A modern American pale with Mandarina Bavaria hops
First Release: April 2015

This decidedly American West Coast pale ale represents the next chapter in our brewing story. Showcasing the full essence of vivid Mandarina Bavaria hops plucked from the storied fields of Germany, it presents bright flavors of peach and orange against a crisp, spicy, biscuity backdrop. We’re glad you’re with us on this journey!

Look: Pours great big rocky off white head that quickly dissipates to about a half a finger high leaving no lacing. Pretty clear and copper in color. Fine sediment floaters.

Smell: Sticky syrupy malts. A little resin hops.

Taste: Pretty much just grapefruit hops and bitter. No malts to be noticed.

Feel: Pretty full bodied. Kinda buttery.

Overall: Not a good APA. No malt and over the top astringent hops. Steer clear.

Served in a snifter tasting glass from the bottle.

Appearance: Transparent amber with minumal bubbles and an off white head rising roughly quarter of an inch. No stickiness to the glass.

Smell: Light hops feeling a bit like yeast with lightly hovering the nostrils. Not the most pleasant scent.

Taste: Bitter and lightly malty. Has a Light sour finish to the beer.

Mouth: It is somewhat sticky, pairing it with pretzels has raw semi spoiled hop feel. Not super appetizing but has a definitely medium to full body.

Overall: Good to give away to your up and coming beer enthusiast. Much room for improvement and would take it if I had limited options. Salud!

Reviewed from (long-standing) notes. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Cigar City Brewing pint glass.

A: Pours crystal clear but a very deep gold - seems oddly dark for an APA. Forms a couple finger's worth of white head with average retention.

S: Mango and tangerine hops, some grassiness and biscuit malts. There's a tinny or thin metallic aroma as well, that shouldn't be there.

T: Grassy hops up front - reminiscent of noble hops. Some toasted malts and bits of bitter citrus. Some naked alpha bitterness (present in a lot of Stone hoppy beers) towards the in. There is still just a touch of that tinny flavor as well. Finishes clean but led by that naked alpha bitterness.

M: Body is on the heavy side for style, and the alcohol seems strong for an APA (though far from "hot"). Good amount of carbonation sensation.

O: This almost seems to have some lager characteristics, with being so clear in appearance, the toasted malts, the very clean finish, and the strange albeit restrained hop flavors for an APA. I might have guessed a hoppy Oktoberfest beer? It isn't a good APA, and really not a particularly good beer. I hope they rethink this one and launch Pale Ale 3.0 soon. Or at least Pale Ale 2.5.
