375ml bottle poured into a goblet

A- pours deep amber in color with a one-finger creamy khaki head that has great retention

S- roasted pumpkin and caramel up front, along with creme brûlée, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, maple syrup, pecans, oaky vanilla & bourbon

T- sweet and malty up front with notes of caramel, vanilla cream, brown sugar and maple. Mid-palate brings out some spice notes of cinnamon, nutmeg & allspice. The finish brings out plenty of bourbon barrel that adds a hint of vanilla as well as a vegetal gourd note. Lingers of cinnamon and barrel

M- medium body with moderate-low carbonation leads to a slightly foamy mouthfeel and a warming finish

O- nice barrel character compliments the base beer, good pumpkin flavor throughout

I'm a sucker for all things barrel aged so I couldn't help myself when I found this late this spring.

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep reddish hue topped with a finger of dense light tan head that fades slowly to a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Smells of pumpkins and pumpkin pie spice with notes of cinnamon and allspice along with some bourbon barrel goodness with some caramel and vanilla. This has a great nose.
T: Taste is roasted pumpkins with cinnamon, allspice, vanilla, and caramel with some hints of oak. Slight whipped cream flavor as well along with a slight sensation on the palate of cool whip. Swallow is more pumpkins, cinnamon, and allspice with some other spices. Nice bourbon barrel notes toward the back end as some oak, caramel and vanilla lingers.
M: This beer is fairly full in body with a slightly sticky mouthfeel. Carbonation is soft but adequate and the beer has a drying finish from the ABV.
O: Overall this one is right on the money. Like a pumpkin pie with some nice bourbon additions as well as some other flavors to dial up the complexity. Well crafted and well worth a try if you're into barrel aged beers.

12.7 Fl Oz bottle
Served in a Jackie O's snifter
2015

This beer pours a copperish brown color with some deep amber highlights. It is murky and topped with an inch of tan head that disappears quickly.

The smell is bourbon, vanilla, caramel, and mellow pumpkin spices.

The bourbon character shines as usual in a Jackie O's barrel aged offering. The pumpkin spices have faded after a year in my cellar.

Full mouthfeel. It is viscous and smooth.

This is a fine example of a bourbon barrel aged pumpkin beer. I think the extra year in my cellar enhanced the flavor experience.

Dark copper with a large beige foamy head--the body gets much darker and cloudier with a full pour, becoming a more brown mahogany.

Smell is bourbon, pickle juice, caramel, and light pumpkin spices of cinnamon and allspice. Peppery oak and even wine barrel sort of explodes. Just tons of oak, but weird.

This tastes really funky. Oak aged prune juice. Heavily oaked balsamic vinegar. Pumpkin and spices are really distant. There's some heat burn, but all in all it's a weird stingy tang. It's just too pruney, with a bitter, almost sour rose vinegar element.

2015 thanks to rudzud

Little creamy fluffy head fades at a fair pace, dark murky brown pond water color, decent lacing, long legs.

Nose loads of bourbon, tons of sweet candy bourbon and vanilla barrel, plenty of caramel, molasses toffee candy, little cookie dough, little fig or weird fruity vegetal maybe gourd, baking spices.

Taste brings sweet candy, toffee, caramel, molasses, little vegetal fruity gourd and fig fruit, mild pumpkin like, mild spicy hop, a touch of booze warmth and ester, baking spices and mild holiday spices but very light. Some bourbon, less then the nose, toasted vanilla oak, sweet candy bourbon, decent vanilla. Finish sticky sweet candy but drier, bit more bitterness from spicy hop and spices, little more bourbon candy.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, little booze warmth, decent carb.

Overall pretty good, good bourbon barrel, good mild spices and gourd pumpkin and fig fruit etc.

Shared with JLindros. 2015 vintage.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice lightly hazy copper hue with a thin head that fades to leave light wisps.

S - Aromas of a random sweet vegative thing going on. Light bourbon barrel, faint spice notes.

T - Taste is similar to the nose, creamy vanilla, light vegative pumpkin flesh notes. Nice barrel notes, sweet bourbon. Very light spice notes. Alcohol somewhat present.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, but bit thin, alcohol hidden nicely.

O - Overall this was a rather solid pumpkin beer. The spice notes were a bit aggressive on the nose, but, overall this was a solid beer.

Pumpkin beers are hit or miss with me, but this is a nice blend of vanilla, oak, and some nice traditional pumpkin spice flavors. Tons of caramely bourbon here. A bit too boozy on the nose, but luckily doesn't come through so aggressively with the taste.

Bottle into a New Belgium snifter. Color-wise, it's the same rusty brown/orange on the pour as the non BA version. A bit darker in the glass, however; more of a dark, hazy, cloudy ruby/mahogany. 1/2 a finger of cream-colored foam initially, and after about 2 minutes it was a spotty lacing. Raw pumpkins, light bourbon, vanilla, baking spices, cream, and caramel on the nose. Between the bourbon and the spices, this thing will open your sinuses up! Not a strong bourbon aroma, surprisingly. Really, not a strong aroma in general. Upon tasting, I immediate get a great balance between sweet bourbon and spicy pumpkins. It's like a clash of the titans, each striving to be the dominant flavor. Whipped cream, caramel, toffee, ginger, and nutmeg all have large roles in the flavor profile as well. Really unfolds nicely as it warms on the palate. Very easy to drink, which isn't always the case with relatively fresh Jackie O's stuff. Pretty dry on the finish, and leaves a pie crust and bourbon aftertaste. Fairly smooth, a little syrupy, not too thin. Overall, a good feel.

While the smell had me wondering for a minute, I can say that I like this better than the non-BA version, which was also very good. Adding bourbon to the mix takes this beer up a level, in my opinion. I really wish I'd had a few of these in the fridge for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

In the world of a thousand pumpkin ales, how is a brewer to stand out? Well, by raising the beer's strength to imperial status and bourbon barrel aging it is a good start.

Jackie O's Barking Pumpkin pours with the dark and tawny rust hues that's suggestive of British olde ale. Capped with a tarnish patina froth, its scent is rife with pumpkin pie, maple syrup, pecan and undeniable bourbon. Its taste slathers the palate with deeply caramelized malts, brown sugar and bourbon and chocolate.

And that bourbon trend embarks on the middle palate with the same brunt and force as it did leading in, but also reeling in aspects of chocolate, praline, caramel, vanilla and cinnamon and nutmeg medley that makes the sell of pumpkin pie strong. Graham cracker biscuity dryness hits the finish as does bourbon and rum not-so-subtle nuance.

Finishing toasty-sweet and full bodied, the lavish ale layers on the late palate with a plethora of residual sweetess that balances only with the brunt of bourbon booze and accessorized spice. Its strong aftertaste is deep of french toast, pumpkin pie and quintessential bourbon.

2015 batch.

A: Ruddy dark brown pour with a very fizzy light brown head. Head dissipates rapidly leaving no lacing and hardly any head retention.

S: Sharp bourbon with caramel and a backing of pumpkin. Cinnamon and allspice and just a hint of vanilla.

T: Interesting. Sweet caramel and vanilla up front with a bunch of pumpkin. Lots of associated spices follow like nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice. Maybe cloves? I swear the spices are ramped up versus the base beer, even though I would have assumed the barrel-aging would have mellowed them out a bit. A little more caramel and oak on the back end with lingering pumpkin and spices.

M: Heavy and sweet.

O: Not a huge barrel character on this one. I think it could have benefited from a little more. This is almost too similar to the base beer (which I had two days ago). I'm not sure if I could have picked them apart in a blind testing, it's that subtle. Or maybe I've been drinking too many barrel-aged beers recently.

- 2015 vintage
- 375mL bottle poured into stemless wine glass on 2-Jan-15

Note: my bottle lists ABV at 11%. Not sure if there's a difference in vintages.

Pours dark golden with a bit of orange hue and about half inch head. The all spice, nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger dominate both aroma and flavors, with some pumpkin, coriander, vanilla, and a bit of oak rounding it all out. There's a bit of heat that's unbalancing things, but not to the point where I couldn't enjoy it. I liked the spice profile and the ginger was a nice touch. I would've preferred a bit more bourbon barrel shining through, but overall a good pumpkin brew.

12.7 ounce bottle, 2015 vintage. Served in a Jackie O's snifter, the beer pours a burnt orange/brown color with about a half inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. Aroma is nice, the brew smells mostly like vanilla, bourbon, and caramel, along with some pumpkin spiciness. I think the taste follows the aroma, the bourbon, vanilla and caramel flavors are the strongest, but the pumpkin spices are definitely noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's somewhat slick with a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked this a lot more than the regular Barking Pumpkin, probably because of the bourbon barrel aging. I wouldn't mind picking up another bottle or 2 of this. $11.99 a bottle.

Poured into a snifter. Appears a hazy dark amber to brown with a wispy, bubbly tan head. The nose is all bourbon, oak, a touch of pumpkin and spices. The taste is again bourbon forward, with loads of caramel backing it up. The pumpkin and spices are just a supplementary note here.
