Misc.: Reviewed as an IPA, but Amber/American Red Ale was another option

Not particularly looking forward to this one for some reason. I mean Ninkasi is perfectly fine, but just bought this because I hadn’t reviewed it yet. Here’s to meh…

Poured a honey, orange, semi-clear color with three fingers of frothy, white head. Pretty funky underneath the head, mostly looking like standing pulp and a few bubble streams. Very good spideweb foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Good retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 4.25)

Wow, pretty interesting nose. Getting artificial lemon iced tea, passion fruit, rye, lemon zest, peach, red apple, caramel malts, papaya, pineapple and other tropical notes. (Smell - 3.75)

Taste was pretty close to the nose, getting that artificial lemon iced tea mix up front. Also rye, red apple, tropical hops, mango, stone fruit, lemon zest and earthy grassy hops. Alcohol is very well hidden. (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish. (Feel - 4.50)

This was not a bad beer at all. Hard to really classify this as something specific. I think a Red IPA or an Amber IPA would work. Either way, pretty decent. (Overall - 3.75)

A: clear medium amber ale, a fat finger or so of ivory foam left some lace down the glass while I drank

S: herbal and floral, with suggestions of grain sweetness, perhaps some citrus fruit and honey

T: pleasant mix of grains like bread and biscuit, lightly done and slightly sweet, and fruitier characteristics of fruits with some pine resin chew

M: medium-light, moderate carbonation, slick and slim-feeling; smooth with a mild bitterness

O: a nice amber ale, IPA-styled with a good hop representation. Enjoyable and recommended to fans of red and amber ales; worth checking out for IPA fans, too.

This pours a malty amber with decent foam. Caramel like malt notes on the nose, some candied orange, light bitterness. Might be faded, no dating visible on the bottle.

APPEARANCE: For a perfectly copper colored beer, this is about as transparent as it can get. There is not a trace of sediment or haze, just crystal clarity. The head is stark white and the full finger and a half of it last for about 45 seconds. Once it settles, the cap creates a ring around the edges with a nearly flat, but very thin, white coverage of the surface. It almost looks like a white, foamy pizza. The lacing is foamy with about 80% of the back of the glass covered. One of the prettiest beers I've seen.

SMELL: Gorgeous pine aromas hit the nose first and they’re surrounded by light citrus and a touch of grass. Hints of brown sugary malt and some floral smells also creep in, but they are very subtle and only serve to round out the nose. Would be perfect, but not nearly enough intensity.

TASTE: All of the big citrus and floral notes from an IPA are here, but there is absolutely none of the harshness, instead there is a subtle wash of slightly sweet malts that takes its place and balances this beer perfectly. Again, I’m getting a touch of brown sugar here along with caramel, pine, tangerine, grass and grapefruit.

MOUTHFEEL: Perfect balance for this beer with the dial landing just barely on the sweet side of the spectrum. There is just enough bitter bite to make this worthy of the “India-style” tag, but easy enough for non-IPA drinkers. Medium body, mild tickle and velvety mouthfeel.

OVERALL: This is an ideal gateway beer for those looking to convert a newbie Craft Beer drinker to the hoppy side. But it can also be fully appreciated by hop heads as what it is, a phenomenal example of a hoppy red beer with a little more malt and balance than usual.

22oz : SN IPA Glass

Pours a clear, coppery red with a thick, foamy off white head.

Malty, toffee, biscuit, bready notes well balanced by tropical, fruity, floral hops.

Medium body, foamy carbonation.

Certainly more malt balanced than an IPA, though with still a sufficient, tasty hoppy balance.

Had this on tap at Red Star in Exton, Pennsylvania. The flavor has a touch of orange citrus and tart apple along with notes of caramel. It has a nice touch of floral hop to give it a dry finish. Definitely an in-between beer - between a red and IPA. Very enjoyable.
