Ruby to deep brown in color with head around the edges and good lacing.

Nose is boozy, brown sugar, and oddly acidic.

Taste is sweet, oak, and pepper.

Mouthful is medium, carbonation is average, finish is warm.

Looking at the other reviews, this seems to be either infected or just bad. I will give the benefit of the doubt and say infected.

375mL bottle, 2016 edition poured into a snifter
A: Pitch black but almost no head
S: Bourbon, cocoa, chocolate, molasses
T: Chocolate, cocoa, bourbon, vanilla, brown sugar
M: Full-bodied, very smooth, a bit sweet but not hot
O: A very tasty RIS. Tasty now but I need to find another to age a while

Surprisingly fizzy for a JO brew, the head displays a dark tan, with a dark brown body underneath.

I smell brown sugar, oak, chocolate wafer, and burnt caramel.

Taste is rich caramel and brown sugar, oak, vanilla, and that signature boozy Jackie O's barrel heat, with a chocolate background.

Medium body, a little fizz, and surprisingly more tasty over the regular version. I even like this a touch better than their legendary BB Oro.

Pours a tad thin for a barrel aged stout. Holds a light khaki ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass throughout. The bourbon barrel is pretty pronounced in this beer with hints of caramel chocolate and booze. Taste follows the smell but is generally balanced and lacks the bitter RIS bite of the non barrel aged version. Very smooth with subtle sweetness. Feel is light. Overall this is a rather good beer that has great nose and pretty good taste but lacks the substantially of the serious body that a barrel aged stout should have.

I've been holding onto this one for a while now - probably 6 months. Maybe because I liked the non BA version a lot, or maybe just because it took a little trouble to get. Either way, its spent far too long in the downstairs fridge against my taste buds will...

A - 375ml poured into a snifter. Pours heavy and frothy - I like it. Head is fairly subdued not towering but what is there is rich and thick. Lacing looks thin however.

S - holy phuck. Jackie os brewery is a master as transferring the barrel to the nose. Every BA beer from them I've had essentially smells like a kentucky distillery. Let's hope the rest of this beer keeps up...

T - vanilla beans. Bourbon. Chocolate... was what came through right off the bat. I can't even describe how much balance this beer has between a cloying vanilla sweetness and a bitter chocolate tinge all the while being bitch slapped by bourbon. The flavor of this beer is palatable "extreme". It has so much going on but it's right down the median for everything I pick up.

M - typical jackie os it's a little thin. Hate to dock it because it's delicious but but does drink very thin for a bourbon barrel stout.

Overall - I'll buy again every chance I get. Arguably underrated but jackie os are pretty attainable so that is to be expected.

Pours an opaque dark brown color almost black, very viscous like oil, with khaki colored head. Bourbon, lots of boozy bourbon on the nose, some chocolate, sugar sweetness, and coffee on the nose; follows onto the palate. Full bodied. Finishes very boozy. Lots of bourbon on this, almost overwhelms the beer.

On the nose, big dark dried fruits, lots of chocolate and coffee, big big bourbon and vanilla sweetness, wow, what an improvement over regular dark app! Taste is more of chocolate and bourbon with slight vanilla. Overall a huge step forward over a pretty average base beer, but as some have displayed it as such below, this beer is NOT the gold standard for bourbon barrel age stouts, is not close as it falls quite short as compared to its contemporaries.

On tap at CBC 2016. Black with a tan head. Bourbon, coffee, vanilla, licorice. Great mouthfeel and balance between flavours. A damn fine beer, one of the highlights of the show, for me.

The standard for all other BA Stouts to live up to. Brown sugar mixing with the stout and adding a perfect mix of barrel. In all that i have tried, it seems waiting a year makes this amazing

Pour is an oily black, khaki big bubbled head that settled to a ring with nice spotty lacing.

Smell is initially sweet bourbon, wood, oak, vanilla ans brown sugar. Bourbon sticks out more as it warms.

Taste Follows nose well. Sweet milk chocolate, roasted malt and vanilla initially. Then the back end is wood and bourbon-esque flavors that stick around for a while.

Mouthfeel is velvety and slightly oily. Bourbon profile is slightly sticky, low carbonation.

A 375ml bottle of 2015 vintage and poured into a snifter glass.

Appearance: It poured a deep dark black colour with a thin khaki head that dissipated almost just as quickly but leaves some nice spotty lacing.

Aroma: Strong bourbon, sweet brown sugar, chocolate fudge brownie, molasses and vanilla.

Taste: Starts with sweet molasses followed by bourbon and dark chocolate with some light toffee, caramel and coffee.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with low carbonation and a warming alcohol feel.

Overall: A very good Russian Imperial Stout with a nice hit of bourbon that is strong but not harsh and nicely complemented with chocolate, caramel and coffee flavours. I would definitely buy this again.

Poured from a 375ml bottle into a tulip glass:

Appearance: pours black as night, with a totally opaque body; even when swirled. Carries a slim, khaki-colored head on top, with a lot of retention, and some spotty lacing.

Aroma: very sweet smelling, with lots of bourbon-y, fudgy scent. Very dessert-y and chocolate-forward. Not much barrel char, it's a very soft, vanilla laden barrel character.

Taste: super sweet and decadent. I got lots of dark chocolate, lots of sweet bourbon character with just a touch of smoky roast. Finishes very, very silky and luscious.

Feel: full-bodied, though maybe needed a TOUCH more body to support the heavy sweetness. It's picking hairs at this point though.

Overall: this is a great barrel-aged stout. Tons of sweetness, extremely decadent and complex flavor profile, and some subtle barrel character. Super nice.

Had this sent to me from Ohio. Very good.

(L) Very dark almost black with a thin mocca head.

(A) The aroma is sweet and coffee.

(T) The flavor is chocolate, dark fruit, coffee, a bit sweet, and I did not get much bourbon, and no alcohol taste. However, I may have served it a bit cold.

(F) A bit thin but easy drinking and overall delicious.

375ml bottle, served in a snifter glass.

Pours a dark brown, nearly black body, two finger offwhite head, good retention, not much lacing. Smells of molasses, oak, a bit of smoke, honey, chocolate, mild roast. Flavour is on the sweeter side, with the molasses being prominent, followed by dark chocolate, touch of dark fruit and roast, bourbon, a bit of smoke. Mouthfeel is full bodied, substantial, lower carbonation, a bit of sweeter molasses on the finish. Solid BA imperial stout with a bit more sweetness than I'd like, but has been put together well.

Poured into a snifter.
A - Pours dark with a small head that disappears quickly.
S - The aroma is molasses and bourbon.
T - The flavor is a little sweet and then the bourbon hits you. But its not harsh, just like a warm wave pouring over you.
M - Thinner than I expected, lacked the creaminess of the base RIS.
O - This is a very good beer but I enjoyed the base beer more. I would buy again.

Reviewed 2014 version. Based on drinking the base beer, I'm guessing later years are superior. This fizzed out pretty quickly leaving a flat dark brown beer. No legs, thinnish appearance. Smell has a lot of bourbon but not much of the base. Flavor is similar, with the base disappearing under oak / vanilla / cedar / leather / nougat from the spirit.

Second time I had this one. Only change I made was bumping up the smell a quarter point. Almost a blackish color with light edging upon drinking. Ever present mild lacing, healthy activity on each drink, and possible presence of particulates that are tough to see due to the darkness of the beer. Sweet malty smell with barrel hiding below. Unbelievable taste-rich, roasty, sweet, and boozy. Takes all the characteristics of a barrel aged stout, mixes them together, presents wonderfully. A little oily feel, but still fills the whole mouth with vibrancy. A truly excellent beer.

12.7 ounce bottle, 2016 vintage. Served in a Jackie O's snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. I like the aroma a lot, the brew smells like brown sugar, molasses, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, and some coffee. For the most part I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some burnt/charred malt and woody flavors noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked this brew a lot and I definitely recommend this, but then pretty much everything from Jackie O's is really good!

'15 bottle poured into rocks glass

Dark brown pour with no head at all. Thin, clear cola color toward the edges. At first a little bland in taste and smell, so I let this one warm and open up a bit. Subtle bourbon, coffee, and sweetness on the nose. Chocolate and whiskey are very sneaky and come out strong after an initial taste of mild flavors. Very thin(way more so than the nonBA version), like a flat soda. Pretty good overall.

The taste reminded me a lot of Parabola, which is obviously very high praise. Like all great BA stouts, the barrel flavor is very much present, but doesn't overpower the base beer. I had non-BA Coffee and Vanilla a couple days ago, and the barrel aging does wonders here, adding extra complexity and completely obscuring the alcohol flavor. This was a very good stout.

A: jet black with a pretty scant tan head of slight retention.
S: wafts big bourbon vanilla as the dominant note. Underneath there is some cacao, some anise, and a trace of ethanol.
T: Vanilla and wood up front with a chocolate finish. Quite sweet, but very tasty. Heat is well hidden here.
M: body is, at most medium full, and a touch under expectations and, while nicely silky, is a bit sticky with low feeling carbonation. There is a moderate heat on the swallow that is less evident to the tongue.
O: the stickiness is really the dominant knock here against what is otherwise a pretty stellar beer.

Definitely a beer to start cool and allow to warm. Initially creates a thin but uneven head, but eventually forms a nice ring as it progresses. The brown sugar absolutely provides a nice, but not over-the-top, sweetness. Bourbon, however, is a little hard to detect, and the body lacks heft.

Jackie O's Pub & Brewery - Bourbon Barrel Aged Dark Apparition. 11.5% ABV. 12.7oz bottle split between two snifters. 2016 release.

Look: Pitch black body, with a finger sized mocha colored head, which lapses into lacing.

Smell: Sweet bourbon, charred oak barrel, dark chocolate, dark fruit, caramel, and brown sugar.

Feel: Insanely smooth, with very little carbonation. Medium bodied.

Taste: Sweet bourbon, charred oak barrel, dark chocolate, dark fruit, caramel, and brown sugar all combine throughout from beginning to end. Gets a tiny bit boozy as it warms up, leaving a small burn.

Overall: I seem to end up having special versions of beers before the regular version, and that is the case with this; having the Bourbon Barrel Aged version first. I can say for sure, that this is damn good, with a great combination of flavors, without being too boozy.

A recent bottle sent by BA extraordinaire @LeperJim. There's no apparent bottle date, but the label states 2015. I'm guessing it's a fairly recent release. Pouring this 375ml in my 13oz. snifter.

Look- Pours a dark brown leaving a thin ring of tan foam around the glass. Very little carbonation is present.

Smell- Bourbon forward with some vanilla, dark chocolate, and brown sugar hiding in the back. A trace amount of molasses and oak as it warms up.

Taste- It begins with a bourbon explosion, opening up to some dark chocolate, coffee, tobacco, and dark cherry. There is a fair amount of oak that comes through in the finish.

Feel- While quite oily and coating the sides of the glass, it is a little on the thin side. A considerable amount of alcohol burn from the 11.7% abv.

Overall- If you love big bourbon flavor in your stouts as I do, then this is one to try. The only minor negatives in my world are the thin feel and slight lack of carbonation. The complex bourbon flavor more than makes up for that. A winner in my opinion and so glad a generous BA hooked me up!

In review is a 2015 vintage, thanks WesMantooth!

A - Pitch black with a thin, thick, toffee colored lacing ring, no carbonation, very thick and viscous.

S - Bourbon, vanilla, oak, roasted toffee.

T - Lots of bourbon and oak from start to finish, toffee, with a mild chocolate toffee sweet bitterness in the finish, lingering bourbon and dry oak in the mouth.

M - Big medium body, velvety smooth, sticky, very dry finish.

O - Lots of bourbon in this beer.
