Style: Altbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Called 'Dark Double Alt' on the label.

Seize the season with Sleigh'r. Layers of deeply toasted malt are balanced by just enough hop bitterness to make it deceivingly drinkable. Paired with a dry finish, Sleigh’r is anything but your typical winter brew.

An Alt ferments with Ale yeast at colder lagering temperatures. This effect gives Alts a more refined, crisp lager-like flavor than traditional ales. The Alt has been “Ninkasified” raising the ABV and IBUs. Sleigh'r has a deep, toasted malt flavor that finishes dry and balanced.

This is a nice Altbier and winter warmer. Don't have too much experience with the Altbier style to gauge this off, but has a good ABV for the style. It almost has a Black and Tan feel with that lager and dark ale mix. Get a lot of toasted maltiness, good balance of hops, a little chocolate. This is an absolute must if you ever see on nitro tap. Had at The Tanker in Portland years ago and it was outstanding. I always look forward to seeing this appear in the beer aisle. Ninkasi has some great offerings and their metal tributes on their beer labels is killer - AC/DC, Iron Maiden and of course SLAYER!

This seasonal release poured a nice dark brown. It's nose was a slight nuttiness with a hint of molasses. Strong coffee flavour with some caramel in the mouth as well as some hoppiness that wasn't very prevalent on the nose.

Darker ruby amber, good clarity through a light. No head and small cling lace around rim.

S - Malty bread style with some slight spices of nutmeg or Cinnamon, with some sweet stuff back in there somewhere. Took some effort to smell though with a good swoosh of the glass.

T - More of a tasty malty beer, mixed with some raisin, brown sugar, a bit woodsiness from the hops... maybe Chinook? A little nutty, a lil spicy but not much at all. Pretty balanced flavor though, not overly anything but definitely rich. A little bit of smoked wood?

M - Medium to lower carb, not dry and not too resinous but has a big aftertaste of wood or earthy spice?

O - Overall this was an interesting beer, almost reminds me of some Chinook hopped beers, but I could be wrong. Good if you like malty beers and some aftertaste, not too hoppy. Not sure of this thing though, it kinda confuses me.... But good beer.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a clear pint glass. No freshness dating evident. Purchased for $3.79 at local regional grocer.

A-Pours a dark amber hue with a one and a half finger, light tan head. Modest retention with good lacing.

S-Caramel malt aroma with dark fruits, and some piney and citric hops. Pleasant.

T-Toasted caramel and chocolate malts with fruitcake type fruit and spice flavors.

M-Very smooth and balanced.

D-This is a very drinkable winter seasonal since it has a lot of flavor but is not filling. 7.2% ABV is masked very well. Competitively priced bomber at $3.79 to $3.99 but would be better if available in sixers of 12 oz. bottles.

To me this drinks more like a strong ale than an alt. Really enjoyable and the malty sweetness and slight hoppiness paired very well with the halibut I had it with. I've gotten out of the habit of buying Ninkasi, but this was leftover from a six pack that my son in law had bought, so I'm glad he left it! I'd definitely buy this once in a while during the winter season.

Hasn't been many reviews lately and the label states first time ever bottled, so i can only assume I've been sitting on this bottle for about 9 months. I can't remember when or how I got this, but it has definitely been stored properly.

Poured a dark brown with an amber tint, a little light comes through but nearly zero. 1/2 finger head that sits a little creamy leaving behind decent lacing.

Initial nose sheds a cookie like smell. I cant pinpoint what kind. Choc Chip or Oatmeal is what I'm leaning towards. Chocolate Chip Oatmeal? Some burnt dark fruit is on hand as well. Coffee is present as well.

Mouthfeel is smooth with a medium carbonation. I likey.

Taste is similar to the nose. First thing that comes to mind is part ale, part stout. Malts are easily detectable and are in the forefront, but the hops are not left out and are nicely represented.

Solid brew. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I am.

Worth checking out.

Picked up a bomber from Total Wine in late October for $4.99. Bottled on 10-3-2014.

Beer poured brown with a nice off white head that is leaving some lacing behind.

Nose is malty, some hints of toasted grains.

Taste is bold but very well balanced. Sweet toasted malts are balanced nicely by citrus and floral hops.

Mouthfeel is medium to full and smooth.

Overall this is a nice seasonal. Unfortunately I did not see that this comes in a sixer format. Will definitely pick up a sixer for next year!

Thanks to sirdrinknp. 22oz bottle poured into an imperial pint glass.

Pours a murky, rust brown color with deep amber hues at the edges and bottom of the glass. A nice, creamy looking off white head reaches about a finger in height and then slowly recedes to a foamy cap. Thick foam is left on the glass with each sip. Sometimes a murky, darker colored beer can be unappealing but that's not the case here.

Huge malt nose. Roasty and nutty at the same time and in almost equal parts. It really doesn't smell sweet at all, which is surprising considering the amount of malt that is here. Zero hop character is detected at all.

The taste has more going on than the nose. Again it's pretty much all malt. Nice caramel and toffee notes come across first and provide a decent amount of sweetness, none of which was in the nose. Not as roasty as in the nose but there is a slight nutty character as well. There is a touch of earthy bitterness too.

Medium body with medium carbonation. Surprising that the body doesn't feel fuller or heavier with the huge malt character, which is pretty impressive.

This is a nice take on the style. A pretty straightforward take with some nice simple flavors and aromas but it's done well and works well.
