Single bottle.. Poured into Dogfish Spiegelau glass. Pours a goldenrod yellow with a 3 finger head. A complex nose: clean, fresh, but no clear direction on bitter/citrus/ or malt. Maybe a hint of lemon.
A grapefruit and lemongrass flavor right off the bat. You can definitely tell there is an english style influence with a bready malty mouthfeel. Aftertaste is mild bitterness, nothing out of the ordinary for an IPA. 6.8% is masked very well. As the beer warms I picked up some funky onion notes *not complaining about it, just caught me off guard*
They claim to use a monstrous amount of hops (varieties from England, Germany, and the U.S). I wasn't really blown away with Hop character. However, the complexity of the varieties is evident. I just moved up to the New York area and this is the first local IPA I have tried. I enjoyed my bottle. If you're not looking for a hop bomb, and like an intricate style of IPA, then I would give this a shot. If it is a selling point for you, a nearly 7% IPA six pack for $9 (upstate New York area price) is a pretty good deal.
I would definitely be interested in trying more from the brewery. The artwork on the bottle is pretty sick (A Medusa head with hops for hair instead of snakes). If I could convince Defiant Brewing to pay for the tattoo, I would totally get it.

My first trip to Defiant brewing was yesterday but it won't be my last. Great Brewery with amazing BBQ and excellent brews as well. I've spotted their brews many times but this was my first time trying any and Medusa was my fave. Not the best IPA I've had but a very good one that I will buy again. Nice aroma, good flavor and very smooth. Good stuff.

Fluffy head, mottled surface, pure white, sizzles down to the surface quickly, leaving more islands than a consistent coating, the lacing is thick in parts but mostly thinner streaks. The liquid is closer to amber orange than pure yellow gold, there’s some very fine particulate matter floating when you inspect closely, not many bubbles but they are fat and move vigorously. There’s a sour funkiness to the nose, metallic and herbaceous as in forest floor matter not fresh leafiness, sour mixed citrus tones, not getting much fruit, a bit flat and lacking in thrust for the type of beer, ends with some tea leaf and floral notes but never activates fully. In the mouth it’s full-bodied, round and soft, the creamy texture could be replaced by keener bite for freshness. More bready here with slightly livelier hops and snap. Peach, apricot, apple fruit, less of a citrus presence. Malty sweetness throughout, however, not in the form of distinct flavors. On the whole it just seems muddled and lacking in punctuation at the finish. Its monochrome nature would be more acceptable were it more refreshing for hot summer days and such.

12oz bottle poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Pours a slightly hazy orange amber color with a very thick, long-lasting head. A little sediment at the bottom. A bit too much head, quite frankly. Flowery, musty scent, not very inviting. Bitterness throughout the sip. I'm not a big fan of this one. I picked it up as part of a mix-n-match sixer. No freshness date on bottle and I suspect this one may be past its prime. (7.0)

A-pours a golden copper color with a fluffy white head with excellent retention that leaves a nice lacing
S-piney, grainy, biscuit in the background, "green" hop aroma
T-a bit muddled hop flavor, leaving biscuit and pine flavor in the background, a bit cloying
M-medium bodied
O-not a bad IPA but the flavors seem to meld to together and does not have distinct hop flavors

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a speiglau IPA glass.

Color is an amber golden with a thick frothy head.

Aroma is white toast with a citrusy hop aroma.

Taste is straight bitter throughout with grapefruit notes and lots of tropical citrus flavor.

Absolutely amazing IPA. I want more of these.

I tasted this a few years back and thought it was fairly mediocre. Not sure what's changed if it is the hop usage or I got a super fresh batch but this is a fantastic ipa this time around. Tons of simcoe, pungent spicy hop character with a very nice English ipa grain bill. Sweet breadyness balanced out by aggressive hop usage. This is right up my alley and for $8 a 6pk I will be buying plenty more. Just wish it had a date on the package so I could tell if it's gonna be another fresh batch again!

It's hard to review this beer mainly because so many IPAs blow this one way the hell out of the water. That said...for a choice at a Hooters that wasn't mass-market dog water, this served the purpose. Would I seek it out in the future? No. Would I get it on draft again in a pinch? It's entirely possible.

Orange-gold body, very good clarity. Three fingers of level white dense foam. Nice drippy lace.

Earthy, herbal hop aroma.

Big sweet malt base slides down the tongue. Juicy fruit follows, but doesn't quite pop. Big bitter bite. Very lingering bitterness.

Smooth, full mouthfeel.

A solid IPA, but not a must try.

Picked this up last week from the ShopRite in Parsippany, having never given this a go. I like IPA's to a large extent and wasn't sure if this would measure up to the others that I esteem highly. Although this didn't stand out to me, this was quite serviceable and easy to enjoy, given the relatively low alcoholic content of this and how smooth it was from start to finish.

Good pour and appearance to this, as the rich amber hue, frothy head, and stream of bubbles that made their way through the partially translucent liquid combined for a nice effect. Lots of floral and herbal notes in the aroma, which could be found in the taste as well. Not a ton of bitterness underneath that but what was there had a nice earthy and slightly metallic tinge to it. This beer had a nice resin kick to it, reminding me of a West Coast IPA without being as strong of full of citrus notes. Just a hint of butter in the aftertaste to go along with the English Tea feel that this had to it, as the hops faded away .

While not a session beer, I could have had another in a sitting easily, since the alcohol didn't make itself known throughout my sampling of this. While not a bad beer, there wasn't anything to dislike about this and it's a perfectly fine IPA by itself. Given how many standouts could be found on any shelf in this country, this IPA pales (not in appearance) to them but would be a good choice for anyone looking to kick back with a hoppy beer without being overwhelmed.

Pours hazed orange to amber with a thin head. Lacing sticks.

The smell is floral, piney, herbal.

The taste is floral, piney, herbal with a pale malt, slightly bready backing. Finishes with a bitter dryness.

Medium-bodied, and smooth despite abv (well-hidden) and bitter bite.

A nice hoppy - herbal/floral IPA!

On tap at the brewery. Lightly hazy amber/gold color with a decent cap of slowly settling white foam and nicely sticky lacing. Not a huge nose but dominated by very perfumy, floral hops and a faint sweet caramel malt undertone.

Flavor follows the nose but is a little bigger; quite flowery and perfumy; almost a jasmine note here; lesser resinous hop taste; moderately sweet maltiness held mostly in check. The flowery nature of the beer makes the biggest impression.

Medium bodied with medium, fairly crisp carbonation. Dry finish with a bit of lingering bitterness and slowly fading perfumey hops. A little one-note, but interesting. The hop profile will either appeal to you or not. I couldn’t see myself drinking this one too often but it’s not bad and is quite distinctive. Reminds me a bit of Rock Art’s IPA in all of it’s flowery glory, such as it is.

Poured from a 6TL at the Garden State Brewfest into an opaque, paper cup(!) - (sample glasses not awarded to the brewers due to limited supply)

A- Cannot really comment but what I saw looked appealing...clear, amber color with a soapy, white, 1-2 finger head.

S- Very aromatic with floral notes dominating the experience. As a matter of fact, this is the most floral IPA I have ever sampled. Really nice stuff.

T- Sweet caramel malt up front followed by a pungent, yet satisfying bitterness. Again, a very unique and pleasant experience.

M- Ample carbonation and proper temperature allowed all of the flavor and bitterness to shine.

O- A very unique and enjoyable twist on the American IPA style. Very pungent with the aroma, flavor and taste. I would recommend this brew to all that are fans of hops and who are able to acquire this offering from Defiant...well done!

Hazy dark golden with a fluffy white head. Aromas are mild mannered ... I can really only pull through the floral aromas from the hops. The flavor on this beer is pretty one-sided. Floral, bitter hops with little to no balance from the malt profile. The hops are a little spicy, but a more specific description proves difficult. Medium body and nicely carbonated, but really lacking in the areas that matter.

A- medusa pours a reddish copper body with the stickiest lacing on the sides. Early on a head shows up but slowly disappears

S- buttery theme with English malt. Some sweet flavors are present but I really don't notice a hop presence unless it's maybe the earthiness that shows up. I like a citric appearance

T- biscuit paired with caramel. Light with an evident watery presence. Caramel definitely shows up

M- good carbonation

O- not my preferred style of ipa but I liked the drinkability.

From a growler that I got filled from The Defiant Brewing Company -- poured into a pint glass.

Slightly hazy golden color. A nonexistent head with the first pour but a nice creamy off white head on the second pour. Some bubbles stuck to the glass. But hardly any noticeable carbonation. As the head fades, a faint ring around the glass.

Big time pine and juicy hop aroma! Caramel malt, bread and buscuits malt are noticeable in the background.

Very bitter -- metalic hops mixing with big bready malt. Sweet caramel is noticeable in the middle, then the metalic hops linger in the mouth.

Dry bitterness, medium carbonation -- although not noticeable in appearance, light body and easy to go down.

This is a big bitter IPA, all about the hops but the malt isn't scarce -- it helps smooth the taste out. If you're a hophead like me, this is for you.

As far as IPAs go, this wasn't an outstanding one, but certainly nothing too horribly wrong either. Average.

Pours a golden color, rather typical of an IPA. Smell is subtle, but solid. Notes of a little citrus, and of course hops.

In the taste, the brew just sort of let me down. Not all that exciting. Boring, I suppose. Medium hoppiness with some floral notes.

On draft at the brewery.

Poured a clear medium copper hue with a one finger frothy white head. There was very good retention and lacing.

The smell featured loads of diactyl with a potent herbal hop.

The taste was extreme for the style. Full buttery diactyl accompanied by a full blast of lingering hop spice. Grassy and herbal.

The mouthfeel was certainly toward the fuller side of the style.

Overall a potent and tasty example of the style. Full bodied and full flavored.

First off, this is one of my favorite breweries. No hype, just a pleasant place up the Hudson River to stop for some fresh beer done right. I often stop by when I'm in the area...about 25 miles north of my place in Manhattan.

Excellent IPA...nice hops, but not too bitter. This is a well-balanced IPA through and through. I favor the English-style where the hops are present and pronounced, but not too over the top.

I had one at the brewery and took a growler home Sunday evening. Now its Thursday, and I am finishing off the growler...better than ever.

Well done, Defiant!

One finger's worth of off white head briefly rests on a clear golden brew. Some sparse but persistent lace on the glass

Ah the familiar smell of English hops, that earthy and herbal aroma, mixes with rounded yeast, and some bready almost rye smelling malty sweet.

The taste doesn't disappoint. Not the fullest flavor EIPA, but nice. Bready malt quickly grabs some tasty herbal hop for the ride. That slightly tart yeast of the nose joins in, and picks up some floral before careening into a finish that is the wonderful slow motion earthy and herbal bitter finish of fine UK IPA's. As it warms hints of citrus work into the finish. Nice.

Mouthfeel is spot on for style, just enough carb., very viscous without polluting the palate, and a very tasty and clean finish.

Drinkability is wonderful. The tastiness and refreshingness of this would hold up for a session for sure.

Impression: First beer I've tried from this local brewery. Will have to try others, certain to get this again.

Had this one on tap today at the Copper Mine Pub in North Arlington NJ. It's about time I've found a Defiant brew that I actually enjoy!

Appearance: Pours a copper color with a 1 finger off white crown that displays moderate retention and good lace.

Smell: Earthy / herbal / "English" hops over a bready malt.

Taste: Same as nose...Yum!

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderately prickly carbonation.

Drinkability: Enjoyable enough for me to order more than one!

Growler pour from the brewery about 75 mins ago. (reasonable price of $7.50 to refill an empty growler) Pours moderatly hazed, almond amber, the head is medium tan and quite expressive, frothy, lasting and then leaves all kinds of fine sheeting and extensive lacing. Nice looking brew. The sniffy snif reveals grainy and resinous hops. Well hopped and tasty IPA. More resin, pine notes, with a nice long, mellow finish. More then respectable IPA. Quite dry. Well done, perhaps my favorite Defiant offering to date
