A: poured into a stange to a clear and bright yellow topped by a two finger fluffy white head
S: smells of clean pale malts, some grape like aromas and a slight spicy noble hop on the nose
T: taste is clean pale malts, a lot of grape flavors and a slight spicy hop note. swallow is spicy hops more grape and some lingering clean maltyness
M: fairly light and crisp on the palate with slightly prickly carbonation and a slightly drying finish
O: really good for what it is. nice and bright flavors with a solid mouthfeel. definitely a tasty beer on the lighter side of the scale. No apparent faults in my mind. I got this one from somebody that just came back from Germany so it's probably pretty fresh compared to a lot of shelf stock.

I first had Fruh in Koln, my German hosts who lived there recommended it highly on the hot summer day. They drank it half/half with Fanta orange soda and while I took a sip that way, I preferred mine regular. Poured in a Koln style glass, I found it very refreshing, more like a lager than a pale ale. Look was super clear in the glass with a small head, light hop flavor. Very tasty. I have a 6-pac waiting in my fridge for summer. It's almost impossible to find in the US, luckily I have it hand delivered by my friends every year. If you are ever where this is available, you must give it a try.

Taste is crisp, clean balanced, with notes of crackers. Grainy yet clean nose. Bright gold and crystal clear with a white head of delicate lace on glass. Medium lite body. Kolsch as it should be.

Poured from the bottle into a Gaffel stange glass. Really excited to be trying another German true Kolsch and suddenly finding this in my area.

Lots of head on the pour, but it settles to a nice frothy white, the pinhead bubbles are just so even throughout, rocking and just coating with lace at times. Head is a classic super crystal golden lemon yellow, with a mix of different sized carbonation, some is very tiny, others are cola sized. Also some rise very slowly others rise incredibly fast, a mish mash of a lifting science experiment. An absolutely lovely beer.

Nose is classic. Dry malts and sweet bakery bread sense. Slight honey. Hints at mud and grass with some density. Solid. Thick. Inviting.

Taste is dense as well. Thick big malt backbone that just rips. Coating. Lush. Hints at honey sweetness coming with some lip coating feel. Big doughy bread aftertaste with a sense of crisp lager like finish (yes I know... it's an ale...). Mouthfeel is solid, fairly straightforward with minimal carbonation play on the palate.

Overall a real great simple drinking Kolsch, the ultimate Kolsch quest continues in earnest. I would love to try this side by side with Reissdorf, but I could have this VERY often!

appearance: Vigorous bubbles soon dissipate into a weak head golden color has a hint of orange that gives it a nice character

smell: Rich and dynamic loving it. Some Rhein fruits mixed with the light hops with some nice malted barely on the sides

taste: BAM!!! Wow what a rich flavor. Such a difference from other bland hoppy beers that think hops make up for good flavor. Just a dynamic marrying of sweet and bitter with the fruits on the edges.

mouthfeel: Full for its light color. A joy because it tastes like more than it looks or usually smells. Really a joy to taste

overall: Great Cologne brew, a true bench mark of the marker and the style happy to have

Golden and pale with a thin white head that hardly gives any lace and the most lively and mobile carbonation I have ever seen.

A fruity or juicy sweetness hits the nose, backed by a strong bottom of grainy malts, and finished off by a spicy, musty hop note and a small whiff of yeast. Very inviting.

A bit more hop-character to the flavor and a fairly clean and dry finish. Very juicy and fruity (and slightly salty) again too. A very firm yet delicate taste that covers it all.

Mouthfeel is kind of hard and very crisp. Quite easy and a joy to drink.

More or less like a good Helles, but with much more carbonation and hoppiness and saltier as well.

500 ml bottle poured into a pint glass

A- A clear golden yellow with a two finger white head.

S- Good bread, touch of grapes, floral and slightly earthy hops, some Pilsner malts.

T- Sweet bread, hints of light fruits and grapes, touch of honey, hops are floral.

M- Smooth, light to medium body.

O- A tasty Kölsch that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in the style. Nose is more balanced than the taste which is very malt forward. Very easy to drink

Bottle poured into a glass beer boot

Clear, yellow with strands of carbonation leading to a one finger foam cap that quickly subides. Few lacings

Grassy, malt, bread and grains with a whisper if lemon aroma.

Clean, crisp, refreshing malts and no bitter aftertaste. A light mouthfeel.perfect beer for a hot summer day. Love this style of beer. Worthy of repeating and stocking in the fridge.

Appeance: pale yellow, bordering on green, with a firm 1/2" collar of foam.
Aroma: fresh, light, delicately hoppy, rather minor in size, but with appreciable fruity notes, which continue on the palate, once the tasting begins.
Light, but lively, happy, with a tangible tangy, citric fruit flavor, and perhaps a touch of apple or pear.
After so many American interpretations, it's great to taste a true kolsch and know once and for all how they should taste. This is a classic, extremely downable, light in body, but with just enough flavor, sweet and lemony, to be worthwhile, and to have me wish this 500 ml bottle would never empty.
Thanks to my pal Dave for bringing it over to the States for me!

I will cop to the fact that it was the low price point that drew me to this one. I have had Kolsches before and I have had German beers before and frankly, I have enough bottles to keep me busy for some time to come.

From the bottle: "herrlich obergärig cölner hofbräu früh (gorgeous top-fermented Cölner Hofbräuhaus early)". "seit 1904 (since 1904)".

My pour created a finger of fizzy, bone-white head with moderate retention. Color was a button-bright straw-yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4). Stunning! Nose had a grape-y, vinous quality mentioned in the description on this site, slightly tart, kind of sour. Mouthfeel was medium and the taste was of freshly mown hay. It was very malty and the grape aspect was hardly noticeable in the mouth. The finish was unexpectedly dry and here the vinousness returned. This well worth what I paid for it and although not worth actively pursuing, it would be a welcome find on a shelf.

BB 20-10-05. Nice head and beautifull light golden and cristal clear beercolor. Nose is very malty, litle hoppy and quiet estery and overal very fresh and flowery.Taste is good and nice balance between palemalts, yeastester and hopbitterness. Litle salty and thatfor quiet dry too. Good brew that runs exceptionally easy down.

Poured out a bright clear golden color with a bone white head. The nose had some sweetness to it, and fresh grain that you get from the style. The taste echoes the nose, lots of fresh grain, an underlying sweetness, and just a slightly bitter finish. Very well balanced. Has a crisp dry mouthfeel and is made for sessioning.

From the barrel @Früh Am Dom, Köln.
Golden, very clean appearance, with the classic two finger of a white and creamy head. Right kölsch appearance.
In the smell a good herbal hop, very fresh and pleasant.
At the taste, too, a resolute hopping, but at the same time delicate, fresh, grassy.
A quite long bitterness in the aftertaste.
And, as usual, a great drinkability.

A: Pour is clear pale golden with a large whipped-cream-like crystal white head. Slow dissipation leaves nice rich lacings.

S: Dry and mild sour. Yeast and faint spices. Light but complex. Acidic citric fruits; like grapefruits.

T: Very refreshing and light, but still complex in all it’s modesty – very nice example of a Kölsch. Grass and mild malt. Acidic sour. Yeasty. Everything is in mild tones.

M: Medium body and carbonation the same. Aftertaste is a bit longer than usually for this style, bitter and mild sour.

O: This is so easy to drink in high numbers. I really like this modest beer-style and this was a nice example of the style.

A - Light/clear golden color. A bit below average sized white head.

S - Some grain (corn smell) and malt sweetness. Some grassy/floral hops. Also smells of golden fruit.

T - Base is mostly grainy malt, that has a corn sweetness. Then along with that is a lot of golden fruit (apple pear mostly with some lemon). Slight grassy and floral hops, but those are mostly covered by the malt and fruit.

M - Light and refreshing. Good carbonation and fizzy.

D - Refreshing and easy to drink. Fruity flavors make it easy to drink.

Notes: Taste like an above average German pilsner with a good amount of golden fruit. Refreshing and easy to drink.

500 ml bottle was poured into a pilsner glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a nice billowy white head that has reduced to a thin layer. It is a golden straw yellow with great clarity and vision of bubbles coming up though the glass. Looks awesome.

Smell: Bready and sweet pilsner malts followed by grassy Bavarian hops. Pretty standard and traditional smelling.

Taste: Nice chewy and sweet notes from the pilsner malts with some grassy notes and slight bitterness in the rear.

Mouthfeel: Crisp, refreshing, light, chewy, and medium carbonation.

Overall: Never seen this before here and Boston. For a kolsch style from the town it originated in, this beer is traditional and classic. I will be getting more in the future.

0,5 l bottle into a plastic pint after sauna. Beautiful straw color with a two finger white head and effervescent bubbling. Somewhat sweet floral smell with a hint of fresh grass. Crisp taste of grainy malts with notes of apple and grassy hops. Very balanced and drinkable. Medium-light body, medium carbonation. Overall a really pleasant beer after a hot day and sauna. Didn't last long in the pint and left me wanting another.

Picked up in Reno. Pours amazing crystal clear. Smell is very "clean", slightly fruity, very light hops. Taste is smooth, no bite, well balanced, but a little light. I expected more body from this, having homebrewed a couple of Kolsch recepies over the years. Very drinkable, perfect as a with dinner beer (pair with chicken or something light,) Would be good for a hot summer day, but looking for something heavier for the spring snow we had today. Carbonation is light and balanced. Light grain flavors come through, hops are very mild. It needs a little more body imho, but still a very nice beer. Could drink a couple of these easily (maybe a little too easy in the heat).. not that that would be a bad thing.

First time in Cologne so pretty excited about checking out the mythical Kolsh. Kolsch from keg barrel on bar in 0.2L stange glass.
Crystal clear light yellow no carbonation.
A little sweet. Light bitter barley bite. Slightly funky nose. Very mild, quenching, and great for sipping.

Had this beer in a hotel in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse yesterday. Poured in a lokal glass the beer is with a nice carbonation and a white tinteling head.

There is a very low hop taste in the beer which makes it very nice to drink.

Fresh, with some citruslike smells gives the beer a soft and smooth drinkability.

Nothing like a Kolsch to start off the night on a warm spring evening. 1 L bottle, lightly chilled. Clear straw gold, nice stand of white suds that sticks around. Very subtle malt warmth - like whole grain crackers. Hop flavor is also subtle - lemon, white pepper, cut grass. Mild bitterness. Perfect balance. Very fresh.

Drinking Kolsch always reminds me of the one glaring gap in my glass collection - I need a stange.

Served cold from 500ml bottle into straight pilsner mug.

L) Clear, pale gold, very fizzy. Thin bubbly white head. Looks like a very appetising pilsner.

S) Pilsner hops, with a hint of malt sweetness. Quite strong to say it was chilled.

T) Very clean taste, slight pilsner hop bitterness, but with the distinct Kolsch flavour at the back of the mouth. Hard to describe, it is subtle a bit papery (in a good way). Very very slight hint of sweetness.

F) Fizzy and refreshing, with no aftertastes.

O) Quality Kolsch, so easy drinking and clean. To be brutally honest, if you gave me this and told me it was a pilsner I would believe you,

Pint at the Underground.

Pours a pale golden yellow with one finger of white head that leaves amoebic blobs of lace as it recedes.

Smells of grainy pale malt, apple and pear, grape skin, minerals, flowers and cut grass.

Tastes of more crackery malt and orchard fruit, grape skin, faint honey and more floral, grassy hops.

Feels mild and refreshing. Light bodied with gently frothy carbonation. Finishes off-sweet.

Verdict: Highly recommended. Will cool you down.

Enjoyed a bottle brought back from Koln. The label is marked 27.10.10. As expected, this was a tasty and crisp little ale. The aroma has an interested toasted popcorn and grain character with a tiny hint of citrus. The flavor expands on the dry grainy toast with biting orange peel that rolls through a dry finish. Along the way there are also hints of sweet apple (maybe Pink Lady) and fresh raspberries and blueberries. The fruit isn't quite as big as Reissdorf, but it's still all very well balanced. Check out this kolsch classic when you get a chance.

Bright, light gold colored body; thick, foamy, white head. Dry grass aroma; leather; twinge of pear. Lightly toasted grain flavor with a mild estery edge; soda crackers. Light body; somewhat coarse on the palate; dusty and dry mouthfeel.

An excellent, light bodied German ale. It has nice eye appeal and delivers subtle yet complex flavors and aromas.
