Another Jackie O's brew from hotpipes. Cheers!

From a bomber into a snifter
Bottle 177 of 300

APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, medium looking, fizzy, tan head with half decent retention. Head quickly recedes to a ring only. Clear bistre brown body with no carbonation evident. A slight ring remains until the end but leaves no real lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Oak, bourbon, alcohol and spicy aromas on the nose. Dark fruits, grapes, dates and raisins as well. Notes of brown sugar and dark caramel as well. Bold nose with plenty of complexity from the barrel and base beer.

TASTE: Caramel and brown sugar up front with lots of barrel and spicy alcohol at the swallow. Bourbon, oak, light vanilla and strong caramel sweetness, brown sugar and dark fruits linger on the palate. Boozy and spicy alcohol with plenty of malt sweetness. Quite flavorful but slightly too boozy perhaps.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Enough weight on the palate, creamy enough as well, though a touch harsh going down and finishes rather sticky. Heat lingers. Big burn, lots of heat and a touch prickly perhaps. A little rough going.

OVERALL: This is okay and relatively complex and interesting, but the harsh and hot feel detract from the experience. This is very boozy. I can definitely see some potential here, and perhaps leaving it alone for a couple years will give it time to mellow out a little, but as it stands now, this is too rough to really be as enjoyable as it wants to be. If you have one, hang onto it until the calendar reads 2015 at least. Thanks again hotpipes. Always good times.

Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter.

Appearance: Pours a dark mahogany with a layer of off white head that goes away quickly.

Smell: Very sweet and rather fruity. Dark fruits, raisins and plum. The pappy gives it a caramel smell.

Taste: Sweet and malty up front, dark fruit, brown sugar, and caramel. The bourbon flavor a are very smooth. The finish is full of sweet heat and remains smooth.

Mouthfeel: The body is on the syrupy side with a good amount of carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I thought this was a nice sweet beer. Quite smooth and easy to drink.

Catching up on old notes, thanks to rudzud for sharing.

No head, super dark molasses brown color.

Nose... oh wow! tons of aged wood and smooth bourbon, vanilla, light cocoa, caramel, nutty, even some dark fruits, so much great aged bourbon though.

Taste is also awesome, rich dark malts, caramel, quad flavors, sweet malts, brown sugar and molasses, dark fruits and nuts again, then barrel! bourbon, velvety bourbon, an actual Pappy taste surprisingly with that aged smooth woody vanilla bourbon flavor, more vanilla barrel, rich and so great. Also get hints of cinnamon nutty flavor. Some warming booze, tingly.

Mouth is thick and rich, creamy, lighter carb.

Overall amazing!

22oz bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary glass. Generously shared by rudzud at a recent tasting. I love showing up at a tasting and having a beer like this pulled out...a super rare beer...one that I had never even heard of, but sounds amazing - Pappy Van Winkle barrels - how can this be bad?

A - Pours a beautiful clear body with a dark amber brown color. No head at all forms...barely a collar left behind.

S - Butterscotchy, booze...bourbon is strong but super smooth, dark caramel and dark brown sugar...really nice.

T - Butterscotch up front and very, very smooth. Smooth, sweet bourbon goodness. Amazingly smooth, vanilla and caramel...did I mention how incredibly smooth this is?

M - Smooth bourbon, sweet. Medium body with lower carbonation.

O - Excellent. The barrels worked some magic here. This was one of the highlights of the night of one outstanding beer after another.
