Notes:
Brewed in the English barleywine tradition and aged in bourbon barrels for 17 months, this variant of Bourbon Barrel Brick Kiln’s deep mahogany hue gives way to aromas of toasted sugar, almond, and coconut. Conditioning on hazelnuts, cacao nibs, and vanilla brings brilliant confectionary tones to our beloved barleywine, named in tribute to the Southeast Ohio brick industry. The kilns of Athens Brick Company, established in 1890, once operated down the street from our current production brewery.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown with a minuscule amount of head. The nose is full of hazelnuts, chocolate, graham crackers, and some toffee. The taste is wonderful. Super smooth and creamy. Hazelnuts until the cows come home. If you don't link hazelnuts, don't drink this beer. Getting some additional layers of bourbon, chocolate, bread, toffee, maple, vanilla, toasted coconut, and a hint of brown sugar. Definitely not a typical barleywine - the typical toffee notes over very much overshadowed by the hazelnuts. Still, an excellent beer!

Body pours a black with small initial head and no lacing if consequence. Very low carbonation.
Aromas of the barrel, hazelnuts and light vanilla.
Taste generally follow nose with the addition of cacao notes. The barrel's sweet bourbon flavor is pronounced, but the alcohol is masked. Sipping is advised to contemplate the flavors.
The mouth feel is luxurious and smooth.

This is good, maybe a little too busy, but good. All three additions to a stellar barrel aged barleywine are here. The cocoa come across like Hershey's syrup, the vanilla is prominent, and there is an overall nuttiness. The barrels and the base beer are hard but not impossible to discern. There is still a little toffee, but all the fruit character is gone. The body is definitely more still and thinner than regular Brick Kiln. Not one I'd try again.
