Poured into a snifter. 2012 vintage, bottle #81 of 192. This will be a much better review than my "on-tap" one.

4.0 A: Clear deep amber brown color. One and a half fingers of tan, frothy/creamy head. Retention is pretty good and a moderate sized ring of lacing is left.

4.5 S: Lot of bourbon in the nose. Leathery and earthy with mountain stream water, raisin, plum, oak, and hints of vanilla. The brown sugar in the base comes out quite well and I imagine some of the brown sugar aroma may be coming from the bourbon. Speaking of the base, it smells damn good too. Raisin, currants, prunes, caramel, toffee, and molasses. A touch of peppery spice from the yeast. Booze is there, but for the most part, it is well hidden. Really great smelling brew. Deep, complex, and with well integrated aromas.

4.5 T: Taste is wonderful as well. Bourbon is the lead component again. Super leathery, earthy, with raisin and plum fruits, and oak and vanilla. Brown sugar, caramel, toffee, molasses. Currants, more raisins, tobacco and plum. Again pepper from the yeast and some clove as well. A touch of tannic astringency. The booze is a bit more aggressive in the taste, but it's not too bad. It's a bourbony type booze.

4.0 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Lightly spritzy with a velvety creaminess.

4.0 D: Damn good brew. I wish I had gotten a full glass of this at the release. Trying to tick there becomes an obsession though.

Thanks to Corbet for the bottle, and the 6th anniversary mini-snifter into which the beer was poured!

A deep, dark reddish brown color, with a pinky finger of tan head that settled to a ringlet, dabbling the glass with lacing. Nice aroma! Big barrel character, bourbon-vanilla, brown sugar, scents of sweet candy. More of this in the taste, but not quite as pronounced, with more nuttiness coming out; bourbon-soaked oak, vanilla, brown sugar, some neutral booze, background herbal notes and bready yeast, though nothing particularly Belgian, so to speak. Medium body, felt about right, slick mouthfeel, somewhat drying in the finish, moderately low carbonation, with a lasting but perfectly tolerable boozy heat. Though I must say, it's better--strangely--on the colder side, as the booze really significantly came out a lot more when it warmed, decreasing the smoothness a bit. A quite interesting beer, not really at all what I expected, and nice overall.

Big thanks to rudzud for sharing this one.

Light fizzy head, little lacing but mostly bubbles, murky dark molasses brown color.

Nose is tons of brown sugar, molasses like, little syrupy, toffee light nutty, then some bourbon and bit of toasty oak, bit of dark fruit like date paste, mild booze and nice fig aroma.

Taste sweet brown sugar, lots of fig and dark fruits, candy like, little molasses and toffee, hint nougat, etc. Nice barrel with mild vanilla and toasty barrel and some decent bourbon, lots of candy sweet like. Little syrupy candy. Finish is sticky sweet, fair bitterness, little piney hop like thing way on the finish.

Mouth is thicker little syrupy, decent but a bit lighter carb.

Overall great.

Shared with JLindros. Bottle #'d 8/192, 2012 vintage.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice murky brown hue with s nice light thin head that leaves faint lacing and s nice blanket.

S - Aromas of bourbon, brown sugar, dark fruits. Nice light Belgian esters.

T - Taste is opposite of the nose, tons of bourbon, vanilla, figs, brown sugar, light Belgian esters, sweet malts. Delicious.

M - Mouthfeel is a bit too carbonated for a Belgian, sharp.

O - Overall I enjoyed this beer, however, not my favorite Jackie O's. Still, a delicious Belgian strong with good bourbon and dark fruit notes. Solid beer.

This beer was served chilled into a goblet and allowed to warm up.

A- The body of the beer is murky brown. The head was a thin light tan coloration. The head resolved down into a ring of foam.

S- The aroma of the beer has plenty of molassis, brown sugar, major bourbon barrel notes, vanilla oaken notes, hops come around with citrus blast, caramel and cocoa, alcohol plays around in a bourbonesque way.

T- This beer is sweet on the straight away. Lots of brown sugar, molassis, sweet vanilla bourbon, caramel, toasted notes lead into some slieghtly roasted malts, alcohol of the bourbon sort warm my palate up, the hops bring a pleasing citrusy blast and are consumed into the sweetness.

M- The body of the beer is medium and well carbonated. The alcohol is hot but is a welcome component to the beers character. Its really sweet upfront but between the hops and the alcohol this beer dries out.

O- This beer is a bourbon sipper. The beer has a few kinks but its still a very nice sipper.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Murky brown with a wispy surface. Sticky looking as I swirl it.

Smell - Awesome bourbon and oak aroma. Brown sugar. Belgian yeast. Great barrel character.

Taste - Less impressive. Brown sugar, bourbon, and vanilla all come through. Oaky flavor. Bitter throughout. Loses its Belgian character in the taste.

Mouthfeel - Boozy and bitter. Medium heavy, but well carbonated. Maybe even too much.

Overall - Lacking in beer complexity, but the barrel is fantastic. Too bitter, too. Wish I'd had the base beer.

Many, many thanks to csmiley for the bottle.

2012 Release – Bottle #79/192

Barrel Aged ½ Shark Alligator ½ Man pours a very dark amber color. It’s hazy, but isn’t opaque. Holding it to light reveals nice burgundy and garnet highlights. A light tan head covers the surface. It doesn’t rise much above that. The abv may be a little too much for it. Retention was short, and lacing was definitely light. Not bad.

The nose is good. It smells very sweet and sugary. The malt base smells like a mix of caramel and chocolate. Dark fruit notes are very strong throughout. Plum is most notable. Bourbon is definitely noted, but its presence is moderate. It smells like it plays that role very well, complementing the fruity and malty notes nicely. Oak is noted, but smells secondary. I’m not getting much Belgian yeast. Perhaps it’s buried. Alcohol is there, but doesn’t come through overly strong. Smells good.

The flavor is very consistent with the nose. It’s very sweet up front. Brown sugar and caramel flavors are abundant. Light cocoa follows. Dark fruit is in the mix. Plum is noted and adds a tangy quality to the overall flavor. It’s interesting. Bourbon has a moderate presence and complements the other flavors, creating a rich flavor profile. Oak is also a product of the barrel-aging. It’s secondary, but adds nice depth and character. I’m still not getting much in the Belgian department. I wish more was going on in that department. Alcohol is there, but isn’t warm or hot. Finishes sweet and tangy.

The body is on the slightly lighter side of medium. Carbonation is light and soft, but the body feels a bit thin and insubstantial. More would be better. It is tasty and goes down easy though. This bomber isn’t lasting very long.

Jackie O’s always develops some quirky beers. Some in name, some in substance, and in some cases…both. This is a case of both. The barrel aged aspect of it is well done, but it is lacking on Belgian side. Any evidence of its Belgian character just doesn’t come through. Good beer nonetheless. Definitely worth checking out.
