Pours a dark chestnut brown color with deep mahogany edges and a two finger beige head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Very good retention with streaks of soapy lacing coating the glass on the way down.
Slightly earthy aroma with a complex malt bill. Nice balance of roast and silky sweetness. Not much IPA character within only subtle earthy hops. A touch of grass and pine followed by silky chocolate, lactose, toast, oatmeal and coffee bean. A little bit of peppery spice in here with cinnamon and brown sugar. Almost like an artisan chili chocolate bar. Some nice elements in the nose but surprisingly lacking in hop character.
Fuller end of medium body with a stronger hop presence than the aroma suggests. Earthy hop bitterness with grassy pine and resinous oils countered by a decent balance of roasted and sweet malt notes. Bitterness is countered by hints of bittersweet dark chocolate, oatmeal, lactose, caramel, toffee, burnt toast and coffee bean. Nicely balanced and deceptively drinkable at 9.0%.
