2016 vintage. This one has me very confused since all of the other reviews are so positive. My wife and I had a long argument about whether the smell or the taste was worse but as it warmed I came into agreement with her that it was definitely the nose that was the worst of it. Does this have sorrel in it? It's in the name but otherwise wasn't mentioned on the description of the beer or in other reviews. I don't actually know what sorrel tastes like well enough to know if that was the problem or if it was something else. It didn't seem to be infected (at least not with any of the usual culprits) but something here is completely overpowering all the caramel and other notes everyone else mentions in their reviews. I wish I was better at descriptions but I've really never had anything that tasted like this before and I've got no idea what to call this thing. The beer did make my wife do some hilarious shivers in disgust, so that was a positive at least.

Served on tap at the taproom. The appearance is a deep brown with limited head and lacing. The nose is bourbon forward, sweet with notes of caramel, vanilla and toffee. The taste is similar to the nose with the addition of a hint of heat from the barrels. I think a touch of aging will do this wonders. Overall, it's another excellent BBA offering from Jackie O's

Pours deep dark brown with mahogany highlights and 2 fingers of tan foam. Aroma is led by the spicy bourbon with underlying hints of chocolate, wood, toffee, and molasses.

Body is big, thick, and oily. A bit heavy for a brown ale obviously, but it works with the bourbon. I was expecting this to basically be a stout or porter that they called a brown ale, but it does maintain the nutty milk chocolate notes of brown. I was a little skeptical, but I should have know better. Just about every time Jackie O's fills a barrel, magic comes out.

2016 vintage
375nl bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours deep brown in color with a one-finger foamy white head that reduces to a ring around the edge

S- aroma is very similar to an English barleywine; lots of caramel and toffee, earthy leather, tobacco, chocolate, burnt brown sugar. Plenty of bourbon barrel aromas that adds undertones of woody oak, vanilla & caramel

T- sweet caramel and toffee up front, along with brown bread, tobacco, brown sugar, molasses & a hint of chocolate. Oaky bourbon barrel kicks in on the finish, providing some vanilla notes as well. Lingers of caramel and oak

M- medium body and carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into a slightly warming finish

O- an outstanding brown ale that takes one the flavors of the bourbon barrel, and seems to only enhance the caramel notes throughout

375 ml bottle, 2016 vintage. Served in a Jackie O's snifter, the beer pours dark brown with some reddish tints. There was about a half inch light tan head, but it fizzled away pretty quickly. Not much lacing, either. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like bourbon, vanilla, toffee, and caramel. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also the addition of some nutty, wood, and chocolate flavors. Good amount of booziness, not too little, not too much. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and has a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought this was a pretty good brew, if you like brown ales and/or barrel aged brews, then pick up a bottle of this one! $11.99 a bottle.

The good news - turn out that brown ale is a real nice medium to bourbon barrel age. The bad news is that I am drinking an under-carbonated bottle - almost flat.

Lets talk about the good - the color is nice and dark and would be quite appetizing with a some head. I got a small bit, but it dissipated very quickly. Nose is strong and all bourbon. Taste pretty much follows - there are hints of malty brown ale, but this is pretty much a showcase of bourbon - which isn't a bad thing. Nice little subtle hint of vanilla extract at the end. Pretty boozy, but in this case it works. Mouth feel - what can I say - beer should be carbonated.

The bad. I had the exact same problem with a bottle of Bourbon Barrel Black Maple from the same time frame. Is Jackie just going for minimal carbonation on their bourbon aged products or was there a bottle malfunction?? My buddy had a similar problem with a BB Black Maple from the same run. Like the BB Black Maple, this beer is so tasty that I will finish and even enjoy it, even though it is almost flat. I don't mind dropping $$ for great beer and I will excuse an occasional production issue -- but this is the second in a fairly small sample. I really like this flavor, but need a few bubbles. If they solve the CO2 shortage in Eastern Ohio, they are on to some really incredible dark beers. Until then, I have to call 'em like I drink 'em.

One of the best BA browns I have had. Strong bourbon flavor. Thick and strong aroma of malt and bourbon. Well put together like all JOs are. Hope to have this as a regular brew from them

Poured into a Duvel tulip. No freshness date.

A-Pours a dark brown color with a 1/4 inch tan head that retains a bit before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and some random splotches of surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves a thick solid ring behind.

S- Deep, rich oaky bourbon aroma with accompanying notes of dark chocolate, vanilla and pecans. A bit more booze-forward in the nose than other Jackie O's BBA beers I've had.

T- Instantly gratifying vanillin character from the barrel that's so smooth with no trace of the booze found in the nose. Finishes with a creamy milk chocolate decadence. Damn. Sweet but not too sweet and so dangerously drinkable. Notes of caramel, molasses and more pecans. Chocolaty aftertaste.

M- Slick and creamy with medium-low carbonation and a fullish body.

O- The flavor is what really drives this one home. The smell is good and the body is about what you'd expect from a brown ale base but it all makes sense once that taste sinks into your palate. Not the best I've had from Jackie O's but certainly met my expectations.
