I was unimpressed with this brew. It had a fairly standard look to it but the beer felt kind of thin and the flavor was mostly astringent with none of the positives I usually experience in an ipa. Very little malt, lots of round bitter but no sharpness, very little hop flavor and not much on the nose. There is no bottle dating to work with so it is possible that this was an old and abused bottle. However, as it stood the beer was not worth the effort in getting it.

Nice amber color with a very thick white head. Also the lable is cool....which lets be honest does improve a beer.

Aroma is Hops very nice piny and hop filled aroma a hint of caramel malt but only a hint

Carbonation is upfront and slowly dissipates to reveal a hop bitterness that for a hop is just perfect. It slowly presents a maltyness but it is mostly piny earthy hop flavor

Bottle via trade with GCurlow – much obliged!

Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a white head that leaves decent lacing.

Smells of grainy pale malts with good amounts of light pine hops, backed by heavier earthy hop aromas.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Slightly dry pale malts up front are joined quickly by earthy hops that turn the flavor profile more bitter. Midway through slight amounts of herbal and pine hops come into play, carrying through to a moderately bitter ending. Mouthfeel is good, with solid carbonation.

Overall nothing stood out about this beer; it could almost be passed off as a light amber. Not worth turning down if offered but certainly not worth seeking.

(Served in an American pint glass)

A- This beer has a hazy orange copper body with an off-white mousy head that last a good bit with a strong carbonation seen at the base of the glass.

S- The pungent smell of green hops has an earthy green weed note to it. There are no real notes of malt in the smell but they could be buried by the hops.

T- The light taste of lightly toasted malt and biscuit malt finish with a hint of tartness that is quickly covered by a orange musty hop bitterness. The green hop bitterness lingers for a short bit after each sip.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a tight fizz at the finish that helps the bitterness of the hops.

D- The beer has a nice strong bitterness and although there is some orange notes it is not overpowering. However I don’t think I would want much more orange flavor without other hop flavors. This beer is not bad.

Aggressive head right out of the bottle. Despite multiple attempts and several bottles I can't get this beer to pour without a 50/50 ratio of liquid to foamy cap. The beer is copper in color, mostly clear with tons of bubbles streaming through. The head again is very full and the color of fresh cut pine.

The nose starts out with a stale hop scent followed by a semi sweet toasted grain flavor. The smell isn't a breath of fresh air but it isn't all bad either. What I will say for sure is that nothing about the look or the smell makes me want to drink this.

Taste is boringly average as well. The flavor is muted and stale like the nose and there isn't anything interesting calling out to me. Slight hints of citrus and pine are about it for a hop presence. All in all a poor ipa.

The mouthfeel is the only thing solid here, with a firm bitterness and a smooth sweet finish. Not a truly bad beer but one I won't be buying again.

A - Cloudy reddish orange with turbid chunks...tons and tons of little floaty chunks! This wicked brew is topped with a big creamy, frothy, three finger head. Lots of sticky lace is left on the glass. Outstanding appearance!

S - Green grassy hops jump out of the glass before I stick my nose in it. Fruity and floral, but mainly piney and grassy. Very fresh hop aroma. Way back in the back, there are some balancing biscuity malts.

T - Nice mild hop-forward profile. Honestly not as hoppy or strong as I was expecting based on the nose. Very fresh and green with a huge bitter bite on the finish. Lingering aftertaste of freshly mowed grass and pine needles. The hops are big and fresh, but not so overpowering that you couldn't easily session this. It's bitterness is pretty well balanced with a good dose of sweetness too.

M - Full bodied but extremely quenching. Smooth mellow carbonation feels creamy, then a big hop bitterness comes and wipes it all away like an after dinner moist towelette at a BBQ joint.

D - I've never heard of Barley Island until I picked up several of their offerings in a mix-a-six pack, and based on this, my first experience with the brewery, they are doing a damn fine job. This is fresh, tasty, not extremely complex, but eminently drinkable. This is a kick ass session IPA!

Attractive semi-transparent amber, with an off-tan head. Medium single-finger lacing.

Aroma is a lovely bouquet of pine hoppy goodness. Delightful.

Taste is surprisingly sweet and malty up front, with a pine resin followthrough. Finishes with more maltiness. Though this isn't a bad IPA, it could stand to be a bit more heavily hopped. Still, an easily-sessionable and enjoyable IPA.

There's some big flavors here, they may not be the best possible, but they're bold and you know what's going on here. The malts focuses on dry biscuits while the hops come in with tangy, grassy hops. Unfortunately, this beer doesn't sit well on my tongue, I think it's too dry and astringent. This could just be a beer that isn't for me,

Poured a hazy golden orange with a huge pillowy white head. Great Lacing.

Has a very nice fresh bread, and toasty malt odor with a bit of floral hops.

A very balanced IPA with a great toasted malt body and a clean lightly piney and floral hop finish.

Mouthfeel is slightly slick with a crisp dry finish.

An easy to drink lighter more balanced IPA with much less hops than most American version, compares more favorable to good English versions.

Pours a dark golden with a slight amber hue.

Caramel and toasted malt sweetness with a hint of earthy hops.

Definitely malt forward caramel sweetness and a light hand of earthy hop bitterness.

Light-bodied, medium carbonation.

Overall, I was very unimpressed with this lackluster IPA.

It is amazing what the serving style can do for a beer. I've had barfly before on tap and in the bottle and it certainly isn't a bad beer, but it really isn't anything special. That changes dramatically when it is served on cask. The hops take on a brilliant marijuana presence that is beautifully complimented by some light grapefruit and a nice solid, if unremarkable malt base. The finished product is far more than the sum of its parts, a beautiful drinking experience. Really guys, try it on cask, it is a whole 'nother animal.

When I was pouring this I was wondering if it was unfiltered or not. Figured it out too late. We are not talking about particulate matter floating around. It is huge chunks of yeast bubbling through the brew. It looks disgusting. I'm not drinking this I thought but I continued on anyway. Otherwise it is a golden brew with a one-fingered head that goes away quickly and leaves just spotty lacing.

The smell is grassy and yeasty.

The taste is of an IPA but it is on the subdued part of hoppiness on the IPA scale. The taste is of grass and a little bit of pine aftertaste.
It is well carbonated for the style and medium bodied. It is just hard for me to get past the unfiltered aspect of this beer.

No bottled on date to be found. Enjoyed on 02/28/11.

A - Cloudy light orange/amber color. A pretty aggressive pour yields a good looking two finger white head. Leaves excellent lacing.

S - Some light toasted malts, some crisp citrus hops. Pretty good aroma on this one.

T - Quite bitter up front. Big citrusy hops but it has a somewhat orangey flavor that I'm not the biggest fan of. Somewhat astringent. Finish is nice and dry with a good crisp bitterness at the end.

M/D - Mouthfeel is good. Medium with nice prickly carbonation. Drinkability is pretty low because it just doesn't leave me wanting another sip.

A pretty good beer here but today there are too many great IPAs for this one to stand out.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle to a pin glass, The liquid is a cloudy orange. The head is two fingers white and leaves good lace.

The smell is pine tar. thick heavy hops no malt.

The taste follows, failing to deliver any balance to a huge hoppy presents that is strong deep and bitter in a one dimensional way.

The Mouthfeel is nice, very good, better them medium body. and good carbonation.

The drinkability is ok. not bad but not some thing I will go out and try to find more of. Lots of Thanks to JPM30 for this brew. MK

Had this at the Barley Island Brewpub.

Appearance: Poured beautifully by the local bartender with an inch of head which took a minute or so to die down.

Smell: Obviously a lot of dry hopping in this one, as it smells like opening a bag of hops and smelling them, grapefruit and grass.

Taste: Citrusy up front, with a touch of malt in the middle followed by a long grassy finish. Very refreshing.

Mouthfeel: As goldilocks said "This one's just right" Not too thin, and not chewy, but a silky mouthfeel.

drinkability: As I was finishing my beer I was asking about a growler of it to take home with me. This could be a staple in my fridge very soon.
