Notes / Commercial Description:
Doubly good in triple digits, our unique summer seasonal is made with the fruit of the prickly pear, a cactus native to Shiner, Texas. With a tart, citrusy flavor and a crisp finish, it’s the best use of cactus yet.

Found in a Shiner Family Reunion 6-pack.
From the bottle to a Sam Adams laser-etched glass.

A - Nice golden color, with a thin and quickly dissipating head.

S - Sweet, fruity, surprisingly sour smelling. It smells slightly similar to sour candy.

T - I can taste the cactus, it's "green" tasting, kind of grassy and refreshing.

M - Medium bodied with a light aftertaste and some lingering cactus.

Summary - I really enjoyed this brew. It's better than Shiner's other fruit beer attempt "Ruby Redbird" and I would be much more likely to buy a 6-pack of this. It's different, has a unique flavor, and would go well with food or alone (which is how I drank it).

12 oz bottle pours a crystal clear copper color with a modest cap of off-white head. Fair retention and lace is excellent, sheeting even.

Nose is sweet and fruity, almost like red Kool-Aid. Not unpleasant, but not very beer-esque.

Taste shows more beer character with a nice grainy malt complimented by a berry fruitiness, maybe a little floral. Im assuming this uses the prickly pear fruit as opposed to the leaves given the flavors here. Its pretty good, I am a sucker for a good fruit beer and this one delivers a tasty treat that is not too sweet.

Any time a brewery tries something new, they get points for trying (in my opinion). This is a unique, easy drinking beer. Personally I like the sweet flavor.

Pours a clear light golden color with white head. Pear, light fruit on the nose; follows onto the palate. Light bodied. Finishes with light fruit flavors. Sweet.

This is my favorite beer. Everyone I have offered this beer to has loved it. I hate when it goes out of season, but when it comes back in the spring I love it so much more. The fruit taste is very unique and refreshing. It finishes strong and is light enough to have a few more. I am not a Shiner Bock fan but their seasonal beers like Prickly Pear, strawberry blond, and Ruby Redbird are special.

12oz brown bottle with no freshness date.

LOOK: Clear brassy hue, thick lacing

SMELL: Fruity, hard candy, floral, mild breadiness, sweet

TASTE: Slightly smooth, wet, moderate body, fruity, grass, juicy, earthy, herbal, mild spice, baked apples, cactus, dry finish

I can appreciate the effort for doing a cactus flavored brew, if you can get past to at best ... embrace the fruitiness then this brew will do just fine by you.

Tasty and sweet. Not sure what cactus tastes like but I get a bunch of melon, light honey, light citrus, and a touch of hops at the end. While a six pack might be a bit much, I am looking forward to the other one in the variety twelve pack.

24 (!) oz bottle.

Pours deep brown-amber with unusually coarse carbonation. Head is fairly short-lived.

Aroma: fruity and floral, with some earthy/herbal hop notes.

Flavor: Unusual fuity flavor with some tartness, presumably from the fruit of the prickly pear cactus. ... think citrus/strawberry. About equally tart and bitter.

O: refreshing, unique and flavorful. Well worth trying.
