A very nice Belgian style dubbel. Poured from the growler I got just a few hours ago from my
LONG road trip, this ale is a medium brown in color with hints of red and a very thin off white
layer of foam that dies quickly leaving decent lacing. Nose of earthy Belgian yeast, brown
sugar, and light Belgian spices. Flavors have a light brown sugar flavor, earthy dark fruits of
plums and cherries, and a nice sweetness that presides from start to finish. Lightly syrupy
mouthfeel is lightly carbonated leaving a sweet finish. Very nice.

I had this on-tap at Jackie O's during the release even this weekend. Poured into a sample glass.

Appearance: Pours a murky reddish brown with not much head at all.

Smell: Sweet malt with some brown sugar and banana. Quite mild overall.

Taste: This beer tasted like it wants to be sweet, but falls a bit short. The malt is a bit watered down. There is some fruit but no real maple flavor. The finish is bitter with some alcohol.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with smooth carbonation and a bitter finish.

Overall: I really wanted the maple to be more prevalent. This beer should have been a little bit sweeter.

Had this the night before the June 25th release. Received in a snifter.

3.5 A: Deep amber/light brown color. Came filled to the top with no head.

3.5 S: Overload of the JO's character. I like the JO's house taste, but this might be a bit much. Woody, with an almost astringent booziness. Lightly vegetal with a nutty brown malt component. Light spiciness with clove running the show. Light prune and tobacco flavors.

3.0 T: A bit weak on flavor. Nutty, tobacco, plum and prune, with a clove spiciness. Not as boozy as the nose.

2.5 M: Lighter medium body. A bit undercarbonated and the carbonation itself is dead (far from spritzy).

3.0 D: Not a big fan of this one.

On tap at Jackie O's.

Pours a moderate brown color with a good off-white head and a bit of lacing as it makes its way down the glass. The nose is really quite nice and enjoyable. Nice aromas of sweet and dark fruits plus a bit of a light earthy character. Mild spice there as well. Some sweetness in the background. Everything is very well integrated. The flavor hits all the same notes. The sweetness is there but not overpowering and works really well with the yeast and fruit components to the brew. Mild earthiness in the back. Really, really well done. Medium feel with a good body and a slightly-sweet finish. Really impressive, especially for an American-brewed version of the style.

A-pours a mostly transparent dark brown liquid with a tan colored head.

S-the nose is faint and sweet, plums and sugar with light yeast notes. hard to get a lot here and seem like a mess of sugars.

T-dirty sweet malts, somewhat meaty. stale old plums and cherries, under attenuated, astringent in the back.

M-medium body and undercarbonated with a thin finish.

D-simple, sweet, under attenuated and lacks belgian characteristics.

On tap at Jackie O's on the eve of One Funky Afternoon. Served in a stemmed chalice/wine glass hybrid thing.

The description of this new one states that its brewed with local maple syrup.

Tobacco brown in color without much of a head. Its pretty opaque but the edges allow some light to pass.

This is very earthy and quite yeasty. Large aromas of tobacco float up from the glass. This beer does have a healthy representation of Belgian style dark fruits but lacks the black cherry aromas that many dubbels have. Not much maple can be picked out but I think it probably lends to this beer's sweet aromas of earth and tobacco.

This stuff is very nice. Wow. The earthiness is carried over well but doesn't get in the way of the sweet fruits and yeast elements. Lots more tobacco, figs, prunes, raisins, even some cocoa and vanilla. The finish is where the maple has been hiding. It peeks out very quickly, but what a nice surprise it is for the taste buds.

Full bodied with a low carbonation. This beer is very smooth. I'm not sure but I'd wager the addition of maple syrup has helped this beer gain its lovely smoothness and full body.

I have yet to have a Belgian style from BC and the Jackie O's crew that has been less than stellar. This one was one of my favorites of the weekend. You hear me Brad? Keep up the awesome work with theses Belgians!
