Notes: Medieval-style ale brewed with elderberries
First Release: September 2015

Imagine if you will emerging from the furthest depths of the dark, misty forest of time holding a chalice (perhaps one of catholically divine caliber) filled with an ale style dating back to medieval England. We find ourselves carried by the gait of hooves (which oddly sound like someone is clacking together two empty coconut halves) and happen upon a castle siege. Insults are being hurled from the walls above from…Frenchmen? Time to run away (after one last whack at the mighty stone castle walls with a broadsword) to discuss strategy just beyond the reach of catapulted bovines. Beer brewed with elderberries is freely shared. What strategies come from this? Trojan rabbit! A brilliant ruse they’re sure to…catapult. Word to the wise, Sir Bedivere: Don’t strategize whilst drinking elderberry beer or the constables may show up at the end of your flick.

A: Pours a deep cherry juice red color with a thin off white head.

S: Smells a little strange. Herbal and a bit metallic with a touch of Welch's Grape Juice sweetness to it. Powdery malt, yeast and a little rubber.

T: Not diggin it. Tastes like watered down Nyquil fermented in a rusty container. Very medicinal with a touch of baby aspirin, rubber eraser and a dry almost tannic and metallic finish. Would not do again.

Poured into a snifter.

3.0 A: Mildly hazed mahogany color. Head formed and fell before I could make any other assessments of it.

3.0 S: The nose is really muddled and I don't know what to make of it. Burnt chocolate, blueberries, wildflowers, toasted caramel, raisin. Herbal hops. Also a lot of the Stone terroir.

2.5 T: The taste is similarly confusing. Strong peat component followed by burnt, overly caramelized toffee, toasty malts, bitter elderberry. Crab apple (without the sourness), raisin and perique tobacco, prune. It's a big mess of flavors that seem like they can coexist, but they don't.

2.75 M: This feels light and heavy at the same time. I'm not sure how else to describe it. Maybe watery velvet. It's on the lower end of carbonation.

2.5 D: I can sense the vision they had with this beer, it just didn't work out that well. Elderberries are hard to fit into anything well.

This beer is a rust colored liquid with a white head. The aroma is fascinating...Strange fruit and malt. Yeast and esters. I loved the Monty Python nods in the label. The taste is balanced, if not a bit sweet, with huge warming. Fully, boozy, and intense. Bitterness starts in the mid-taste and intensifies from there. This beer is an experience.

Appearance: pours a mahogany color with a 1/2" head that breaks down quickly.

Smell: a berry and earthy aroma are pleasant but mild.

Taste: bready malt profile with some berry flavors, earthy tones, and a moderate bitterness.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Lightly crisp from start to finish with some dryness arriving late. Long lasting earthy and berry aftertaste.

Overall: a decent beer that is slow sipping would be best enjoyed outside by an autumn fire pit.

Bottled 9/30/2015, it's 10/25/2017 - Oh GOODIE! it had time to age on the store's dime!

or maybe it did. Unfortunately, I'm not loving this one, yet I am glad that Stone does weird experiments. This one is weird.

Pours dark and murkey like I would expect from something archaic, but, well, maybe not quite THIS archaic! It's kinda got crumbly stuff floating around in there. tap. swirl. eww.

Smells like berry stuff, not really like beer. But, is this even a beer?

The taste annihilated my tongue. Yes, hops, but also hairspray ickey cheap booze flavor that cut through like my tongue was being caned. And some hop, I think this reminds you it is supposed to be beer. Sour stuff comes through, must be an elderberry flavor I guess. Fortunately I don't taste any fish/smelt! I also don't taste a shandy-like drink. It isn't. but it isn't that awkward is-it-a-beer-or-pop - this is certainly neither. But it is not a shandy, which would be worse. I picking up pepper????

Mouthfeel is syrupy and, from what I can tell with what is left of my tongue, maybe a rich fizziness exists.

Finish is akin to a tiny running chainsaw slipping down your throat. It sort of goes away in acrid agony.

Overall, this was an interesting experiment. I'm glad I tried it in a hazing sort of way. I'm glad Stone made this, and let us try it, and never did it again.

Maybe it did spoil. I didn't think something with this much alcohol COULD spoil.

I have a 2nd bottle - I think I"m going to save it for a friend tasting party just to show others what happens when you let the gnomes loose in the brewery when nobody is watching.

Picked up a bomber at TW Arrowhead in mid-October for $7.99. Bottled on 9/3/15, received at TW on 9/18.

Beer poured a brownish burgundy with a small head that dissipated quickly.

Nose is hints of smoked malts and dark fruits.

Taste is slightly smokey, slightly tart, slightly bitter with the abv well hidden.

Feel is medium to full bodied and fairly smooth.

Overall this brew is unique, not bad, but not great. Worthy of a shot if you want to try something different. I am always a sucker for these Stone one-offs as you never know what you are going to get into and the price of admission is reasonable!

Have to love a Monty Python reference, especially when it's beer related, too.

Pours garnet with brown throughout. Insignificant off-white head leaves no lace.
Smell is fruity and grainy.
Taste is fruity, woody, grainy, alcohol, light hops. Decent balance.
Light - medium body, very light effervescence. If beer and fruit juice had a baby, this could be it.

Clear red colored beer with essentially no head to speak of.

Smell is strongly of berry. Floral fruity berry, pretty much Roses and blueberry together. Spicy wood scent somewhere between cinnamon and sandal wood.

Starts out neutral smoky and very slightly sweet. Chest warming this is stronger than it tastes. sour taste and some woody bitterness like over steeped tea. Light camomile tea flavor.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Overall a historical ale, but not something I would buy again. Mainly I bought this because of the name.
