Notes:
Brewed in the English Barleywine tradition and aged in rum barrels for 21 months, Rum Barrel Brick Kiln’s deep mahogany hue gives way to bright aromas of toasted sugar, almond, and coconut. Extended aging in rum barrels adds deep notes of vanilla, baking spices, and gentle tones of cherry to Brick Kiln, named in tribute to the Southeast Ohio brick industry. The kilns of Athens Brick Company (est. 1890) once operated down the street from our current production brewery.

Nice looking reddish mahogany brown on the pour, settling into a darker fully opaque brown with just a hint of red. Half finger of beige colored head that receded to a thin ring. Decent legs. Aroma is rich with caramel and sweet molasses, along with vanilla. Very nice smelling beer. The sweetness on the tongue is nicely balanced by rum / rum barrel flavors & toffee. Nice warming from the alcohol but no alcohol burn. Silky smooth and medium + feel. Overall I'm really digging this. Good beer.

2021 bottling, no other dating.
This is a nice change of pace but bourbon brick kiln is a better beer. Plenty of brown sugar and molasses up front, pretty sweet overall. There is a biting, spicy oak note at the finish that comes on a bit too strong. The body and carbonation are a little on the light side. Solid, but my least favorite offering from Jackie O's so far.

Brick Kiln – Rum Barrel from Jackie O’s Brewing. 12.7 oz bottle purchased online from Jackie O’s, $15.82 (Including tax and shipping), $ 1.246/oz. Stored at 40 degrees after purchase. Reviewed 03/04/22. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated bottle. Served at 54.3 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 58.6 degrees.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), slight haze.
Body – Brown (SRM 20), opaque. When rear-lite, weak light penetration at the edges.
Head – Average (Maximum 2.5 cm, aggressive center pour), a little yellower than wheat, fizzy and rapidly diminishing to leave a 0.2 cm crown and no cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4 – Weak toffee and rum. No hops, no malt, no yeast. No alcohol.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins slightly sweet with toffee and weak rum overtones. No alcohol burn until it hit the stomach, producing a mild warming. No hops, no malt, no yeast. Ethanol (11.6 % ABV, as marked on container) is otherwise hidden. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4.5 – Full, creamy, soft caressing carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 (After deducting 0.25 point for undated bottle) Overall, drinkable but the price point is ‘way too high for what you get. Flavor and aroma are weak and muddled with neither being very defined. Label is the current style, so it looks like this one is back from Davey Jones’ Locker.

2012 bottle#19 of 216, thanks to rudzud.
Light foamy fizzy head, pretty much pitch black, decent but not crazy legs.
Nose is light interesting, weird earthy cheesy like rum thing, big earthy fruity rum, big booze like chewy fudgey caramel, mild paper.
Taste sweet candy syrup, fruity mess, cardboard and fruit syrup, mild dark malt like mess, almost soy sauce and syrup, mild rum.
Mouth lighter thin, decent but light carb.

Shared with JLindros. 2012 vintage, bottle 19/216.
A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a super dark brown nearly black with a thin head that fades to leave light wisps and halo.
S - Aromas of light rum, caramel, older hops, lighter sweet malts, light dark fruits and raisins.
T - Taste is similar to the nose, lots of sweetness, light rum, good dark fruits, little barrel notes, faint caramel sweetness, fruit syrup. Odd almost cardboard notes.
M - Mouthfeel is thin, lightly carbonated.
O - Overall this beer was really mediocre. Unpleasant beer with a fair amount of off flavours. Ehhh

Bottle # 42/216. Batch '12.
Pours a hazy orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that fades to nothing. No lace on the drink down. Smell is of malt, dark fruit, sugar, rum, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with plum and prune flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of woody bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a tasty plum and prune quality in the flavor.
