On tap at crafted yesterday. Black pour with a long-lasting tan head. Roasty, chocolatey, gun metal, wet river rock, lightly sweet, lightly bitter. Good porter.

16oz glass at the brewpub in downtown Sandpoint. A strange thing to order on a day like today, but hey, it's nice and cool in here, the bar is slow going and friendly, and hey - I've had my fill of the lighter and fruit beer offerings of late.

This beer appears a clear (I think) dark brownish black, with a thin cap of wispy and bubbly beige head, which leaves some awesome swollen raincloud lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of toasted caramel malt, bittersweet cafe-au-lait, black licorice, a bit of wet ash, and leafy, weedy, and earthy hops. The taste is gritty caramel malt, day old coffee, anise candies, cocoa powder, damp cigarettes, a twinge of sour milk, and plain leafy weedy hops.

The carbonation is very light and genial in its probing frothiness, the body a solid medium-heavy weight, and rather smooth, with an attendant nascent creaminess. It finishes well off-dry, the chocolate, coffee, and caramel weeding out the pretenders.

A pleasantly rendered version of the style, one which tends more towards the old world, than the American. Lots going on, and easy enough to put back once my core body temperature has settled back to the norm after braving the near 100 degree temperatures out there today.

Enjoyed on on Tap at the brew pub. Poured a a dark mahogany brown with hues of ruby half a finger of a dark white head that fades quickly with little lacing.

Aroma of espresso, dark malts and chocolate.

Taste followed the nose with a nice coffee dark malt bitterness followed by a nice balanced slightly sweet chocolate and a little smoke at the end.

Mouth Feel was medium body, mild carbonation, creamy smooth and very well balanced.

Overall a very nice enjoyable porter, a great surprise in the northern Idaho.

On draught at the brewpub, served in a shaker pint, Knot Tree is black with an off-white head that leaves scattered lace

Smell is good, it's got a deep, pure milk chocolate nose.

Taste is similar, very pure porter, exceptionally tasty. These guys do a great job of getting sweet malt flavors but keeping the beers balanced and not overly sugary or syrupy. Mostly chocolate, with no roast, but just the right amount of acrid char on the finish.

Mouthfeel is on the lighter, a hint of dry.

Drinkability is high. Super tasty and quaffable.

Pint at the brewpub in Sandpoint, Idaho.
Pours dark brown with ruby red highlights, and a creamy brown foam. Good head retention leaving thin lace. Aroma of rich roasted malts and bit of coffee. Taste has lots of dark chocolate malts, leaving a charred and smoky aftertaste. Creamy, smooth, and just enough sweetness to keep things in check. Medium towards full mouthfeel, smooth carbonation. A great pick at $3.50 a pint.
