy, malty-biscuity. Hops, if at all, are earthy-herbal-spicy and vague. Pretty generic lager. At least it's not too sweet.
O: Not great, not terrible, beery beer unlikely to offend beyond its nose.

12 oz. bottle poured into pilsener
(Sept. 3, 2017 born-on date printed on bottom of bottle)

L: clear gold topped by creamy, fluffy offwhite head of foam over an inch tall that is sticky up top and is coating the wall of the glass; not a ton of lacing on the way down, but it keeps a thick collar of offwhite foam

S: sour grain, yeast, dust, metal; as it warms can get real fruity sweet, peach and apricot with a little buttery sweet biscuit underneath

T: apricot, fruitcake, metal; toasted apricot, apricot kolache with cinnamon ... the cinnamon is something earthy, either yeast coming back and biting or the remnants of some old dirt hops

F: light midweight with enough carbonation to scrape paint off your car; the carbonation scrubs the front of your tongue then fills out the swallow

O: if the metallic flavor note didn't exist, this beer would be fantastic; it's loaded with good light-malt flavor and sweetness and a nice little bite from the yeast; overall

This beer is fairly sweet. The label claims dry hopping but I'm not sensing it. I'm getting a good bit of corn. It isn't a bad beer, but it certainly isn't shiner's best.

Very good beer, aromatic in the best way for a pale lager. I only wish it had more alcohol. With a bit of booziness, it could be a premium pickup; perhaps even tack on the name Kosmos Reserve to a barrel-aged line. Must I think of everything?

S: The aromas are moderate with a trace of onion, some citrus and light grains.

L: brilliant amber with rapidly rising bubbles under a 2" off white foam cap that takes 4 minutes to reduce to a thick film.

T: fruit, citrus, a hint of apple and light corn sweetness that dries on the finish. Most of the fruit flavors come from the hops but the apple tastes like it is from the yeast. The malt is medium low, the hop bitterness is medium and the hop flavors are medium to medium low.

F: medium creamy with a medium light body and medium high carbonation.

O: The beer has a nice balance of malt and hop and the onion from the dry hopping aromas quickly dissipate, leaving a very drinkable beer.

Not good not bad...haven't had shiner bock in a long time and decided to get this variety pack. Not much to say about this one. Nothing great about it...nothing that stands out either. Definitely an easy drinker and better than anything by Bud Miller or Coors.

Appearance: Golden; off-white head that turns to frothy thin layer.

Aroma: At first pour, it smells funky and off-putting. But then, it gets much more pleasant: Pale malts; light sweetness; clean; earthy hops.

Taste: Bready, like the crust of a French baguette; some earthiness, but no real hop bitterness. Clean, carbonated water. Fairly round.

Mouthfeel: Medium, nicely carbonated; almost fluffy like an ale, but light enough for the style.

Finish: crisp, clean, refreshing.

This is a really nice beer, especially for the style. If it were sold in packs on its own, I'd buy it again, especially for the warmer months. It'd be a great lawn-mowing beer.

Shiner's Kosmos Reserve is tasty. Taste is much like their other offerings. Smooth, mellow and laid back. Nothing stands out in this brew, but it's by far better than any American adjunct beer.

Nice balance of hop bitterness and caramel sweetness, malt heaviness and fine effervescence. Not quite crafty, but personality than typical high volume beer. Quite sessionable. I'll have it again.

Pours a amber color with more malty smell with a hint of the hops in it. The taste is a nice malty flavor with a suttle bite of hops. The mouthful is medium and resfresing. Overall a nice offering from Shiner with a malt lover in mind.

Clear golden amber with one finger of five minute white head. Some rings of lace.
Smell is mild malt and hops.
Taste is lightly toasted malts with a balancing amount of herbal hops.
Mouthfeel is light to medium with good carbonation. Finish is lightly dry and slightly bitter.
Overall a decent beer should be their regular product IMO.

This one was decent. It was probably the best one in the family 6 pack I bought for my bbq, but it was still a Shiner. They tried, but it wasn't great. Very malty.

Appearance: Clean amber, with a thin head of off-white suds and little lace.

Aroma: Malty, lagery, pretty average for style.

Taste: Malty and very much a lager in feel but there’s a significant hopping here, keeping it more interesting. Not a remarkable nor unique brew, but certainly drinkable and worthy of a session.

I buy Shiners quite often. It is inexpensive and easy drinking but perhaps not top notch craft beer.

(L) It has a fairly clear golden to amber color and a thick off white bubbly head.

(A) Malty, sweet and somewhat fruity aroma.

(T) It is malty, sweet, taste a bit like cornbread, and it is a bit tart. It is also somewhat bland but it is not as bad as the common mass produced bland lagers.

(F) It is fizzy, crisp and easy drinking, and good in the Texas heat.

Poured from bottle into Tulip, 1/2 finger cream colored head recedes quickly to a pool of foam. Look is clear burnt copper, with nice carbonation. Smells of malt, caramel and earthy/grassy hops. Taste is very clean, nice malt to start then I get that grassy hop profile coming thru. A bit of a caramel finish towards the end, this finishes a tad on the sweet side, not much, but not dry. This beer should be sold in 6/12 pack formats. Great mouthfeel on this beer.

A bit of Bohemia on the Prairie.

Points for being all malt and making a stab at hoppiness. Clean, crisp, brisk, more stuffing than the regular stuff and a thoughtful expression that doesn't step too far out of their regular customers comfort zone.

Good enough for what it is and interesting enough to seek out.
