Nice to finally see something from Shiner on the shelf that's not the Bock. This pours a copper to amber color with plenty of carbonation and ample white head. Good head retention. Aroma is nice and malty with lots of caramel sweetness. Hops are well-hidden. A very drinkable beer - smooth, toasted malts; sweet but with a nice touch of bitterness. A solid, well-balanced beer. Shiner should sell this one in its own six pack.

Poured into a becker a deep bronze color with a very well defined sticky one finger white head, just a nice pour.Toast and caramel in the nose, its a bit warming in its toast.Again toasty with caramel/biscuit malt flavors, the hops are subdued lending a light smack of herb in the finish.A solid alt beer,it might be a little light in the hops but the warm toastiness makes up for it.

Clear reddish-orange, with a decent head that stuck around for a bit then left some nice lacing and a thin frothy layer as it dissipated. Bit of toffee on the nose along with a faint hop aroma. More of the same on the palate, this beer has pretty distinct front, mid and finish, with nice hop bitterness bringing up the rear. The carbonation is nice and creamy, I really like the mouthfeel. A beer that goes down easy, but has enough going on to keep you interested even after having a couple. Also, this is the first Alt I have had in a really long time, and right now I am wondering why that is...

Shiner Old-Time Alt has a medium, off-white head and a clear, amber appearance, with a good amount of bubbles streaming up. The aroma is mild, and is of toasted, sweet barley malt. Taste is likewise of barley and toast, with some mild sweetness. Hop bitterness is subdued. The mouthfeel is light to medium, and Shiner Old-Time Alt finishes crisp, refreshing, dry, and delicious. I recommend it!

A - Pours a ruddy copper color with solid offwhite head and lacing.

S - Grainy aroma entices the taste buds. A little bit of nuttness to the smell. Aroma could be a bit stronger.

T - Sold grain taste. Hops are nicely balanced for a Alt. This is what an Alt should taste like.

M - Dryness is there, but definitely not overwhelming. Body is just about right.

D - Very drinkable beer. Could be a session beer.

O - Very good Altbier that is accessible to all. Will be coming back even though Alt is not my favorite style.

Picked this one up in a mixer sixer from Shiner. Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, beer is clear medium golden color which looks similar to apple juice and an off-white soapy head. The nose is a mix of fruity malt and citrus notes. The taste is similar with sweet fruity maltiness intertwined with a citrusy hop presence; there is also an off putting bitter, buttery finish. Mouthfeel is medium to full in body with a creamy, inactive carbonation. Overall, not really impressive or remarkable, won't be searching this out in the future but wouldn't turn it down if someone gave it to me.

Another member of the Shiner Mixed 12-pack. Old-Time pours into my stange with a color that splits the difference between amber and gold. A dense eggshell cap fades fairly quickly to a thin film and leaves a bit of lace.

Lemon and bittersweet toffee dominate the experience. Balance is good, but leans toward the bitter side. The bitterness itself carries a pepper bite that gets a touch metallic in the finish. A light and dry body has about the right fizz.

This is a nice Alt overall. Shiner has done a good job with this one.

Pours a copper color with a thin head. Smells slightly sweet and fruity with some orchard fruits, a light yeastiness, and even a touch of banana. The taste is also quite fruity, but there is some graininess to balance and a bit of herbal hops as well. More of that banana in the finish. This is actually fairly tasty. It doesn't have the bite that you usually find in an alt, and it isn't quite as dry either, but it's still relatively crisp and the fruitiness is quite pleasant. I enjoyed it.

A - Pours a copper color with a very fine but kind of small head. Pretty fine lacing. It lasts a little while. Lots of carbonation bubbles. Very clear.

S - Caramel malty smell. Very sweet. A little bit of hops at the end but it is overshadowed by the bready caramel. Pretty aromatic but nothing too special.

T - Very smooth taste thats full of malty bready flavors with just a hint of bitter. It's pretty good but not the best.

MF - Clean and light bodied. A little bit of carbonation but overall pretty smooth

From the mixed six and it's a decent beer. Nothing spectacular but ok.

A: Pours reddish-copper in color with a small off-white head that dissipates quickly, but still leaves a slight covering. It laces the glass nicely throughout the beer

S: Slight amount of sweet maltyness. Very clean smelling on the hop aroma, with only a slight detectability.

T: The is a slight amount of biscuit and caramel flavor to begin with, but quickly changes to display more of its bitter side. Very dry and bitter aftertaste.

M: Too much carbonation. It sits a lot heavier than it should.

O: Smell and appearance are very good, but the bitterness and carbonation are over done.

Appearance: Reddish brown color with decent white head that dissipates slowly, leaving some lacing

Smell: Some good malt up front, caramel, spicy hops

Taste: Caramely malts, spicy hops. Some bread in there. Very clean flavors.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, medium carbonation, dry finish

Overall: The best brew in the Shiner mixed 6 pack. Thoroughly enjoyable, too bad they don't make it available on its own.

A: Light amber with a one finger, creamy, off white head that appears to lace well. Lots of carbonation even minutes after the pour. This almost has the appearance of a dark cider

S: Toasty malt, caramel and an unexpected alcohol note. Hops are mild but certainly there.

T: Mostly malt, it's fairly smooth but has a light body. Nut flavor holds the middle together and bittering hops finish. Not too much complexity

M: Light bodied and slightly creamy, this is an easy drink. The finish is dry and to the point. The carbonation helps the finish

O: Again, this isn't a complex beer but it's a good selection. Straightforward malt and hop combo

Pours a light clear amber in color with a light tan head that has only mediocre retention.
Aroma: hops lead, floral and spicy along with a little malt, and maybe a hint of fruit esters.
Taste: Nice, just clean with a solid hoppiness , some sweet malt tones and a dry finish.
Drinkability is refreshing with some nice but simple character.

12 oz poured into a pint glass
I don’t know enough about Alt beers to really have an informed opinion. The only other Alt I’ve had was from New Glarus and it was nothing like this one at all. This is a very good and very drinkable beer. I almost enjoyed it as much as the NG Alt.
Look Amber body with a small head.
Smell not much a little toasty and spice.
Taste is about the same with some very mild sweetness in the middle.
Feel good carbonation and finished clean.
Overall a good beer that I wouldn’t get sick of. I could drink a bunch of these if available.

A: Decent amber color, minimal head and lacing.

S: Kinda hard to place, my best guess is some sort of herbal aroma that I can't figure out.

T: Pretty generic. Tastes a bit malty with some bland herbal taste mixed in.

M: Very thin, a bit overcarbonated.

D: Hard for me to drink - the herbal taste/smell is almost medicinal and I felt it was overcarbed too. Despite being very thin and low ABV I didn't find it particularly drinkable.

I'm a big Shiner basher, and I am a Texas resident and probably always will be. I never drink Shiner products and found a mixed 6 pack for 7 bucks. Figured I'd take a few nights off from my pricier selections and go with something different Texas brews. Lets do this.

Appearance-Brownish amber with a white 1 inch head. Little retention and little lacing remains.

Smell-Nutty and Fruity. Some sweet malts as well. Very pleasant aroma.

Taste-Sweet malts, very nutty and very fruity. Very similar to the aroma. An extremely nice Hop Bitterness balances it out. Very balanced and very impressed.

Mouthfeel-Smooth and crisp. Medium bodied with alot of carbonation. Clean finish.

Overall-First beer out of the mixed 6 and impressed. Very nice beer that is sessionable and highly drinkable.

A - Amber, copper, ruby in color. Head was light tan/yellow, about a finger. No lace.

S - Malty, fruity nose with some nice herbal hop notes.

T - Malty, fruity, tangy with an herbal, spicy hop bite/finish.

M - Crisp, clean finish, light in body, with a slightly effervescent-like carbonation profile.

D/O - Drinkability is pretty easy, and its a decent Altbier. It's worry a revisit while it's around, but I likely won't.

Poured a clear orange-amber into a pint glass with a finger of quick-receding off-white head. Subtle aroma with a touch of caramel and lemon.

Moderate carbonation and a fairly full mouthfeel. Mild lemony hops up front followed by caramel biscuit and honey and a pleasantly grassy bitterness on the finish.

Nicely balanced and very easy-drinking and refreshing. One of Shiner's better offerings!

My initial impressions of this are not too good. I suppose it could be worse. It has character, but I'm not sure I like the character.

It has a kind of dark malty taste. Not much hops in either the taste or nose. I suppose it's right for the style, but the style has never been one of my favorites. I will try to avoid.

Pours a light amber with 3 fingers of fluffy cream colored head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Cereal notes& cornyness, not much else

T: Cereal & caramel notes up front, a touch of cornyness, some herbal & metallic hops lurking in the background. Dryness & crackery notes as this warms, just a whisper of caramel & metallic notes. Finishes dry & crisp with leady & herbal hop bitterness

MF: Light/medium bodied, overcarbonated

This isn't a horrible beer, but my first batch homebrewed alt I made back in 94 was as good as or better than this. This is a light hearted attempt at the style at best

Appearance: Pours a clear, amber-hued body with a foaming, near white head.

Smell: Nutty, biscuity aroma with fleeting traces of spice and herbs and caramel.

Taste: Lightly nutty, lightly toasty malts with a hint of dry, stale biscuits in there as well. Lightly sweet with some slight caramel. Sip of still mineral water. Lightly hopped, with light touches of spice and grassiness to it. Crisp, drying, clean finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: A bit mild, as expected, but pretty decent. I drank it down. No, really, I did!

Poured from 12 oz bottle from Shiner Family Reunion 6-pack into my strictly functional and not pretentious Weihenstephaner stange.

A: Poured a nicely carbonated amberish-burnt orange color. Head was about 2 finger and stayed fairly stable down the glass with sporadic lacing.

S: Aromas were very subtle. Citrusy hops with faint malts and fruitiness (dark?)

T: Caramel malts outweigh the hops while maintaining a good balance; didn't get the metallic aftertaste other Shiner brews sometimes suffer from, instead I really enjoyed the fruity/citrusy aftertaste; toasted grains common to Shiner also present.

M: Smooth, medium-body mouthfeel. Very sessionable.

O: Pleasantly surprised at the quality of this brew; was only disappointed in the lack of aroma. It would make a great six pack for the summer or spring. Nothing challenging here, but a great session beer.

First ever beer from Shiner, I've always heard about it but never got the chance to give them a whirl. Interesting to see a pretty rare in the alt, but I definitely enjoy Otter Creek and Long Trail's versions. Pours a good looking light brown color, some great caramel notes on the tongue, nice solid mouthfeel, medium bodied. Nice and crisp and drinkable with a nice spiciness to it, really liked this one. Not too bad for only $11.99 for a mixed 12 pack.. psyched to try the rest!

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #49 (Feb 2011):

Bubbly, patchy lacing has a nearly epic quality to it, and with a stunning, clear amber color, this brew ends up being a looker. Hints of caramel, taffy and spicy hops in the aroma. Oily hop feel and flavor; the solid medium body heavily brushes the palate with a smoothness. Bready maltiness flexes a bit; faintness of caramel and biscuit. Balance from the hops is sufficient, but the flavor just adds a greater quality to this brew. Clean, drinkable and interesting at that, as our palates continue to tell us that we would be able to quaff this beer all night long.

Poured into a Brit pint glass. One finger creamy off-white head that settles into a 1/2 finger cap that retains throughout drinking. Color is a deep copper-gold, clear with carbonation bubbles sprinkled throughout. Looks really nice. Aroma is a refreshing light pine-grapefruit atop slightly sour grass. The taste leaves me somewhat perplexed. It's refreshing and drinkable but what are the flavors? Initial spicy earthy hops quickly fades to mild citrus hops, mild earth hops, mild bready malt, not much sweetness, and pretty dry. Finishes with a long drying earthy-nutskin- popsicle stick fade.
