Crisp, Clean, Herbal, Bready

Part of Ninkasi’s Prismatic Lager Series, the German-style Helles pours pale golden, lively, and boasts frothy foam head. Malty, bready, grainy nose, with some light floral and herbal. Smooth, creamy, surprisingly lush, but also crisp. Herbal hops, citrus rind bite, sweet, bready, toasty, biscuity, and cereal grains. A solid example of the style, and extremely poundable. Would love to see this as a year-round beer, and look forward to more from this lager series.

Can Ninkasi replicate a Munich Helles? If you don't care, press the back button on your internet search engine. If you do care, continue reading:

The beer looks pale yellow in color with lots of lovely bubbles unashamed of showing themselves. Topping it is a white head which sits for a while at over half-inch thickness. Its aroma is tame, however replicate per style. Hay, somewhat sweet, a little note of grass. All is fine so far.

Although there is a wee note of cooked veggies, I'd say that Lux could give Munich a run at its helles. The beer is straightforward, with hay and a doughy sweetness. Its light body and easy drinking ability helps Lux stand out from the common high-hopped IPA.

(Served in a bow-tie)
A- This beer pours a crystal clear yellow body with a gentle carbonation working to the surface. There was a snow white head that sticks to the glass with each sip, slowly making some nice lace before sliding back onto the beer.

S- The slightly sulfury aroma has some dried leaves/ lagered malt aromas in the clean finish.

T- The nice crisp pale hop flavor had some pils malt underneath with a touch of sweetness and flint in the finish.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with a slight slippery fizz texture in the finish.

O- This beer has a nice crisp smooth well lagered flavor that is easy to drink but has some nice subtle hops and malts that keeps me sipping.

Poured a gorgeous clear golden body with a one finger white head that quickly receded to a cap of lace. The perfect appearance for the style. Scents of sweet Pilsner malt, light levels of floral and slightly herbal hops and a light touch of sulphur and honey. Overall impression of aroma is of a very true to style Munich Helles, light, malty and clean. Quite nice. Flavor begins lightly sweet and malty, with notes of honey and Pilsner malt lending a light sugar cookie-like flavor. Light levels of floral and herbal Hallertau hops come through. Middle continues to be lightly sweet with the same malty flavors, but picks up more hop flavors to balance, with the floral and herbal character shining through. Finish is balanced between sweet and grainy malt flavors and floral and herbal Hallertau hops, with medium-light bitterness. Aftertaste is lightly bitter with notes of floral and herbal hops and grainy malt. Overall impression of flavor is of a nicely balanced, crisp, clean Munich Helles lager. Quite true to style and very pleasing. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a smooth malty feel. Overall impression of mouthfeel is of a very drinkable beer, hitting the style guidelines exactly. Overall this is an excellent Munich Helles lager. It is very true to form in all respects and is a well executed, balanced beer.

16oz glass at the Edmonton Oliver location of Beer Revolution.

This beer appears a glassy, medium golden yellow colour, with one anemic finger of plainly foamy and bubbly dirty white head, which leaves a few minor specks of baby pom-pom lace in spots around the glass as it quickly dissolves.

It smells of bready, crackery, and doughy pale malt, weak apple and pear fruity notes, a touch of astringent yeast, and tame floral, earthy, and leafy hops. The taste is more grainy, bready, and semi-sweet pale malt, the caramel equation never really resolving, the same understated drupe fruit character from the aroma, a touch of old-school gasohol, and plain earthy, leafy and weedy noble hops.

The bubbles are quite tame and easy to accommodate, the body an adequate medium weight, and smooth enough - if you're expecting a tussle, then these are not the hops you're looking for. It finishes off-dry, and off the charts as far as its slavish ode to Bavarian lager tradition goes.

While not the headiest of examples of this venerable style, it does well to emulate the best in class of all those tall boys that predominate liquor stores everywhere, and maybe even edge a nose or two above at times. Worth checking out, if this is your particular thing.

Beautiful, clean lager. Fits my taste better than Weihenstephaner and other helles I have tried.

Mighty fine helles lager with a noticeable noble hop presence atop a well built bready malt base. Clean and satisfying, this is a standby American-made helles.

I poured this into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a nice light golden yellow with carbonation rising at a decent pace filling into a nice one and a half finger white foamy head. This head ends up dissipating within less than a minute and provides a lacing that strings itself all over the sides of the glass. The smell had a nice setting of German pilsner malts coming forth in a slightly nice crisp sweet sort of way. The taste was crisp and sweet just like a Munich Helles lager should be. There is no aftertaste but ends up leaving a crisp dry sweet finish. On the palate, it sat pretty light and once again a nice crispness settles over my mouth and tongue. This had a pretty nice sessionable aspect to it. Overall, in my opinion, this was a good beer for its style. Sure, its nothing over the top but then again, how does any brewery put a Munich Helles lager over the top?

Clear golden color with one plus finger of white head. Some lacing as the head falls.
Smell is lightly sweet with no off putting smells.
Taste is white bread crust malts with a light backing of noble grassy hops. Some honey like sweetness lingers in the aftertaste.
The mouthfeel is close to medium and well carbonated. Finish is crisp and refreshing.
The hop bitterness tends to build slightly as it is consumed.
Nice easy drinking lager. I enjoyed this beer.
