Save-Mor Beer and Pop Warehouse
4516 Browns Hill Road
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

I decided to give this place an updated review because things have changed alot since the new P.A. Alcochol sales laws have come into force and it's slightly more lenient. It used to be that distibuters only sold beer by the case and this one was one that you could count on to have what you wanted, or would do their best to get it for you. The selection has always been outstanding. They started selling 12 packs along with their cases quite a while ago and then went of to re-designed their shelves to make way for six packs and large fancy craft bottles. They now have several isles designated for these purposes. I love their selection, but the workers their are not like the old dedicated staff that they used to have. They don't really go out of their way to accomadate your needs. Also, they tend to keep the six packs on their shelves for several seasons. I noticed that a six pack of an IPA I bought had lost some of it's flavor profile because it has been sitting on their shelves for a few seasons. One of the guys tried to convince me that the IPA I had just has fruity notes when it had none at all. I think he was concerned that I was looking for something that I would never find with an IPA, which is utter nonsense. I have been going to buy beer at their store since they used to sell only cases and I feel like the staff was a bit more respectful and honest. I guess, don't expect to find a fresh six pack of IPA's sitting on their shelves. They couldn't find one for me and honestly didn't know where to locate one. Know your product people!

This is a good beer distributor by Western PA standards, but that's not saying much at all. They have a pretty solid selection of craft beer across the country ranging from year arounds to seasoning

This is my go-to spot for cases. They always seem to have what I'm looking for and their prices have proven to be the lowest in the city. Another thing I like is their mailing list. It sends release notices on everything coming in. This is especially useful when you're waiting on that particular occasional release. They also have a good bit of tastings...and I love free beer(it's the only thing better than beer!!).

Okay I've been hearing about this place for awhile, and I've driven by it more than a 100 times over the last ten years. Tonight I stopped in looking for some Fathead's Hop Juju DIPA, it's been gone for a long time. They had six cases, but this place is what it says it is...a beer and pop warehouse, cases of everything from wall to wall, with a walk in cooler in the back of the house...they didn't keep much stock cold, but they did have every brewery and beer I know of that is sold by the case in the Pittsburgh market I was asked for assistance by at least three different employees while I was there, and I got to take beer with one of the guys stocking beer. The sixtel selections for micros seemed well above the standard that most distributors sell. This place is in Homestead take the last exit on your right before the Squirrel Hill tunnels and drive like your going to the waterfront, there's a Wendy's on your left before you cross the High Level bridge, it's right beside it. Overall, I'm happy I stopped in cases were on average around standard 30 to 40 bucks for micros with some specialties hitting 50 to 80 bucks a case. One that I wanted to try was from Terrapin their new Mosaic Red IPA...not for $51.99...on the other hand they had a DuClaw beer I've never seen something with chocolate raspberries for $36.99. They are doing an email list that you can sign up on their website with release emails on new and exciting beer releases...for example this place had an allotment of 20 cases of HopSlam this year...I will be signing up.

I recently did a Winter/Christmas beer exchange with 24 participants and 24 cases at various price points, and Save-Mor came through in a big way. They were easy to work with and very responsive to what I requested/needed. My emails were answered very promptly by the owner, and he pulled cases out for me when they were delivered. The prices were reasonable, and they had the best selection I have seen in this area. I plan to use them for all 4 of our beer exchanges in 2012! I highly recommend them!

I have a love-hate relationship with this store. The selection is large, fantastic and growing by the day. Unfortunately, the store treats the product about as carefully as a block of concrete. The staff apparently makes no attempt to remove past date product from the shelves. Perhaps the greatest injustice is the owner makes no attempt whatsoever to control temperature in the store in the summer when Pittsburgh temps climb easily into the 80s and often into the 90s. If you don't grab the beer as it comes off the delivery trucks...well, caveat emptor.

This rather characterless case shop has good-to-excellent prices and a very good selection but much of the craft beer seems to be far from fresh. The cases of Green Flash Hop Head Red and West Coast IPA were bottled in mid-May and I was there on November 6th. Most of their stock of Great Lakes beers were within a few days to a few weeks of their best by dates. Several other brands I checked were similar - caveat emptor. If this warrants an A- rating by Western Pennsylvania standards the Pittsburgh consumers need to push harder to improve their local beer scene.

Check the dates on the beer at Save-Mor. I found several cases of 8-month old beer today and when I asked the clerk, they insisted they were delivered that very day.

Also, check the boxes... they do not refrigerator the Stone brews, even though the boxes explicitly state to keep them refigerated.

In general, they have a good selection with several hard to find beers. The prices are reasonable-to-a bit pricey.

They also have a cigar shop, snacks and lottery.

It's difficult to exit the main entrance, so I'd suggest driving behind the Wendy's and exiting at the light that services the next strip mall closer to the Homestead Greys bridge.

Visited on a Saturday afternoon. Place was busy as you may expect for a Saturday.

Place is well organized and clean. I liked how beer was grouped by State and/or Country. Made finding something that much easier.

Quality/Selection: was pretty good for cases. I wasn't looking for anything in particular but was quite impressed with what they offered. Selection was very good, too much to list here. I actually came here to see their Sixtel keg selection. There selection is OK, nothing that particularly interested me and would make me want to come back.

Value: was very good for cases. I did some price comparisons. ie..Bear Republic was $45/case, whereas McBrooms sells it $50/case. I noticed this for other popular brands as well. Prices seemed to be anywhere from a $1 to $5 difference compared to other places.

Service: did not require service as I was just browsing.

Overall: if you are looking for Micro cases at good prices then this should be a stop for you. But I am mostly disappointed with Pittsburgh area Beer Distributors when it comes to Sixtel kegs. None seem to carry anything other than the standard offerings and even those are limited. I really believe this is a package that is becoming really popular with people because of the smaller size. I would really like to see a Beer Distributor specialize in Sixtels as I believe this is a missed opportunity that no one seems to be interested in!

Well laid out for browsing. Prices clearly marked. A great spot for those wanting to buy full cases.

Great selection of US micros and macros,as well as typical European brews.
Pennsylvania brews the cheapest priced, but very good prices on brews from across the country, including 12 packs of Bombers.
Variety packs, for those that are interested.
Variety of sodas, for those so inclined.

Very easy to get to, off the 376 ( Homestead, Beechwood Blvd ), and from the South Side.

I recommend this place for those that buy by the case.

A hidden gem in the Pittsburgh distributor scene. Not quite the esoteric selection of McBrooms or Mellinger's (in its prime), but still a solid representation of craft beers. Typical large, industrial style distributor setting. Most of the craft beers are situated towards the back left as you walk in.

Selection consists of most of the major US micros and quality imports available to Western PA. Cases are displayed in large industrial shelves or in the occasional floor display, easy to browse (compared to McBrooms or Mellingers). Only drawback is the lack of more limited releases (example: no Southern Tier bombers). Although I havent inquired if they would be willing to carry them if demand was there.

One of the benefits of shopping here is that prices are clearly marked on the shelves. The prices themselves are extremely reasonable for Pittsburgh. They had cases of Stone Oaked AB for $58, which given what singles are going for is not bad at all.

I have not dealt with the employees, but they get service credit for maintaining a fairly up to date price list of what they carry on their website, plus the clear display of prices on the shelves mentioned earlier.

Worth the stop if you're in the area. Dont expect to find any hidden gems, but good quality at reasonable prices.

Wow, talk about selection.

From the outside this place looks like a macro swiggers paradise, but once through the doors and down the first aisle, a beer drinkers oasis awaits.

The largest craft beer CASE selection i've ever come across in PA.

Decent pricing, and once the horrid construction is finished on Browns Hill Rd., easily accessible from the Waterfront, and Squirrel Hill/Oakland.

Plus a website that lists the beers (not sure about the availability of all these: ), and an email newsletter announcing new releases. I can't speak on the service as i grabbed a case, browsed and was out, but i'll give them a high ranking for the website and newsletter.

If i need a case of beer and i'm in the Pittsburgh area, this is my new spot.

Stuck in traffic on Browns Hill right where 2 lanes turn into one due to the Highlevel Bridge construction. I look to my left and see Save-Mor Beer & Pop warehouse. I figure, what the hell, at worst I can come out with a case of Straub's.

I walk in past the chips and Perrier water, and low and behold, I find one of the best craft and micro beer selections (cases not bottles) in the area.

I have driven by this place at least a hundred times, I would have never guessed they were stocking what they do. A super healthy selection of Troeg's, Victory, Great Lakes, Dogfish, Saranac, ect. And not just one case of each variety, they were at least 3 or 4 cases deep in everything.

A grabbed a case of Sunshile Pils, and was out.

What a pleasant surprise on a Tuesday afternoon. This will be my new stop for cases as it is only 15-20 minutes away. Once they finish the bridge construction I can probably get there in 10 minutes. Plus a little swerve action and I can stop in on my way back from work.

Don't let the name or wrapper fool you. If you are in the market for a decent variety pack or case of micro brew, check this place out. I think you will be surprised, I know I was. Their web site is worth a look, it list what they carry, with the prices, a definite plus!
