bottle 59 of 300 from 2013, big thanks to evan12 for the share. enjoyed from a mini snifter at the southampton IRS release and then the capped bottle was uncapped at home and re-enjoyed from a JO mini...review is a combo of notes from first impression and 2nd impression a few hours later.

a - brew poured a watery black, but coated the glass in stoutiness. what little head present was gone quick. some nice dark brown highlights but once the head was gone, it was gone for good...little sludgy.

s - nose is fairly peaty. folks at the release when the bottle was first opened were surprised that this vintage seemed to lack some of the magic of previous vintages (or other bottles)...some fruitiness from the rum was there, but hidden behind the soggy peat the leads in the nose.

t - flavor follows the nose to a degree leading with peat, but presenting a wash over the rum infused stout.

m - mouth is carbonated and a bit chewy, fairly big and bold, even for the style.

o - overall, a bit of a let down. i've had several JO brews over the years and always heard that this was the highlight and i've definitely had others that were better. nice to finally get the tick though.

Molasses, Walnuts, Booze, Wood

Here we have an Imperial Stout that has seen a healthy duration of rum barrel aging with the company of walnuts, the rum character is pleasantly noticeable which compliments the massive stout character this brew brings to the table. The 11.5% abv does not show itself until about halfway through the glass, new subtle complexities with each sip. Finishes with suggestions of walnuts, floral alcohol, brown bread, mild molasses, and faint woody rum ... amazing.

A friend was in Ohio the day these were released, he snagged me two bottles. I wanted to love this beer but the rum sweetness was over the top, saccharine. I'll revisit this brew again - maybe my palate was off when I first tried it. There's a lot going on, wood, char, nuttiness - but the rum does a damn good job of masking those elements.

Thanks to rudzud.

No head, pitch black long legs.

Nose light, mild dark choc, cocoa and mild fluffy nougat, faint barrel notes.

Taste sweet cocoa, caramel, aged dark malts, some rum and boozy notes, chewy dark caramel malts, fudgey cocoa, char, etc. Mild bitterness and earthy hop.

One of the best rum beers that I've had. Great mouth feel, well balanced, subtle but tangible rum notes.

375ml bottle from the 2014 release. Poured into a snifter 11/19/2014.

A- Dark black body, oily and thick. Half finger offwhite head, minimal retention time, no lacing. Has nice legs on it. Pretty much looks like what the name implies. [4.25]

S- Sweet rum, dark fruit, oak, dark chocolate. Not particularly complex, but for a rum-barrel aged beer, the rum really plays nicely with the rest of the base beer. One of the few rum-barrel aged beers where this is the case. [4.25]

F- Smooth milk chocolate, rum sweetness, dark fruits, oak, dark chocolate, finishing with a mild piney bitterness. Nice complexity, and as in the nose, the rum plays nicely with the rest of the beer. This definitely works. [4.25]

M- Thick bodied, on the lower end of carbonation for the style. Smooth, slick and sticky. This is fairly nice with a slightly over-bittered finish. [4.25]

O- This was pretty impressive in how the rum was so strong but played very nicely with the rest of the beer. Nice complexity and mouthfeel as well. This is a more than solid stout to try. [4.25]

Final score: 4.25

Bottle (2011)

Thanks for opening this with me, DarthKostrizer!

(Aged for 6+ months)

Black throughout with a moderately sized brown head that leaves dots and spots of lace down the glass. This has appropriate visible carbonation per the style.

A somewhat strange aroma, especially for the style. There's a good amounts of wood and caramel aroma, along with some off-putting acidic/funk character. I'm sure that isn't intended. There's some chocolate and roast elements as well, but something is off here.

The flavor is also I'm sure unintended funked and acidic. The wood notes taste moldy, the rum flavors sharp and acidic, and the rich chocolate and cream flavors don't hide something going wrong here.

Medium bodied with moderate to high carbonation.

Not good.
