Excellent imperial stout from this Ohio Brewery. Great dark almost black color and nice lacing on the glass. Great smooth taste and finish.

Color as you'd expect, moderate tan cap that settles quickly. Aroma is surprisingly woody considering it isn't barreled at all - some vague earthiness from the walnut, a little vague sweetness from the syrup, traditional roasted malt. You can tell what the ingredients impart but yet somehow they lack a concrete identity.

Taste isn't far off from your run-of-the-mill stout; a well-made one, undoubtedly, but lacks distinction. There are traces of nut flavors floating around, but you can barely find any of the Belgian syrup the bottle proports. Ends pretty hoppy as well, which you may or may not like in a stout. Mouthfeel is a bit thin as well.

Thanks goes out to MastaaaGrillaaa for this brew, from NBS BIF#6

12.7 oz. Bottle

My first from this brewery.

Poured into a tulip a pretty nice dark brown/black color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice one-finger light tan head, which leaves a pretty nice medium size oil slick, and some sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, with some dark chocolate, toffee, vanilla, walnuts, some licorice. The taste is pretty nice, malty, with some dark chocolate, toffee, vanilla, walnuts, licorice. Full Body, ABV hidden pretty well, a pretty nice complex brew. Overall, this is pretty nice. Definitely like to see what else they have to offer.

L) Surprisingly very little head on this beer, even with a vigorous pour into my snifter. It is a tad old, but I wouldn't think it would effect things that much. It is a lovely, oily, black however.

S) There are notes of espresso, vanilla, toffee, and even some bourbon notes, but no tree nut vibes.

T) The taste is rich and roasty. There is definitely some strong espresso, a lingering sweetness from the malt, a smidgeon of vanilla or marshmallow, and some notes of roasted walnut or chestnut (but I honestly wonder how much of me detecting those flavors isn't just me knowing they are in there). The tree nut flavors most certainly are not dominant.

F) The beer is medium-low carbonated with a silky mouth feel.

O) It isn't bad, I wish the walnut flavors were stronger and that the beer actually had a head and lacing, but perhaps my bottle is funky.

A 12.7 ounce bottle with no visible date recently sent to me by fellow BA LeperJim. Pouring it in a 12oz. snifter for the review.

Look- Pours a thick oily looking dark brown that borders black leaving a few centimeters of tan colored foam. It appears nitro-like with very active tiny carbonation bubbles that surface with a reverse cascading action. Some moderate lacing is left behind.

Smell- Dark roasted malt, molasses, figs, tobacco and a hint of char.

Taste- Dark roasted malt, figs, raisins, tobacco, leather and some char. There's a slightly bitter taste in the finish before it opens up to reveal something woody in nature. I'm guessing the black walnuts?

Feel- Medium thick and oily with a slightly bitter semi dry finish.

Overall- A very well made non barrel aged stout that delivers some complex flavor. It almost tastes like it was oak aged. I'm guessing the black walnuts may have something to do with that? Whatever the case, this is one every lover of robust stouts should check out.

Pours pitch black with a thin brown head that dissipates leaving nothing but a ring of tannish foam along the outside of the beer.

Smell has notes of sweet carmelized syrups, walnuts, some roasted malt notes, and a hint of dark fruits.

Taste has notes of walnuts, some cartelized syrup, roasted malts, strong pine notes and some sap. Lots of bitterness on the back end. Some chocolate notes are here - but more like bakers chocolate with some bitterness. Im kind of surprised by how bitter this stout is. Its not bad, but for some people that could be an immediate turnoff.

Feel is sticky and oily. Mild carbonation. Some heat on the back end - drinks like more than 10%.

Overall this is a solid stout, but I'm just not seeing it. For me, the bitterness is a bit much, and its a very hot stout. Definitely more of a unique taste.

Bottle, no apparent date (bought at brewery):
Pours a dark, not quite oily color - I'll go black. The tan head builds nicely - almost two fingers. Large bubbles find a home in creaminess. The head is slow to leave, and is ready to return on a swirl.

The nose has a little roastiness, but I really get the walnut (mostly a oily nut, but knowing it's walnut makes the scent more obvious). It's actually impressive, but also leads to me wanting some of the stout base.

The feel is one of a lighter, more oily stout. The taste is roastiness with a cola aspect. Now this is only one part of the beer - I'd say just less than 50% of it. The walnut is a big part of this beer (again, mildly impressive in itself). The skins and slightly bitter notes of the nut fight the stout - and tend to grab my palate more. The back end comes with what appear to be the PNW hops - piney bitterness which I think loses me a tad as it's a little too bitter after the nut bitterness.

Really it's the back end bitterness that doesn't work for me. I wish the perceived hop bitterness were dialed back. I prefer a roasted char bitterness in my stouts - perhaps accented by hops. This one comes across to heavy-handed on this aspect.
