none of us in our tasting group have ever had a beer like this. mikkeller did some hoppy coffee stuff, but with the lactose sugar and all, this is a radically unique beer, and we all kind of dug it. pale in color, but it does looks like a little coffee has been blended in, as it has some darker shades to it under its big off white head. smells amazing, but way way way more coffee than ipa. there is cocoa there too, but the rich earthy coffee really drives it. the flavor starts sweet from the lactose, and rich with the java and chocolate, a cool combination in a pale beer, like some of those golden stouts that came around last year, but i am missing a lot of the ipa aspect. its bitter in the finish, but its not real hoppy in terms of its flavor. i dont get much hops in the nose either, and even though i dont really miss their presence, i was curious to see how they would taste with all these ingredients. the answer is that they dont taste like much because the coffee and cocoa overpower them. good bitter balanced finish though, and a well hidden alcohol strength amidst all this body. i love experimentation and beers that make me think or take me new places, and this definitely does that. well done from stone!

Draught pour at Kettner Street Store. Pours an amber color with a finger of white head. Nose is heavy chocolate and follows with a hint of coffee and hops. Taste starts bitter and finishes sweet. Runs the spectrum of the palate surprisingly well. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, carbonation solid, and the finish dry and slightly bitter. Excellent beer I'd happily buy again.

If you are looking for an intense coffee flavor in a beer other than a stout, this is for you. A tasty and well made beer it is but...in my opinion the coffee flavor is more compatible with a stout. The coffee flavor of this beer completely blocks out any hop influence and with an IPA, I'm looking for hop flavor, not coffee flavor. I have tried to review this beer to style, but there's not alot to compare it to since I haven't had many coffee IPAs. Bottom line - if I had asked for a taste before ordering a full pour, I probably wouldn't have had the full pour. It just happened that a group of Stone reps ordered it and recommended it to me right before the GABF so I decided to take the plunge. Now I know to avoid coffee IPAs.

A: Looks like a wonderfully crafted IPA. Golden/Amber hue with a white head
S: Looks can be deceiving! Chocolate, coffee, and some faint hops. smells like a stout
T: Yup! This is delicious! Chocolate and coffee up front, definite taste of a stout with a hop finish
M: Creamy. the lactose sugar presents a very creamy mouthfeel.
O: Definitely one of the best Stone beers I have ever tried. I never got to try Dayman Coffee IPA, but if you are in San Diego do yourself a service and try this beer or get a growler to go!

Had this at Stone Liberty Station.
Looks like a beautiful IPA and tastes like a smooth, creamy, sweet chocolatey stout! Hops are present and balanced but chocolate / mocha flavors take center stage. AAA+++ would drink again.
