33cl bottle from the LCBO. Never heard of this brew before, nor did I have any idea what was inside of the bottle (label's all in swedish)

Poured into a goblet. Chestnut-black in colour, 1/4 inch of head that receded into a thick ring that lasted throughout what has ended up being a slow sipping session.

Nose is quite rich and pleasant - roasted malt, sweet molasses, chocolate, cherry, orange peel, chocolate loaf. Bit of coffee in there as well.

Tasty stout, though a bit thinner than I'd expected for a Russian Stout. Felt more like a porter, to be honest, but at the very least it's a damned tasty one. Rich boozy malt, cinnamon, coffee, chocolate, and a long finish that reminds me of chocolate cookies (to be honest, the exact taste I get is Rice Krispies with nutella, which I don't know if the brewer was exactly going for, but if he did - kudos to him!). Nice enjoyable sipper on a cold December evening.

Thinner bodied, sticky, initially with a strong carbonation, but a few minutes of warmth and air cleared that out a bit.

Great first brew from Sigtuna - hope to see them back at the LCBO with something new in the near future. I'm sure I'll snap up a few more of these to get me through the rest of the Vinter!

Enojoyed late february in bottle purchased from local LCBO. Pours dark brown with slight amber hue and minimal head which quickly dissipates after first sip. Hints of wild berries and chocolate in aroma and the slightest touch of smoke. Inviting feeling begging for another sip to truly uncover what this beer has to offer and quickly warms the recipient on delivery.

Overall an enjoyable beer but could have more pronounced characters for distinction

Purchased at the LCBO for $3.30 for a 330ml bottle. Served at 10deg C in pint glass

A- Pretty good. Opened well. Poured with a TON of head for a stout

S- Pretty good. Caramel, roasted malt and chocolate.

T- Not too bad. Nothing to wait on

M- Excellent! This beer's saving grace.

O- Not bad. Won't benefit from more aging so I have one more for the spring to drink!

Food Pairing

This ok stout paired well with... Lamb shank and root vegetables in a reduced red wine sauce.

Cheers Sammy!!
Pours dark brown with a thin, dark-khaki head. Smells of dark chocolate and dark fruits, maybe a little coffee. Dark fruits are quit pronounced in the flavour, some decent sweetness to compliment the fruits but that all fades to a dry chocolate and roasty malt finish. Pretty full body, medium-low carbonation. Solid stuff from a brewery I haven't had the pleasure of sampling yet.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a nice dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt with some black chocolate notes is quite pleasant. Taste is also dominated by some roasted malt with light dry coffee notes and some black chocolate notes. Body is quite full with nice creamy texture and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Easily drinkable for the style with just enough complexity to be interesting.

Best before 2017.

Pours a motor oil color, head is small though. Taste is very ashy with anise and harsh. Very uneven with not much flavor depth. Better at room temp but a miss for an RIS.

A: Black, mostly opaque, a little ruby tinge when held to the light, 3 fingers of tan head and nice random lacing.

S: Chocolate, licorice, cherries, pear, hazelnuts, nuttiness, walnuts, dark toasted notes, a little wood smoke.

T: Licorice, dark chocolate, cherries and pears, walnuts. Slightly bitter aftertaste.

M: Thick bready and syrupy body with medium low carbonation and a smooth finish.

O: A good Russian Imperial Stout from Sweden, and a cool bottle to boot with the bear paw. Interesting nuttiness for this style.

May have to try this one again, but, found it slightly disappointing. That said, still a good offering.

330 mL bottle from the LCBO; best before Dec. 17 2014. I believe this is my first Swedish beer review, and I'd just like to add that it's nice to not tick a new country with yet another industrial-style pale lager. Served at cellar temperature, and poured into a tulip.

Pours pitch-black with a few reddish-brown highlights, with two fingers of puffy, creamy, beige-coloured head exploding from the surface. It takes more than five minutes to recede into a dense cap, while coating the glass in a smooth sheet of lovely lacing. Nice aroma, but nothing especially noteworthy given the style - molasses and butterscotch sweetness, baker's chocolate, roasted coffee and a light whiff of smoke are detectable, in addition to some hints of raisin and fruitcake.

Much more of a roasty, bitter flavour than the aroma let on, but I'm good with that. Caramel and molasses sweetness soon give way to roasted malts, dark chocolate and raisins. Light smoke and charred wood come through toward the finish, with some very slight ethanol warmth interacting with this bitter, roasted flavour nicely. Bittersweet aftertaste that lingers on the palate. Full-bodied, with delicate, restrained carbonation that lightly agitates the tongue. The mouthfeel is very smooth and almost silky; this stuff is a pleasure to drink.

Final Grade: 4.25, an impressive A-. Sigtuna Midvinterblot may not be the best RIS I've had so far, but it's still a great one that, in the future, I'll be keeping my eye out for. This is a bold-flavoured stout that manages to remain balanced and impressively drinkable considering the style. A solid introduction to the Swedish craft beer scene, and a very respectable selection for my 550th review. Skål!

The beer is dark dark brown, a high brown head, good lacing and good curtains.

Very much roasted malt in the smell, burnt bread, dark roasted coffee beans, dark dried sweet fruits.

Starting very sweet, dark syrup, figs, raisins, marmalade, dark coffee, chocolate and bitter orange peel.

Little carbonation, sticky and oily, a heavy body, a very dry finish.

This year it was even better, and at lower ABV.
