Growler shared by Lee via a BA in OH – much obliged!

Pours black with a tan head that leaves decent lacing.

Smells of smooth roasted malts with large amounts of dark chocolate and a smooth nuttiness. The only one I can definitively pick out is hazelnuts but there are others in there.

Tastes similar to how it smells, though the nut influence is not as pronounced. Rich roasted malts up front are joined quickly by toasted nut flavors. Midway through the nuttiness is cut by the addition of smooth dark chocolate that carries through to a moderately bitter ending. Mouthfeel is very good, with grainy carbonation.

Overall this was a very solid beer and a surprising one as no one knew the story behind the growler’s contents. Very interesting and well worth a shot.

Thanks to Mishugga for hooking up a 32 oz growler of this. This being a rather rare treat, and my 1 year BA anniversary having just past, it seems like a good time for my first ever review:

A: Color is about as close to black as brown can get. Head was a little weak.
S: Holy nuts! If you put this under my nose blindfolded, I would definitely think I was getting a nut brown ale. Some nice roasty notes come through too.
T: The nuttiness. is very abundant here. If I were going to label this one, I'd call it an imperial black nut brown ale, with the nut brown ale part slightly dominating the stout part. I'm not sure what nuts they are using in here, but I get walnuts quite a bit, maybe pecans.
M: A bit thin for an imperial stout, which is why I would rather call it an imperial brown ale.
O: I liked this beer a lot. For my first review, this is a very difficult one to review to style, as it is its own thing. Poor imperial stout. Poor nut brown ale. Fantastic beer!

Wonderful stuff here.

Beautiful nitro pour at the brewery. "Beer Porn"

Nutty, soft vanilla/crème notes. Chocolate and coffee.

Mhm. This is certainly not bad at all. You can definitely gather the roasty, nutty flavors right off the bat. Maybe roasted almonds. The chocolate and crème aren't far behind.

A slick, smooth elixir that is far from cloying.

Killer. They are not in the business of normal, run of the mill craft brews. Always a twist or turn with these guys.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottle #189/300. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Black with an off-white collar. A few wisps.

Smell - Dark chocolate. Lots of nuttiness. Nonspecific nuts, I guess because they used a variety. Boozy.

Taste - Incredibly nutty. Dark chocolate with a ton of nuts. A little bit astringent in the finish with the slightest red wine flavor.

Mouthfeel - Chewy. Slightly harsh in the finish from the red wine flavors and the nuts.

Overall - Well, the nut treatment is very strong. Too strong, I think.

Appearance: Black, brown finger of head, plenty lace.

Aroma: mild woodsy bourbon, chocolate, coffee, roast, raisins, and there is a sweet nuttiness. It's really hard to pull out specific nuts since it melds so well. Coconut isn't a nut though lol

Taste: Chocolate and roasted malts, some espresso, light vanilla and woody bourbon. Again, its nutty, but specifics are difficult.

It's full bodied, somewhat chewy. A nice and different treatment to a great stout.

Thanks John!

bottle shared with alex for the fourth of july party. split into twin tasters/

jet black pour with a good inch and a half of wonderfully colored head on top started off the session just right.

aroma is dark roasted nuts, cocoa, a ton of rich brown sugar and a touch of tobacco. really just complex as hell and not at all what i was expecting. a bit thin on the feel, but not terrible just more of a big stout then an ris. still though the flavor came across very, very well with each sip complenting the one before. dark, dark chocolate, lots of roasted malts and tons of rich, dark flavors. this was exactly what i was looking for. smooth and creamy finish left the flavor of light smoke an brown sugar on the tongue with a touch of vanilla sealing it off.

I had this on-tap at the Jackie O's release event this weekend. Poured into a sample glass.

Appearance: Pours black with a layer of fluffy tan head that fades to a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Quite roasty and sweet with some dark chocolate and nuts.

Taste: Roasty cashew heaven. Dark chocolate with some alcohol. Very nutty with a somewhat bitter finish. This beer tastes like alcoholic cashews, amazing.

Mouthfeel: The body is on the thick side of medium with smooth carbonation and a slick finish.

Overall: This is probably the best nut beer I have ever had. Very natural and really good. A great desert beer.

shared by mishuggah march 27 (2011) out of a growler into a spooky night of the living ale's tasting glass. cheers dood!

maple, candied walnuts, coffee, sweet chocolate, biscuits.

light tan head that you basically had to swirl to see. body was a dark brown black with transparent brown edges.

i didn't find it to taste as sweet as it smelled, although it tasted like a moist piece of chocolate cake. i picked up some nuttiness resembling walnuts accompanied with a slight roasty character.

light-medium, creamy, slightly oily

i enjoyed the nutty chocolate nose better than the taste. there were some interesting layers of flavor. i enjoyed the chocolate aspects best and would have preferred a stronger nut presence. i prefer my imperial stouts thicker in mouthfeel, however, overall, this was a good beer.

4 oz. sample at JO's 6th Anniversary. I prefer Oil of Aphrodite everytime over Dark App, but as an "Oilized" beer, I had high hopes for this.

4.0 A: Black color. Came with just a touch of creamy beige head that retained well.

4.5 S: It's Dark App...with NUTZ! Allegedly brewed with five types of nuts, but I'm not sure whether black walnuts (the feature nut of Oil) are included. Moderate roastiness, good bit of coffee, and sharp, almost spicy chocolate. Dark caramel malts and molasses. The nuts put this over the top. Really, it is amazing. Cashews and peacans specifically speak out.

5.0 T: The nuts take over the taste. Tons of nuttiness and the variety of nuts used is fully realized. Plenty of chocolate again. Coffee right after that. Light to moderate roastiness that lingers into the aftertaste. Good bit of molasses with light caramel.

4.5 M: Whether it is from the nuts or the newest batch, this is much heartier than the Dark Apps I've had in the past. Heavy body, but still on the lighter end of the spectrum. Good moderate carbonation and great creaminess. Super smooth.

5.0 D: I hope JO's and every other brewery jam pack beers with nuts. It seems to do magic every time. I've always though Dark App was tasty, but far from elite. Nuts have made this beer into just that.

Another big one from Jackie O's thanks to rudzud. Bottle 151/300

Pours a light fizzy head, light lacing, super dark pitch black thick beer with long legs.

Nose is super dark, acrid roast, a definite nutty aroma with hints of coffee, dark char, bit of super dark chocolate, little booze as well.

Taste is again super dark malt, acrid roast out front again, bit of dark chocolate and char, burnt caramel, thick syrupy sweet malt character too, bit lush creamy, hint of over roasted coffee. Then nutty flavors, mixed nuts, chewy, a bit of a candy bar like character with teh choc, nuts, and caramel. Light vanilla barrel notes I think, butter earthy hops and biter chocolate, rich. Finish is long dark choc, bit more barrel notes I think, and more bitter acrid char.

Mouth is full bod, rich dark thick, bit syrupy, some warming booze, decent lighter carb.

Overall not bad, many of the other Dark Apparitions I think were better, but it's def interesting and tasty, just a bit too acrid, or maybe it's too fresh.
