A-dark black body with tan head that quickly disapates

S-lots of chili, which apparently wasn't intended

T-little bit of cinnamon aand maybe vanilla? Chili isn't so prevalqnt as the nose

M- medium boey and smooth

O-very good, even though its not what it was

pulled this gem out of the cellar

dark as night, thick and inky black with a nice two finger head of cocoa brown on top that really capped it off just about perfectly. Dripping tan lace down the sides it really just looked the part quite nicely i have to admit.

Aroma is of deep roasted malts, lots of cocoa, a touch of a light peat, or smoked flavor and a really well balanced and nicely put together coffee bitterness. This carried over well into the flavor which was rich, creamy and smooth with hints of light chocolate that welcomed the palate first and were soon followed by a nice blend of coffee, roasted malts, light hop notes that dried the palate out quite nicely and a rich, even, semi dry and sweet finish.

I had this on-tap at Jackie O's during the release this weekend. Served in a sample glass.

Appearance: Pours a very dark mahogany color with no real head to speak of.

Smell: Sweet roast, mild vanilla, dark fruit, cinnamon, and some warm bourbon.

Taste: Lots of sweet malt with some strong notes from the barrel. Dark fruit and some bourbon, but the overall flavor seems to be a bit watered down.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with mild carbonation and a finish that is a bit dry.

Overall: I would have liked the flavor to be a bit fuller, but the taste that was there is good. I would consider trying it again.

4 oz. sampler at JO's 6th Anniversary. I made damn good review notes, but then I lost them. Bear with me on this.

3.5 A: Black color. Came without a head.

3.5 S: The cinnamon has persisted in this one. I can't say the same about the coffee. As for the stouts, they are quite tame now. Very soft roastiness with a touch of peat. Even less chocolate.

3.0 T: This isn't sour, nor is it really tart, but there's something sourish about this brew. It's like a tart butterscotch for lack of a better descriptor. That said, this brew isn't bad, but it isn't good either and it certainly doesn't taste much like what it's allegedly made of. Cinnamon and roast can be found in the taste. The bourbon, on the other hand, barely shows up or perhaps it is the bourbon that is showing up as the funky goofiness above.

3.0 M: A little on the lighter side. Good moderate carbonation. Lacking the creaminess that I want.

3.0 D: This is probably the worst of a series that isn't all that impressive overall anyway. Oh well, like all JO's brews, I'm happy to have tried it.

Poured into a small tasting snifter at the Pub. Pours a dark black with hues of brown. Thin tan head that vanishes quickly.

The aroma on this beer was outstanding. I picked up Cinnamon as the dominant smell. I didnt pick up much coffee as that seemed to be overpowered by some vanilla and bourbon. Also some hints of chocolate.

Tastes of roasty coffee. I wrote down that it tastes like cinnamon flavored coffee with a shot of bourbon in it. I also pick up an oaky chocolate flavor. Strange that I smelled vanilla and not coffee, but I taste coffee and not much vanilla.

A lot of carbonation in this beer and a medium mouthfeel. Would have liked a creamy less tingly mouthfeel.

For a bourbon barrel aged blend, this went down pretty easy. Overall, a good beer that I would definitely drink again.

Pours a dark brown, with amber edges when backlit. looks a little light. Very little carbonation. No head to speak of. Absolutely fantastic smell. bourbon mixed with sweet dark fruits: plum and cherry. chocolate and vanilla, with spicey cinnamon.

wow. unlike any beer ive ever had. a sour imperial stout? Somewhat, and it's quite good, though it takes a little getting used to. Not a lot going on up front. the lack of carbonation really kills the sweeter fruit flavors, and results in a rather dull plum. some chocolate and vanilla through the middle. In the finish, the tartness really asserts itself. it's like the sweet sourness of underripe cherries, accompanied by a bourbon character and an alcoholic burn. a slight cinammon spiciness in the finish and aftertaste that isn't as strong as the aroma would have you believe.

The mouthfeel is less than exciting. Fairly thick, though not as thick as it could be, and hardly any carbonation to speak of. For a big beer and the complaints i have with it, its drinkability is actually pretty good.

edit: after drinking this beer for awhile I've changed its drinkability score from a 4 to a 4.5. I still have the complaints in the other areas I've mentioned, but for whatever reason they don't seem to matter when it comes to drinkability. I'm flying through this thing!

as a side note, the abv says unknown, but the effects are of 10+%. I would guess around 11%.

22oz bottle brought to you by ipa257. Huge thanks for sharing man. Bottle # 145/156, bottled 12/2/09.

A: Pours almost black with a thin light brown head that receded into a thin collar that left spots of soapy lacing down the glass.
S: Smells strongly of coffee grounds. I can detect some of the cinnamon that this is brewed with, and maybe a hint of nuts, but these flavors are not huge.
T: Follows the nose with a big black coffee ground flavor. Coffee hits first, then the cinnamon, with hints roasted coconuts and nuts in the finish. Aftertaste is full of toffee.
M: Body is on the fuller side of medium with tingle carbonation that is low enough to not be frothy. Slight alcohol in the finish.
D: If you love coffee or cinnamon you'll love this. Not a bad beer, but not the best coffee stout out there either. Still, thanks again for opening this one Jeff.

Bottle consumed on 12/19/2009 and poured into a snifter. The beer appears black with a large and thick light brown head. Good retention.

The aroma is of cinnamon, dark chocolate, vanilla, and coffee. The cinnamon is well balanced and well integrated into the beer. Chocolate cinnamon cream. A light bourbon character is evident.

The cinnamon is a little stronger
in the flavor, and it contributes a light spiciness to the beer. Notes of vanilla, chocolate, coffee, and light bourbon are noticeable. There's a light astringent quality on the palate and a dash of sweetness. The mouthfeel is smooth, sticky, and creamy with moderate carbonation. I really enjoyed this.

On tap at Jackie O's Anniversary Party. Poured into small snifter. Poured a bit too cold.

A- Deep brown to black. Little head and no lacing as a result of the small snifter.

S- Outstanding! Dominated by cinnamon, complemented with vanilla, coffee and microwaved marshmallows. Tough to pick up much bourbon. So many layers.

T- Coffee, cinnamon, alcohol, a little bourbon. Sweetness goes great with cinnamon bite. I expected more bourbon, but with everything going on, I'm glad the bourbon doesn't overpower anything else.

M- Could be a little more viscous or maybe less carbonated. Even when completely warm, a little lacking. Need to give mouthfeel another shot from the bottle.

D- Drinkable, not exactly a sipper, but too much alcohol to have very much. A one bomber wonder.

Fantastic beer. Very creative and an extremely complex, layered aroma. I need this again.

Consumed January 2011.

A: Dark brown/black body. No signs of a head or lacing.

S: Coffee! Dark roasted coffee grounds. Some licorice, chocolate, and generic roasted malts.

T: Fairly one dimensional. Just a shit ton of roasted coffee grounds with only a hint of licorice and chocolate.

M: Medium-full bodied, some boozy astringency.

D: The one dimensional flavor profile gets in the way of things here. The coffee was just way to assertive for my liking.

Pours dark mahogany that looks close to black in the glass but definitely has light showing through the edges. There is a very small beige head that recedes to a thin collar.

The aroma is really unique and extremely nice with lots of cinnamon, vanilla and chocolate. Lots of lightly roasted malts in the background with espresso beans. The barrel is present with some bourbon but not a ton, very subtle.

The taste is a lighter, thinner version of the aroma. There is a quick hit of spicy cinnamon up front with some chocolate and coffee following close behind. The finish stings with bourbon and cinnamon spices. Bigger booze kick than I expected from the aroma.

The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied for the style and a tad watery. This is probably the biggest downside to this one as it needs to be a bit fuller bodied.

The aroma got me pretty excited about this one but the feel was a bit too thin to make this one a great stout. Nonetheless, I like what the cinnamon adds to the stout and the aroma is really excellent.

A special brew pulled from Brad's cellar

Pours a dark dark brown. A nice orange reddish tint. Some nice tan head.
Smells chili heavy, some nice cinnamon on the nose on the back.
Tastes sharp and roasty. There is a lot of cinnamon on the tongue. Funkiness is a bit odd. Good solid mouthfeel. Overall enjoyable.

Pours pitch black and completely opaque with a half finger light beige head that quickly fades into a lasting ring. Minimal spots of lacing.

Nice robust, roasted dark malt aroma with hints of bittersweet dark chocolate, dry coffee/espresso bean and oatmeal but not acrid/burnt smelling at all. Slight lactic creaminess along with a subtle bourbon barrel presence. Sweet bourbon in the nose but not much vanilla or oak. Also, the spice character is very faint and I'm not picking up much cinnamon at all.

Medium bodied but a little thinner than expected with a very odd combination of flavors. Much spicier than the aroma suggests with lots zesty pepper and cinnamon up front. The barrel presence is also stronger than expected with some sweet boozy bourbon and dry, toasted oak/wood flavor. I'm still not picking up any of the smoother vanilla/marshmallow notes. Underneath there is a dry roasted malt presence with a very strong, dry acrid coffee flavor. The coffee has faded a bit, resulting in the beer becoming overly dry and even slightly burnt tasting. The dry bitterness lingers into a long finish. As it warms, the smoother chocolate and oatmeal notes start to show balancing things out a bit.

Overall this beer was pretty weird but still enjoyable. Bourbon, coffee and cinnamon sounds like an unlikely match and it doesn't really work all that well for my taste. I admire the experimentation but this wasn't my cup of tea.
