First Release: July 2015
This righteously flavorful imperial stout has been a favorite among our fans—and us—since its inception in 2013. In celebration of its third brewing, we’ve upped the barrel-aging quotient for 2015, adding to the mix a version of last year’s vintage that we aged in bourbon barrels for a year. This whopping, complex stout will cellar beautifully—if you can wait that long.
Eisner Award-winning comic-book cover artist Dave “The Reverend” Johnson created the fine art for the bottle in exchange for our donation to The Hero Initiative (heroinitiative.org), a charity organization that provides retirement funds for golden-age comic book artists.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter
Pours black in color with a one-finger foamy khaki head that has decent retention. Smells of dark chocolate, roasted barley, char and oaky bourbon. Tastes of dark chocolate and roasted malt up front, followed by a soft nuttiness before finishing with plenty of barrel notes of oak, bourbon and vanilla. Medium body with moderate carbonation, creamy mouthfeel and slightly warming finish

Cracking this bad boy after 4 years, doing cellar clean-out duty.
A - Pour dark brown-black body, slight red highlights, tan head, minimal, with no sign of lacing.
S - Pungent dark fruit and chocolate hits. As you might expect, huge alcohol and barrel notes over this core.
T - Follows the nose. Raisins and chocolate, cherry and vanilla, barrel wood and slightly dry ash in finish. Age has softened this, but everything is soaked with a boozy note.
M - Low carbonation but moderate weight for something this big, strong alcohol warmth, lingering through the close.
O - A well-built heavy beer, with lots of flavor notes that still meld nicely into a cohesive whole.

July 18th, 2015 - There's a back story here that I never bothered to look up, but I am delighted at the idea that Greg Koch and Will Wheaton have met at some point. Is the beer as delightful? It is a healthy deep brown-red that lets just a shred of light peek through, and gives off that classic Stone smell, rich with malt and bubble gum and the extra sharpness of charred barrels. And that last element comes out hard in the flavor, which is rough and boozy, and reminds of the bourbel barrel aged Arrogant Bastard. It is only slightly sweet, grape at that, which I enjoy, but the ethanol might be just a bit much.

Pour: 2018 vintage into a hotel tumbler at Crystal Mountain. Jet black with a two finger tan head. Head only slowly dissipates leaving plenty of clouds and decent lacing. Very attractive.
Nose: bourbon, caramel/molasses. Some sweet malt. Maybe some pecan but hard to tell. Somewhat typical BBA stout aroma. A little surprising given the adjuncts.
Taste: unlike the nose, taste is more unique. Definite bourbon upfront but also notes of bitter chocolate, burnt caramel, dark malts. I get some pecan notes but lost a bit with the more pronounced flavors. Some rye spiciness comes through as well. Pretty well balanced. Nice sweetness on the backend.
Mouthfeel: really stands out here. Thick, rich, milkshake texture. Yet a relatively clean finish. Fairly high carbonation but suitable.
Overall: this is just diffeeent enough to make it interesting. Complex but not overdone. Not sure the pecans make a big difference but the rye does seem to add some spice and the wheat mellows out the strong bourbon and enhances the mouthfeel. Will probably look for another bottle to drink fresh and an extra to age with the one in my cellar. I would imagine this gets better with age.

This is a great stout for your buck. $16.99 6 pk, sign me up and drink it cellar into a snifter:
This is 2018 version so month old:
Look is chocolatey, dark coffee body, mocha beer with beautiful creamy head
Aroma is bourbon, pecan pie, molasses, chocolate
Taste is very similar to aroma as I can taste pecans and chocolate with some bourbon, oak flavors on the back end. very drinkable and besides bourbon flavor there is no other harsh alcohol bite.
Has a thick creamy mouthful and is a great value. I will be drinking 1 or 2 more fresh before putting some away as I heard it ages well but is delicious fresh.

Holy dark beer Batman, this beer is effing fantastic! The taste that lingers on the back of your tongue is ridiculous! Kinda sad I opened it finally but like all good beers, they must be opened and they must be drank. I will take one for the team and enjoy it. Cheers.
