Pours a clear orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. A foamy lattice of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, earth, and slight caramel aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, earth, caramel, and slight metallic flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of toast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is drinkable, but nothing really stands out about this one.

Serving type: bottle.

A: Pours a clear golden amber in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and some orange + deep golden yellow highlights. The beer has a half finger tall foamy white head that reduces to a mottled thin film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of toasted and grainy malts with a light amount of earthy hops.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of toasted grain malts with a hint of caramel and just a touch of sweetness. There is a light amount of earthy + spicy hops in the finish which lingers for a short while.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth.

O: Somewhat lighter in body and flavor than I would expect for the Märzen style. Seems a touch watered down and is nothing special though the alcohol is well hidden. I would not grab this one again though it was not horrible.

Appearance (3.75) : This one spilled over the glass on me. So you could say it has a pretty big cap. It was about 3 fingers before I sucked it off the top and then wiped up the rest with a rag. The lacing is webby and leaves cool patterns. The body is a festive autumn leaf color with a goldish bronze and is quite transparent.

Aroma (3.75) : Some nutmeg, clove, cinnamon spice, along with gourd and pumpkin flesh. Hint of brown sugar. Par for the course.

Taste (3.25) : Quite similar to Schell's offering, it is much like an amber ale. It's got a sour/bitter amber thing going on, and then ends pleasant with toasted malt and a hint of brown sugar. Slightly tangy on the tongue. I am not a fan of the taste overall.

Mouthfeel (3.25) : Crisp, dry, very slightly creamy. Ends with an oak-y dryness.

Overall (3.41) : A bit disappointed in this offering from Shiner. It's just too much like a stale bitter amber beer and doesn't have enough festivities in its profile to make it a competitive mar-zen. The finish leaves you with a pleasant true-to-style flavor, but the body itself is pretty poor. I'd skip this one and try a different Oktoberfest.
