An appealing brew with a generous cream head that lasts and laces beautifully. Deep mahogany with caramel reflections to suit its namesake, the beer is slightly transluscent betraying the fact that it is not filtered and possibly bottled conditioned.

I was hoping for more from the aromas in this beer. I only got a slight whiff of the caramel I expected, and a very misplaced dose of celery salt. The malt only faintly manifests itself through this duo of caramel and celery, and not much more manages to surface even with some warming. Not really impressive.

When I purchased this beer I didn't really over-estimate its potential. I had some expectations but went in with an open mind. The taste is where this beer falls apart. Chalky, astringent, and mostly flavourless with a very unpleasant aftertaste that sadly lingers much too long. Somewhat watery body and nothing to keep me coming back. Total dissappointment and a drain pour. :(

hiver 2007.

Ratebeer has it listed as an Amber Ale, here it's a Belgian strong dark. It does blur the lines... I'd be inclined to just call it a winter warmer.

A: Hazy copper-brown, light tan head, some retention, initial lace.

S: Brown sugar, dark fruit, caramel.

T: Dark fruit, phenolic spicyness, brown sugar, unfortunate cardboard flavour (oxidized), tropical fruit, caramel, bitterness is light, alcohol is warming.

M: Lightly carbonated (a little flat); moderate body has a hint of syrupy sweetness.

D: Perhaps this is getting a little stale (though I thought 7% would cellar a little better). The flat, thin, cardboard flavour & assertive alcohol really inhibit the drinkability. I was able to finish the 500 ml though.
