Formerly Stone Xocoveza For The Holidays & The New Year

Our chocolaty, winter-spiced mocha stout is back. This insanely delicious take on Mexican hot chocolate is crafted with cocoa, coffee, pasilla peppers, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. First brewed in 2014 with San Diego homebrewer Chris Banker after his recipe was named the winner of our annual homebrew competition, it quickly became a cross-country sensation as craft beer media and fans cheered for Stone Xocoveza…and clamored for more. We too loved this beer, so of course we caroled ¡Claro que sí!

Now gifted with a new name, Stone Xocoveza for the Holidays & the New Year has joined our eminent lineup of special releases. We’re releasing it just in time for that time of the year when the joyous spirit of giving is in the air and good behavior is generously rewarded.

Bottle picked up locally, enjoyed from a beer hunter snifter.

a - brew pours a watery black with a thin off white head that didn't hang too ling. spotty lace at best.

s - nose is a nice blend of chocolate, cinnamon, and peppers. Very subtle and nicely balanced brew compared to the others of this ilk. Milk stout is also a softer interpretation for these. Really smells amazing.

t/m/o - taste picks up where the nose leaves off. Milk chocolate roast glazed over with cinnamon and some peppers. Really tasteful mix with everything in the right place. Where this one is drastically different than Mexican cake and hunah in my eyes is in the mouthfeel. This beer is way lighter and softer. While it supports the flavors well, I like these flavors to be in a chewier bigger beer. More like a cake. Great beer though. Get it if you can.

A: black stout body off a dark brown-black pour; billowy mocha head a few fingers high left some brief lace behind...

S: rich dark roasty malts, underscored with chocolate and cocoa, and hints of brighter spice like cinnamon and nutmeg

T: up-front dark roasted cocoa malts, vanilla and heat hit the palate simultaneously; holiday notes like that of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and allspice at play in the background; mellow espresso with just a touch of sweetness...

M: smoothly bittersweet chocolate wraps itself around the tongue, drying finish with slight chalk; mild with a trace of char... slight tingle on the tongue...

O: an exceptional effort again by Stone and collaborators - in the same vein as Mexican Cake, Indra Kunindra, and others, brings together classic Imperial stout characteristics, with a great coffee undertone and the infusion of interesting and potentially prickly spices. Do not take a pass.

Bomber to a snifter, bottled 8/23

Pours black with a finger of mocha colored foam. Moderate carbonation from the sides, no real visibility, okay retention, great lacing 4.5/5

Smells pretty complex. Upfront espresso coffee, followed by chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, spiced nutmeg and clove, finishing with some alcohol. Smell is spot on with the ingredients listed on the front of the bottle, everything comes together really well 4.5/5

Taste follows really well. Lots of coffee followed by chocolate, cinnamon, a little peppery spice, vanilla, clove and nutmeg, finishing with some alcohol. The peppers go really well with the cinnamon giving it a nice kick 4.5/5

Feel is a heavy body, thick and sticky. Very smooth and creamy. Mild spiciness and bitterness, alcohol concealed well. A sipper for sure that could entertain me for hours 4.75/5

Overall holy shit this is great. By far the best Stone collab I've had, hands down the best so far of the past two years. Stone: hire on Chris Banker! 4.55/5
