A hearty red-brown “Wee Heavy,” Scotch Ale has all the smokey sweet complex malt goodness you could wish for. Peated, caramel and lightly toasted malts brewed just right give you a smooth beer with a delicate hop finish and creamy head.

Scotch Ale pours a dark amber color, with a huge, frothy, long lasting lacing head. Sweet and earthy aroma. Flavor is very palatable, sweet, smokey, earthy, but blends very nicely. Good body and feel. Overall, very nice scotch ale, nice complex flavors, a bit on the lighter side, but blends and comes together very well.

Poured a translucent black tea color with a significant light brown head that disappeared very quickly. The aroma is sweet and malty. The taste is very sweet, malty and smokey. The mouth feel is syrupy and sticky.

Smooth pour with a nice frothy head that lingered for a little while. The amber color is quite nice looking. This definitely brings through the caramel and lightly toasted malt. It’s delicately balance overall and the feel of it is very creamy. I really enjoyed their take of this Scottish style ale. Each drink is just a sensation balance of flavor and creaminess. I can see why it won an award.

Edit 12/18/21:
This has aged nicely. The sweetness has faded some while dark bready malts have come forward and the smoke is more noticeable. Worth an add .25 to taste & overall.

12/29/19:
L: same brown color as the bottle with a light reddish/tan, quickly dissolving head

S: very little aroma. some faint grass and molasses

T: mild smoke, sweet molasses, damp grass, raisins, dark bread. The smoke becomes more prominent as the beer warms, but still plays a supporting role.

F: mild carbonation fills your mouth and leaves a moderate bitter-sweet aftertaste

O: a pretty good Scotch Ale. The flavors are well balanced, but IMO it could use a little more smoke. Sprecher Scotch is a very good example of the style, albeit on the sweet side, and, if I lived near Glendale, WI it would definitely be in my rotation.

From notes 5/29/13: Pours an opaque dark amber-light brown that soon clears, producing 1/5 fingers of short-lived, foamy, light tan head that leaves small motes, swirls and patches of thin lace. Aroma is roast and caramel malt, peat and wood smoke, butter, thin chocolate and a musty yeast note. Taste is roasted malt, caramel, butter, peat and meaty smoke, alcohol and pepper spice with a hint of raisin. Finish is lively pepper spice that becomes a lightly bitter, malty, smoky, spice in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, acidic and lively with carbonation and spice. A Wee-Heavy so "heavy" on the smoke it reminds one of a Rauchbier, so much so that I might have missed this one on a blind taste test for style identification. I like it!

A: The beer is hazy amber brown in color. It poured with a quarter finger high dense beige colored head that left a large patch of bubbles on the surface and a thick collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of smoked peat are present in the nose along with hints of toffee; the smell becomes stronger as the beer warms up.
T: The taste follows the smell and has smoky flavors of peat with underlying notes of pale and toffee-like malts. There is a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and slightly thin on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I enjoyed the aromas and flavors of peat in this beer, which seemed to be a lot easier to drink compared to other beers in the style given its lighter body.

Unknown vintage; drank 12/21/14 @ the Yarchives.

Brown/orange hue.

Big off-white head; frothy lace.

Peat, caramel & plum notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Smoky peat, caramel & mild plum flavors; an Islay scotch ale, then?

A smoky treat.
