Pours pitch black and completely opaque with a two finger beige head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting cap. Very nice retention for the style and ABV, taking a while to settle and leaving sporadic streaks of lacing behind.

Intense aroma with a combination of musty funk, charred oak, vinous dark fruit, roasted malt and autumnal spice. Very complex with the barrel notes, wild yeast and earthy tones bouncing off of each other. Some toothpick, toasted coconut and vanilla up front along with vinous berries and red wine sweetness. This was aged in red wine barrels for a year and it shows. Hints of oak, grape, dark cherry, currant and other berries yet the barrel notes don't completely overwhelm the nose. The spices and robust malt notes cone through with hints of cardamom, ginger and cinnamon along with roasted coffee, dark chocolate and burnt toast. The funky bugs/wild yeast are faint but show up a bit more as it warms. There's a really unique combination of elements in the aroma resulting in a beer that smells different than anything I've come across before. Think bretted, red wine BA pumpkin stout.

Not quite as complex as the nose hinted at with boozy sweetness, roasted malt and very strong autumnal spice notes. Strong barrel character but the vinous red wine notes take a back seat to charred oak and funky yeast. Dry, bretty effervescence along with somewhat acrid, burnt malt and heavy potpourri like spice. Hints of clove, cinnamon, allspice and ginger but the pumpkin pie/dessert like spices found in the aroma are muted. The robust, burnt malt notes are prominent with oatmeal, burnt coffe grinds, dark chocolate and toast. In need of sweetness for balance and stronger vinous fruit character from the barrel. Also, the spice profile could be a bit more complex. Not a bad beer overall but it mostly tastes like dry brett, charred oak, burnt malt and musty, earthy spices. Doesn't live up to the promise of the aroma.

Bottle lovingly brought back from San Diego by my wife, thanks honey! Pours solid black color with a good sized frothy tan head that shows moderate retention and lace. Aromas of dark sugar, spice, a nice red wine oakiness, and a very light lactic tartness. The flavor is quite spicy with a solid dark sugary malt base to it. Big alcohol presence as well as some sharp tannins and vinous notes. Medium body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a creamy spicy sugary mouthfeel. Decent brew, I’m glad I got a chance to try it, but not my favorite offering from Stone.

General: I got this bottle at the stone San Diego tasting room, a very nice place. This is part of the 12.12.12 vertical epic ale based on the label. It is aged in red wine barrels, is 11.3% and is 500 mL. I poured this into my New Belgium tulip glass.

Appearance: This is dark black with a dark tan head on it. The head is only fairly persistent and seems to diminish pretty quickly. The head is very small bubbles, almost like a froth on the top of the beer rather than a head.

Aroma: The red wine barrel aging is front and center. On the background is an all-spice scent and a cinnamon. It's different, that's for sure.

Mouthfeel: This is a pretty thick beer that lingers on the palette for a long time. The tastes stay with you for a while, not sure that's a good thing.

Taste: Eh not a big fan. There are a lot of flavors going on with this beer. The red wine barrel is very pronounced but the flavors are crazy in this. each time I look for a new flavor, I find it, it doesn't matter what it is. I thought I had a scent of coffee, it was in the flavor profile. I thought there was all-spice and in the flavor there were definitely big hits of all-spice. I thought there was a mint aroma but there wasn't a mint flavor, this is a weird beer.

Overall: There is a lot going on with this beer. I'd pass on this if it was offered to me. This isn't my style. Not one of my favorite Stone beers.
