2018 Vintage
Pours a clear pale golden straw body topped with a towering, rocky head of tight, white soapy foam; great retention eventually yields a moderate cap, slight collar, and minimal-no lacing.
Aromas of woody lemon balm, citrus peel, orange zest dominate upfront in a leveled, almost toned-down fashion; straw and dehydrated bread crusts show on the back end through the underlying funk and reveal the beer's original kölsch leanings.
Taste opens with lemongrass and citrus peel, with bits of oak-tinged funk appearing softly on the mid-palate; touches of rounded yeasty tones marked with orchard fruit esters appear more prominently on the finish.
Mouthfeel features a light body with a moderate-high carbonation; short-lived acidity peaks quickly along the way and allows a brightness to shine through into a finish both a step short of bone-dry, and slightly watery.
Intriguing, understated hybrid that marries the crisp bread and fruit tones of a kölsch with subtle farmhouse funk with relative ease; had these elements shown a touch more synchronicity, though, this would have been easily elevated from 'good' to 'great territory.

This is one of the more technically unique beers I have had in a while, very fun. Bubbly golden body with a solid white foam head. Smell and taste feature the kolsch grains, honey, and a more lager-like aftertaste, but the yeast and hops are more saison oriented, resulting in a playful hybrid that is slightly tart with citrus and orchard fruit, but fully embraces the kolsch underlying elements and finish. Taste allows you to really dig into the nuances more than the smell. As with all hybrids that nail the flavoring, it is hard to rate the feel too highly because it is a certain departure from the style: drier, slightly tart, airy, but still plenty yeasty and grainy.
