enjoyed this at a barrel aged tasting on 2011-08-06 alongside regular dark apparition and brandy barrel aged.

2011 #18 of 240

look is identical to all the others...like a black hole with no head at all. the smell is really nice. not top shelf bourbon, but a nice smelling brew. flavor, however is spot on. vanilla, creamy, wonderful. mouth was the top of the 3, very creamy. overall really nice and my favorite of the three by a long shot.

Booze, Raisins, Vanilla, Wood

Such a lush brew, smells and smacks of bourbon soaked raisins. Pours a really great looking lace for a bigger barrel aged brew, very inviting appearance. Very fresh bourbon barrel character, big on vanilla. Not too sweet as the roasted character, wood and alcohol keeps everything in check. Nothing short of amazing.

Poured into a Dogfish traditional oversized snifter. No freshness date.

A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a 1/4 inch light brown head that retains decently before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a half sheet of sheer surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves a solid ring behind.

S- Lots of bourbon with a nice vanilla and brown sugar complexity spliced in. Pretty boozy but there's enough there to make it quite the interesting aroma.

T- Very smooth in the onset with notes of milk chocolate, vanilla, brown sugar and even maple. Very smooth for the ABV and the bourbon kicks in right near the back end providing just enough booze presence.

M- Silky smooth with medium-low carbonation and a full body.

O- I just had a pour of BCBS on draft earlier tonight and this is pretty much right on par with a bit more sweetness. My first Jackie O's beer and I sure am impressed.

Appearance: Pours fudge brown with a rather modest head that quickly fades to a ringlet; spots of lacing linger around

Smell: Chocolate fudge, caramel, vanilla, marshmallow, oak and Bourbon

Taste: Chocolate fudge, caramel and Bourbon forward, with developing marshmallow tones; in the middle, the oak and vanilla tones develop, with the finish being quite a mellow combination of all the elements

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with low to moderate carbonation; warmth in the gullet

Overall: One of Jackie O's better efforts, I would call this a marriage between a Bourbon barrel-aged IS and a barleywine

Thanks, howopeeps, for the opportunity

Pours a tad thin for a barrel aged stout. Holds a light khaki ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass throughout. The bourbon barrel is pretty pronounced in this beer with hints of caramel chocolate and booze. Taste follows the smell but is generally balanced and lacks the bitter RIS bite of the non barrel aged version. Very smooth with subtle sweetness. Feel is light. Overall this is a rather good beer that has great nose and pretty good taste but lacks the substantially of the serious body that a barrel aged stout should have.

Absolutely love this beer. Pours like black ink with a think mocha head that disipates very fast. Great big bourbon, chocolate, coffee smell. The taste is amazing with again- lots of bourbon, wood, chocolate, coffee and vanilla sweetness. There is some heat there in the finish, but hey- if you bought it, you read the label. Another exceptional offering from this brewery.

I have to say im a bit disappointed with this one, its almost too bourbon'y. I think that's because I find the base beer a bit watery.

I've been meaning to try JO's for a while and this did not disappoint. Drank straight out of the bottle sitting around a fire at a friend's going away party. Nice and thick, stout with brown sugar and barrel up front. Look forward to trying more from them.

Big thanks to Exiled for sharing this bottle.

The beer looks exactly like an imperial stout should, completely black with a dark tan head. The aroma is wonderful. I get a lot of roasted malt and chocolate, as well as a lot of notes from the barrel aging: bourbon, maple and vanilla.

The flavor is more of the same. You can tell the base beer is excellent and the chocolate and coffee notes come through nicely. I also get the same barrel aging notes as in the aroma: whiskey, maple and vanilla. The bourbon is present but is not overpowering. All of the flavors work very well together and make this an outstanding beer.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

On tap at CBC 2016. Black with a tan head. Bourbon, coffee, vanilla, licorice. Great mouthfeel and balance between flavours. A damn fine beer, one of the highlights of the show, for me.
