Stone Xocoveza - Extra AñejoStone Xocoveza - Extra Añejo
Notes: Stone Xocoveza Extra Anejo will grace the brewery’s coveted Quingente Millilitre Series, a souped-up version of the original release. In addition to the cocoa, coffee, peppers, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg that was added to Xocoveza Mocha Stout, Stone has aged this edition in both red wine barrels and tequila barrels.

The base beer is the recipe of 2014 Stone Homebrew Competition winner Chris Banker, an intensely flavorful milk stout brewed with coffee and spices to mimic the rich flavors of Mexican hot chocolate.

Stone Xocoveza Extra Anejo will be available in 500ml bottles in very limited quantities.

Pours black, brown highlights on top. Cap with dense lacing.

Coffee, caramel, spirits, spices, cocoa, vanilla, on and on.

The base beer is both simplified and complexified by the barrel aging. Added notes of dry oaky scents. Cinammon, nutmeg, chocolate with the barrel notes.

Dry mouthfeel, ABV controlled, medium carbonation. Could be a bit more dense and rich. A bit of a longer aging period might help?

Great. But I like the original better, needs tweaks.

Poured in to a Teku glass. The head was out of control, over carbonated. As the beer warmed up the smell became very complex, clearly the best part of this beer. Chocolate, cinnamon, coffee, vanilla, and pepper, with hints of tequila. The smell is exquisite! The taste does not follow through. The beer is too thin in my opinion, which takes away from what should be a rich tasting beer. It tastes like watered down Mexican Cake.

From a bottle purchased at Stone. Nose is pretty standard, but the taste is extremely interesting. You really get the tequila barrel as well as the wine barrel in the flavor of the flavor of the stout. May not be for everyone, but in terms of complexity this beer is pretty top notch.

Mexican spice aroma is very present, hint of chocolate, dark in color, poured with a 1 in head, spicy on the tongue, slight carbonation, drinks like a coffee porter.

Looks fantastic. Tons of lacing, two inches of head on the initial pour, good retention.
It has the usual Xocoveza smell, which to me is a bit like potpourri. Lots of nutmeg and chilies, hints of cinnamon and coffee. Nothing in the smell is suggesting wine or tequila barrels to me though. It smells like base Xocoveza.
I can't say that the wine or tequila barrels are particularly obvious in the flavor, but they do mellow out some of the spices in the base. That makes me enjoy this more than the base. Just for me personally, I feel like the base is over-spiced. This one has more of a nuance and balance, but it's also less flavorful. It's also has a bit of a green pepper flavor, and it leaves a nice little spicy tingle at the finish.
The mouthfeel is a slight disappointment. The carbonation gives it a nice creaminess, but it's a little thinner than I would have expected from barrel aging the base Xocoveza.
It quite an enjoyable and surprisingly mellow beer, and I'm glad I finally tried it.

Lots of things going on here. Cocoa, cinnamon, vanilla and coffee with a finish of pepper and heat. A couple of things that were not ideal for me: a touch thin with more carbonation than I would prefer. More importantly, any Bordeaux and tequila barrel characteristics were overpowered by the above flavors. For me, a little less would have been more, allowing some of the subtle barrel flavors to show through. A great beer that maybe could have been more.

Poured from the Quingenti 2015 series, Batch 6. 8.5% ABV.

Pours jet black, lots of frothy tan foam. Thin lace on the glass.

You get lots of coffee and cinnamon with hints of red wine on the nose. Sweetness accompanies in the back, dominated by chocolate. Can’t really find the tequila so far.

A lot more bitter than on the nose. Lots of ground coffee and slight spice. I am getting some slight tequila booze and a very evident red wine finish that lingers heavily.

A thinner body body than expected, and frothier too.. this is something I’ve noticed more and more with Stone Quingentis that have sat for awhile.

Overall, this is finally the last Xocoveza variation I needed to try. Although it’s not my favorite, I like that I can find every component, and they blend nicely.

The dark marble brown body features mucho cabeza gigantesco. An absolutely enormous, foamy, spongy head builds to the point I could only pour two fingers of beer before letting it rest--and this was in the largest tulip I've seen, and I wasn't even pouring vigorously.

I smell a milkiness that is overwhelmed by a wine barrel attribute lending an off-putting metallic, Brillo-pad like presence. This is followed by pasilla pepper, chocolate, and herbal aromas. Marzipan and amaretto arise as it warms.

Roasted malt and faint chocolate flavors are caught in a battle of harsh agave liquor, gin and a confusing wine barrel presence. Coffee was more present to my old lady than me, and as such she liked it far more than I. I never noted any cinnamon.

The barrel-aging did something weird to this brew to lighten the body and create a crazy foamy, frothy head that is ever present and oddly light and unavoidable. Normally a drinkable head is a plus, but here, I'm not sure. Finish is a little hot. I find for me that regular is much better, and that this is yet another example where barrel-aging does not automatically improve an already stellar beer.

Not sure if I waited too long to crack this one. Taste is a little chalky. Still get mocha/cocoa/coffee/ a little tequila. The head on there was awesome. Huge tan khaki foamball.

2015 bottle, batch 6, poured in a snifter glass. Smell of sweet chocolate, coffee, and the tequila barrel come through. Taste resembles the aroma with an added taste of vanilla, and malts. Not as complex as the regular Xocoveza but it was still very delicious.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, black chocolates, with some light coffee notes with some light barrel notes. Taste is super complex with nice black chocolate notes with lactose, peppers, coffee with some oak and light barrel-aged notes rounding off any rough edges. Body is full with good carbonation and no overly apparent alcohol notes. Great balance of different flavours which end up working quite well together.
