Notes:
Around the brewery we listen to a lot of reggae, drink a fair share of coffee. And are devoted to our barrel aging program. In 2015, we had a one off imperial stout aging in barrels for close to a year. These barrels had a rich chocolate/vanilla character, but were asking for a boost. Stauf’s coffee roasters in Columbus, OH nailed the perfect roast on some authentic Jamacian Blue Mountain coffee to compement this barrel-aged stout. The illustration on this label is of Charlie Ace’s Swing-a-ling mobile record shack which was notorious for broadcasting “Champion Sound!” An additional conditioning on toasted coconut adds even more island vibes to this decadent coffee stout.

12.7oz bottle. '2021' is posted on the label as the year of brewing and bottling.
Dark cola colored body. Brief, fizzy dark tan head. Active surface show. No lacing.
Aroma of dark roasted malts, bourbon barrel and oak, coffee, and coconut. Smells sweet.
Taste is a liquid blend of coffee and coconut over dark roasted malts. Some dark chocolate brownie bites. Big influence from the bourbon barrel, with oak and dark fruit. Sweet bourbon in the aftertaste, and the coconut.
More than medium mouth feel. Higher ABV% is well hidden. Good supportive carbonation.
Complex brew, with many competing components. Bourbon barrel and coconut sweeten the pot.

There’s a lot of coffee and a good deal of coconut. I’m not sure the coconut actually makes it better or if the flavors are fighting a bit. Barrel aging too, so there’s a lot going on. It’s quite good.

Jet black with light brown speckling and thin cap. Nose is led by bourbon and coffee, with supporting dark chocolate, coconut, and toasty oak, but not super potent. Taste opens up a bit: starring coconut, coffee, and chocolate soaked in bourbon, well balanced with malt tones. Feel is warm and smooth, classic jackie o's full body without being heavy or hot. Coconut was a welcome addition

Very little head production or retention, but it's an attractive beer somehow. No floaties or particulate, despite the coconut and coffee additions.
Nice amount of bourbon on the nose, along with hints of vanilla, coconut, and coffee. Not a super strong nose, but very, very pleasant and inviting.
As modest as the nose may be, there's no holding back on the palate. Rich, sweet, and decadent, almost like a liquid brownie up front. Notes of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, brown sugar; coffee and coconut are certainly milder but nicely complementary flavors, while the coffee manages to linger on the back end with a nice bitterness.
Full bodied; almost stickier than chewy. Noticeable alcohol heat, but it's not harsh.

Pours dark and clear, thick and syrupy, hard to get any head. Has a very nice aroma - boozy coconut, chocolate syrup, light coffee, bourbon barrel all mix together perfectly. Flavor is chocolate, vanilla, light coconut, coffee on the finish, bourbon barrel rounds it all out nicely. Flat carbonation, and I would expect a bit more texture to this - maybe the lack of carbonation makes it feel thin, yet syrupy. Overall, I wish there was more coconut. Pretty tasty beer, a bit expensive…

Poured from fridge temp into a Jackie O's tulip. Pours jet black, of course. Little head. Nose is amazing. Coffee, coconut, vanilla, bourbon, chocolate, marshmallow, a hint of blueberry, toffee, and other dark fruits. The taste is fantastic. Slight bitterness from the coffee on the aftertaste. Sweet upfront, with beautiful notes of chocolate fudge, vanilla, coconut, toffee, burnt wood, figs, blackberries and raisins. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Overall a fantastic take on a fantastic beer.

12.7 oz bottle, vintage 2021, poured into a snifter at 49 degrees F:
L - black and oily with a hazelnut head that quickly disappeared
S - bourbon, coffee, coconut
T - bourbon and coffee with a light coconut taste on the late finish (just the way I like it)
F - thick mouthfeel with minimal carbonation
O - great beer, coconut is understated and bourbon flavor is excellent!

375ml bottle poured into a tulip
A- pours jet black in color with a one-finger foamy khaki head that reduces to a ring around the glass
S- earthy and herbal coffee notes mix with a bold aroma of dark chocolate up front, followed by undertones of toasted coconut, vanilla and toffee, candy bar vibes. Oaky bourbon closes out the nose
T- bold notes of toasted coconut up front are followed by creamy dark chocolate up front. Mid-palate brings out some herbal and peppery coffee that adds some espresso notes, followed by caramel, toffee and brown sugar. The finish brings out oaky barrel juice that seems to emphasize the coconut, as it lingers long after
M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into a slightly warming and thin finish
O- the coconut really comes through and compliments the base beer very well

2021 12.7 ounce bottle poured into a DFH tulip. Very little head which faded immediately over an inky brown body. Smell is of boozy coconut over a molasses and coffee malt base. Taste follows the smell but richer and more complex. Mouthfeel is the typical Jackie O's big stout chewy feel. This is what happens when you tell the A Team to make you a barrel aged coconut stout.

Appearance: Pours espresso brown with a tan head that fades to a ringlet with a floating island; leggy with a few dots stranded
Smell: Strong aromatics of chocolate, coffee, coconut and vanilla; the Bourbon supports it all, underneath
Taste: Chocolate, vanilla and coconut forward with the coffee emerging; it takes a while for the Bourbon to hit the palate, but the barrel drives home the finish
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation
Overall: While full-bodied it lacks a thickness I would prefer; otherwise this is top notch

12.7 ounce bottle, 2021 vintage. Served in a Jackie O's snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head that didn't stay around for too long. Small amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells like coconut, coffee, bourbon, vanilla, chocolate and roasted malt. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also the addition of some oak, caramel, brown sugar and nutty flavors too. Good amount of barrel character noticeable without it being overpowering. Mouthfeel/body is full, it's slick and rich with a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked the base Champion Ground a lot, and I think this version is just as good if not better! Definitely worth grabbing a bottle or 2 if you're able to. I know I want to pick up some more! $15.99 a bottle.

Big old thanks to fiver29 for knocking this long-time want off my list. 375ML bottle for me.
The pour is 2:00 AM black with only a flippant stray bubble or two. Tiny ones. The nose is hefty coconut that masks whatever lies beneath.
Coconut Champion Ground – Barrel Aged is a 2021 rarity – it is subtle. Everything is gentle & integrated; coconut, roast, bourbon, sweetness akin to brown sugar. A less kind man would put ‘muted’ in place of ‘subtle’. At least it’s easy going down.
Compared to the borderline perfect BA Champion Ground this is a huge letdown & as dull as the original is bright & aggressive. Decent enough.

Medium carbonated, dark body, reduced foam.
Woody smell, the bourbon of course, mapple.
The coffee is behind somehow, some liquorice, a bitter feel, candy, bourbon, cognac.
I was expecting something else, but quite good.

Burnt brown-red edges but black in the center with a creamy thin tan ring.
Smell is fresh and fleshy coconut, chocolate covered nuts, roasted almonds and amaretto.
Taste still features that hot bourbon, while the coconut is accentuating the barrel and adding complexity, like nutty amaretto. The coffee has an almond paste quality with a dusting of cocoa, and is quite drying, which amplifies the heat. The yeast may have been agitated, contributing a red apple-like flavor in the coconutty finish.
Compared to the base, this has a surprisingly big froth, but still some heat glides through the medium body. Finish is very dry, and dries out even more so after the swallow.
