Jackie O's Pub & Brewery
Ohio, United States

Style: American Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
The base stout focuses on rich caramel and chocolate notes with a deep savory/smokey backbone. The entire batch found its way into bourbon barrels where it rested for over a year. An enticing combination of sweet and savory, with waves of dark chocolate and vanilla that wash over the palate.

A: Pours jet black with about a finger of head, the head dissipated rather quickly.

S: Chocolate Syrup, Bakers chocolate, Caramel, Maple Syrup, Bourbon

T: Bourbon, Chocolate, Caramel-Sweetness, followed by a little smoke and roasted malt. The bourbon lingers in the finish.

M: Silky smooth, medium-thick viscocity, so damn smooth and thick.

O: A borderline flawless stout. Similar in taste characteristics to Black Maple.. Like it's big roasty brother.

This stout is a viscous dark brown, very nearly black that allows no light in except at the very edges. The head is a small, bubbly medium brown one that peaks at about 1/4 finger with moderate retention and lacing.
Boozy cocoa is up front in the nose. Some is light but shows up in more of a dry, woody note. The bourbon adds some heat and a hint of vanilla sweetness. While it smells delicious, there's a touch more ethanol in the end.
Cocoa, vanilla and wood come up equally at the beginning of each sip, just a slight smokiness coming up with the wood. Bourbon looks to add some heat along with the not-quite-spicy sweetness, ending up adding nice depth and warmth rather than excessive heat. The wood comes back through again to finish it, lingering nicely.
The body is full, plenty of crispness coming in while the bourbon makes it smooth but doesn't thin it out. Sweetness counters the dryness, and ultimately it starts sweet and goes about medium, then ends semi-dry.

375 ml bottle, 2014 vintage. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch tan head that fizzled away quickly. There's a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is nice and sweet, the brew smells like burnt/charred malt, chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, dark fruit (cherry, plum), and some smoke. I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some coffee, caramel and woodiness noticeable. It's one of the sweeter tasting stouts I've had lately. The smoke is subtle, I was expecting it to be a little stronger. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's a bit coating and creamy with moderate carbonation. I thought this was a pretty good overall brew, Jackie O's has another winner with this one! $12.99 a bottle.

thanks to thrashd for this treat, enjoyed from a jackie o's mini snifter.

a - brew poured a watery black/brown with a small bubbly head that was gone fairly quickly and left spots of lace that slipped to the surface.

s - nose has some nice bourbon chocolatey decadence over a smoked stout. the barrel dominates but the smoke is still present giving it a nice twist from your standard barrel aged stouts...while simultaneously making smoke...something most don't love, as a palatable item.

t/m/o - easy drinker, smooth and the smoke works fairly nicely with the barrel aged stout. smoke is in the passenger seat and present, but not overwhelming. i rather enjoyed this brew. jackie o's has really been impressing me lately...i had sort of written them off a bit in the beginning as nothing but midwest hype...this and the last few brews have changed my opinion.

Heavy, heavy oak flavor but not very smokey. Immense bourbon on the nose. Very sweet overall. Stupid thin for being 11%. Very little head in the snifter pour.

Jackie o's has seriously perfected transferring the barrel to the beer. Whatever they're aging their beers in works so, so well in their favor. As much as I DO like this beer, I feel like it's a steriotypical beer for the brewery... that is - there's an OKAY base, with a tremendous barrel aging on it.

All that said... I would buy it again.

Big thanks to rudzud

Light darker fluffy smaller head fades quickly, pitch black, long legs

Nose big chocolate, fudgey cocoa, dark choc fudge and roasted like malts, hint of smoke, little marshmallow, little char barrel oak, earthy root notes, burnt caramel, little baking spices and cookie dough, weird wafer and paper.

Taste big dark malt, char, dark choc cocoa, little fudgey, caramel, baking spices and cookie dough, little creamy, some vanilla and mild bourbon, some smoke thing, smoked wood, char, hint of booze, super dark fudge.

Mouth is thicker fudgey bit maybe a touch thin, decent carb, little booze.

Overall pretty good but not great.

Got a couple of 12 oz bottles for a steal in one of the 10.99 6 packs from my local Kroger's Grocery store! I usually keep a look out for Jackie O's just because I love their stouts. And this one is a killer! Firstly this is reported here in another instance as 9.5% ABV when it's a solid 11% ABV. Says right on the label Max Beer ABV in Ohio is 11%. Jackie O's bottles always have a bubbled neck and are quite hefty I love using them for my home brew and their labels easily come off as they're plastic.

Poured it into a 12 oz glass very dark almost black slightly oil colored. Just a finger of caramel colored head that quickly settled to an edge leaving nice lacing.

Smelled terrifically of cocoa, warm caramel and brown sugar and with a slight smokey bourbon smell neither the bourbon or the smoke was over powering like other bourbon or smoked stouts I've tried.

Tasted nearly as it smelled, but had a molasses, slight honey taste or a bit of brown sugar and strong cocoa, the smoke was there but not destructive to the other flavors. Left lingering tastes of vanilla and dark chocolate with a woody bourbon taste which is very mild I must say. Hop character and alcohol is very well hidden! As it breathed and warmed the bourbon was more noticable but still tasted of vanilla and cocoa. 1/2 way through the glass I was feeling warm and fuzzy, drink slowly.

Mouth feel was syrupy and sticky malty. Carbonation is moderate to light.

If you're a fan of sweet stouts or imperial stouts in general you'll love this one I'm gonna age the other bottle for a long while might head back and get another 6 bottles tomorrow!

This beer is epic. By next year, people will be stalking distributors and bottle shops much as we do for KBS.

Pours thick like oil with a thin cream head. Licorice, coffee, prunes smell. Tastes are very complex, smoked coffee, licorice, chocolate and fruit. Mildly syrup mouthfeel. Wonderful beer with loads of flavors,

Aroma: strong vanilla character up front. Moderate oak tones that are well knit with the vanilla and barrel-aged character of the beer. Low roasted notes and clean fermentation character.

Appearance: Jet black pour with a low tan head. Head retention is good. Appears still in the glass. Head is sudsy and wispy.

Flavor: Strong vanilla and sweet oak character up front. Low background smoke character that is understated. Black licorice flavors assert as the beer warms. Balance is to the woody and malty character. Finish is clean and dry.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Slightly oily with no alcohol heat.

Overall impression: A velvet hammer. An assertive barrel aged stout that is fantastic now and would only improve with age. Well done!

Pitch black, small tan head and great spotty lacing. Vanilla, oak, chocolate, Bourbon and Smoke dominate the aroma. Notes of dark chocolate, coffee, smoke, burnt crust, vanilla and toffee. Thinner than expected, call it medium, dry and smooth. This brewery has maybe one of the most underrated Barrel programs. Lovely stout.
