pours a rich golden brown with bubbly white head

citrus hoppy aroma, good floral notes, sturdy pine

lemony hops followed by sturdy pine and slight malt, slight flowery notes too

light bodied, smooth yet sturdy hops, good finish with continuing dryness and pine notes

a light bodied ipa, good hops, good finish, wieght is closer to a super hopped pale, but its tasty and the price is good

Picked up a bottle on the way through Columbus OH. Poured on a tulip, probably a little too cold. The beer struggles to fit into the glass because of the immense carbonation and rising froath. Very sturdy, Belgian-like head formation and retention. Laces very well. Color is a orange, copper hue with typical haze from dry-hopped beers. Very good look overall. Aromas bring hits of fruits (peaches, mangos, oranges), then a burst of citrus hops, then a note of plastic phenols in the rear. Flavors bring much the same. The aggressive hop flavor and bitterness demand most of the attention, then giving a not to the estery fruits, and finally the same anoying plastic note found in the nose. The beer, though lightly malty, doesn't give much sweetness-- attenuated very well without any noticable residual sugars. Water chemestry may lead to a hop-emphasis, but also a light sourness and astringency in the mouthfeel. Light contamination may also be a culprit. The beer is very dry, but no real heat or alcohols. Finishes with a strong hop bite and a lingering citrus note.

First beer I've had from this brewery. Poured a slightly cloudy dark golden after absolutely exploding from the bottle. I poured half the beer into a couple of glasses, and the remainder in the bottle kept spewing foam from the top of the bottle the whole time we were drinking the other glasses. Overcarbonated. The smell is slightly smokey and has some slightly sweet malt and citrusy hops. Taste is similar, somewhat smokey up front and then bitter, citrusy hops. Mouthfeel is big, grainy, and malty. Definitely an uneven beer, and given the pressure in the bottle, one I'd be scared to travel with or ship.

The paddle me offers some aggressiveness hops on the label but not freshness date. It pours a cloudy orangish amber color with no foam head at all which leads me to believe not much carbonation.

The aroma was the best part of this because it was a nice floral aroma of the hops.

The taste was real flat and not much going on for an aggressively hopped ipa. Overall I wouldn't have this beer again.

The beer pours a gold color with a towering white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a dry pale malt scent along with a grassy, floral hop aroma. The yeast aroma seems a bit aggressive and the choice of hops is suspect here. The taste is average. It has an overly bitter taste that screams of Goldings hops. It's grassy and one sided with the malt flavor being quite weak and simplistic. The mouthfeel is decent. It is a low/medium bodied beer with a bit too much CO2. This is a drain pour waiting to happen. It's so unbalanced and bitter it's hard to swallow. It's one and done for me.

Appearance: Pours a clear honey color with an overwhelming head that retains well and laces in sheets (although it looks good after the fact, there is too much head)

Smell: Surprisingly little aroma; modest floral hops character

Taste: Starts with a rather dry taste that is joined mid-palate by some of the pithiest grapefruit tartness you will encounter in an IPA; after the swallow, the tongue burst with dry and bitter lime flavor; this is one well-attenuated beer

Mouthfeel: Medium body with surprisingly moderate carbonation; the beer turns your tongue to sandpaper, though

Drinkability: Overall, just not a very drinkable brew

Pours a cloudy medium golden orange with a totally uncontrollable head. Once it melts, it leaves a very nice sticky lace in it's wake.

Aromas are definitely floral hops with only a hint of citrus and something almost smokey. Strange.

Taste follows aromas mostly. Floral hops....some lemon peel and a little grapefruit peel then again something almost smokey that lingers in the aftertaste.
Again, strange.

Mouthfeel is just about right for the style...almost too thick bordering on the mouthfeel of a double IPA. Aftertaste is all citrus peel bitterness that dries nicely on the palette.

Appearance: It pours a nice golden brown color. The head? Wow. The head is out of control. Something's up with the carbonation here. It's over three fingers and I wasn't even pouring that hard. Retention was kind of short and lacing was rather light.

Smell: It's hoppy and certainly citrusy (mostly grapefruit and orange). Hops are of the floral variety. It's bit grainy, grassy, and earthy. Interesting aroma for an IPA.

Taste: This is an interesting IPA. The citrus flavors actually come through very, very lightly. It's hoppy and definitely is bitter. But, the floral hops may have an interest effect in that it tastes a bit grainy and grassy. Frankly, it just tastes kind of bland.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: It's light to medium bodied. It's overly carbonated. It's drinkable, but I'm not a big fan of the taste. Overall, it's interesting and worth a try. But, with so many other superior IPAs on the market, I'm trying to justify why I should drink it again.

This beer is excessively carbonated, producing easily a four-finger thick pale tan colored head despite a careful pour. The head slowly recedes with a rocky, canyoned surface and lots of lacing on the sides of the glass. The beer is hazy, orangish copper color. The aroma is fairly light with soft orange cream notes, touches of pine and a bit of harsh, sharp astringent green hoppiness in the finish (even this is fairly subtle). Dusty malt notes and a dry graininess are also noticeable in the aroma.

Yep the beer is quite carbonated, it foams quite a bit as it hits my mouth. The beer is dry, tart and citrusy; these combine to give this a lemon-like flavor, perhaps more reminiscent of lemon peel. Just a bit fuller than light bodied, with a touch of malt fullness. The beer finishes with a sharp, astringent bitterness that overwhelms the beer a bit.

This beer really needs a bunch more malt character, not necessarily so much that this beer becomes malty, but it needs some malt to support the hop focus that is requisite for an IPA. In the end this seems like it has fermented too much of the malt out.

22oz bomber, not date. The color is coudly honey with an orange hue. The head is slight creamy, receding rather quickly, leavy some big-bubbled lacing.

The aroma is quite different, very sweet and hoppy, strongly floral. The flavor is quite different as well: grainy and several kinds of bitter, slightly mineral-ly and metallic.

The mouth is kind of light, dominated by bitterness and residual sugar stickiness. Don't think I'd recommend more than one in a sitting. I give them props for creativity, but this beer seems a little out of balanced and out of whack.

Golden amber color with a thick spongy head. Grapefruity hop scent. Maybe a little grass there too. Clean citrusy taste with a decent malt background. Hints of caramel. Creamy/oily mouthfeel with lots of carbonation. A decent IPA, but could have been better.

10/19/05- Purchased at John's Marketplace in Portland, OR.

Presentation- 22oz bottle, silk screen printing on the bottle says "extreme". Guess we'll see. No freshness info on the bottle.

Appearance- Clouded orange pour with a smaller 1/2 inch head. Lacing is pretty darn good though. Nice patches everywhere.

Smell- Fairly nice hop scents. Fruity and a bit forest like. Also some mild malt scent.

Taste- The hops come through better as this warms. At first it's really malty with a bitter hop hit. Then as the beer warms the big grapefruit bitterness kicks in. It's bitter, but not to the extreme as it quotes.

Mouthfeel- Average carbonation, semi mouth smacking bitter sensation.

Drinkability- About what I expected. Never believe the hype listed on the label. Overall an IPA with a bit more kick than norm. Average beer, but is drinkable.

Thanks go out to cmaruschak for sharing this with me. Enjoyed this with him and mmmmbeeer.

Appearance: Cloudy orange through the body and fading to yellow, straw-like edges. A crusty white head develops.

Smell: Light hop notes, a touch of malt. Nothing over the top but a nice smell.

Taste: Bittering hops...and that's it. No chance for any other flavors to come through on this one. There is a little of the alcohol note that sneaks in at the end but this is so one dimensionally dominated by hop bitterness that it's hard to appreciate anything else. Shave my tongue! This is all about the hops but not in a good way. It's bordering on a mess.

Mouthfeel: Medium and slightly oily. Very prickly on the palate due to the hop bitterness.

Drinkability: Can't imagine doing this again. This is palate wrecking. It could be good if something else came to play besides the hops. There are better examples to be had out there.

Odd looking tea like orange ruddy hues with a skim coating.

Light aromatic scents of lemon citrous. Weak.

First swigs: Apple juice an lemon juice. Hoo! Lacks balls and malts. Watery IPA. Maybe a bottle sitter???

Thin feel and watered down.

Last swigs: Too much thin hop profile to be a good IPA. Needs improvement.

Lightly dusted orange-amber with a slew of bubbles leaping off the bottom of the glass and creating more head than beer. It's been a while since I've seen this much champagne-like carbonation. The light beige cap has fallen precipitously at the edges, leaving a high altitude, windswept mesa of foam. Crazy squiggles of bubbly lace stick to the glass and add a great deal of visual interest.

The nose is disappointing because it's so hop-deficient. Excuse me, but an IPA without hops is like... uh... well... it's just not very damn good, okay? The beer smells at least as malty as it does hoppy, although neither has really answered the bell. Siletz deserves some slapping around (see below) for denying me a decent IPA aroma.

Paddle Me is more hoppy on the palate, but then it would have to be. It's solidly malted with a caramel malt base that provides more flavor than it ought to thanks to the underwhelming amount of hop flavor. The beer is still impressively bitter however. Puckery white grapefruit pith is the star of the show, it's just too bad that it doesn't shine all that brightly.

The finish is arid and even more bitter, but like what came before, it lacks flavor. Thankfully, the light-medium mouthfeel isn't nearly as busy with carbonation as I had feared. In fact, it now feels almost flat. It seems that the bubbles wore themselves out in fairly short order.

Were it not for the fishing boat and crossed oars on the silk-screened label, I would have wondered whether Paddle Me IPA wasn't a beer dedicated to aficionados of S & M. That might at least have made it somewhat interesting. As is, it could use a fairly comprehensive overhaul. "Thank you sir, may I have another?" definitely does not apply.

Cloudy off-orange in color, sturdy milky head.
citric aroma starts quiet, then opens up prickly pine, grapefruit, apple, getting louder...reminds me of certain English IPAs I've known.
Taste: smooth and creamy, lightly hoppy, but terribly, terribly light in body and texture, vanishes right off the palate, makes a clean getaway. What fine flavor there is stands on top of a big ball of nothing. Drinks easy, but offers little enjoyment.
nice try, though.

Paddle Me is an all around easy drinking Northwest IPA. Its taste parameters share some kinship to an English bitter with its gentility and restraint. But the aroma says IPA - fresh hops and active yeast.

I enjoyed a pint at the Siletz Roadhouse where it was served with good lather a touch too cold. It is pale, honey-gold, well charged, and hosts a fine particulate haze. A stadium wall of constant white lace trails from a head that starts bold then retreats to a thin film. Paddle Me has the easiness of a comforting session ale and the inviting informality of a masochistic name.

This ale is mistakenly advertised as "excessively extreme." Not so. It is not a brew of brazen greatness, but of endearing friendship that stands out for its creamy texture and quaffability.

It pours a light amber color with a thin wisp of a head, though it leaves some decent lace. The aroma has floral and pine hop aromas (EKG is noticeable). The body is light with minimal taste coming from the malts. It comes off as more of a hop tea. The finish is crisp, dry and bitter with an herbal, piney character. The is little complexity to this beer. Nothing stupendous, but good if you like hops.

It's a good IPA, but nothing spectacular. You'd better like hops. The aftertaste is both bitter and dry -- not bad, but it gets old after a while so I wouldn't be drinking a bunch of them. I'm glad I tried it, but I don't think I'd go out of my way for it.
