Combining an iconic Texas brewery with the state fruit?!? I see no problems with this. Also, the label for the Ruby Redbird has been updated in recent years, so that's a plus.

Pours a fizzy golden amber color with no head. Lots of carbonation but no lace or foam to speak of. Oh well. The nose on this one is fun, sort of like a boozy Sunkist soda. Definitely some grapefruit in there, but it smells more like fruit water than beer. That said, I like the way it smells, even if it's rudimentary. The taste is similar, but the grapefruit notes emerge more here. Funky fruity aftertaste. The mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing.

This is a helluva beer on a hot summer day. I could see myself knocking back 2-3 of these in no time at all at a BBQ in 100 degree heat. Is it the best beer out there? No. Is it the worst? Certainly not. It's a Shiner beer, though, and it has a place. So there you go.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) bottle into a conical pint glass; no production information.
A: Pours an amber to light copper color with large bubbled carbonation similar to that present in soda, clearing rapidly without retention or lacing.
S: Aromas of burnt bread rind and pepper. Very little fruit.
T: Semisweet with a grapefruit flavor up front, although caramel malt is evident Light peppery, almost dusty, bitterness.
M: Light bodied with virtually no persistence of effervescence.
O: Fruit beers can obviously run a gamut, but this resembles nothing more than a poorly constructed and executed Fresca-like malternative. Would not even contemplate having this again.

Golden amber color almost identical to their Kosmos Reserve. Medium head disappears quickly. Does have subtle, fruity aroma. Well carbonated. The touch of Texas Ruby Red grapefruit is pleasant in the taste/smell matrix.

12 oz. bottle poured into mug

L: crystal clear gold with 1/4-inch head of fizzy white foam; no stick/lace; keeps razor-thin collar of white foam

S: hints of ginger and grapefruit juice, more ginger but just barely

T: watered-down grapefruit juice, hint of that ginger midswallow

F: watery up front but crisp in back; super light but would be perfect for drinking out of the bottle

O: better than water -- I'll give it that; if the ABV were 3.01% instead of 4.01, I might grab some of this for myself as a closer or starter ... probably starter, it's too weak-flavored to be a good closer; it's definitely a beer worth stocking for your friends who don't drink beer

No head, no lace, sweet like a beer-cooler, not my favorite Shiner beer.

The head disappeared almost immediately with no lacing whatsoever. The fake artificial grapefruit flavor just overpowers thru everything. I took 3 sips and I was done. There are those that know how to make great fruit beer and those that resort to using natural flavoring. This would be way better without all that fake crap added.

Poured into a nonic pint glass and the head fizzed the whole way down. It didn't want to last to save it's life. Carbonation could be seen rising at a fast pace. No lace.
The aroma had a crisp sharp sparkly ruby red grapefruit juice coming across some pale malts and a light grassiness.
The flavor took all of those previously mentioned aromas to blend sweetly and cross the aftertaste together with a bit of a metallic feature coming across.
The mouthfeel was light bodied with a decent sessionability about it. Went down pretty quickly and had a brisk semi-sharp carbonation about it. Somewhat of a soda sort of texture about it.
Overall, I think I liked this more for me as it's a nice one after lawnmowing but it does seem more like soda to me. Odd, but I'd return to it on a hot day.

Not really a fruit beer. Not really a shandy. It simply does not "work". The smell of Grapefruit is "OK", but the overall flavor is like a lager that has had Grapefruit "essence" added at the end. Not very well executed.
