Style: American Black Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.40%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Just like its golden envelope-pushing counterpart, Stone Enjoy By Black IPA is intensely hoppy and should be enjoyed über fresh to experience its vibrant stone and tropical fruit flavors and dankness.

This double IPA’s dark-colored malt canvas comes from German Sinamar and from Patagonia Black Pearl barley, which adds a pleasingly smooth taste. The hop profile is predominantly Australian, featuring down-under wonders Vic Secret, Ella and Galaxy. Stone Enjoy By Black IPA is shipped immediately to ensure hopheads get their hands on it as soon as possible, as it is brewed specifically NOT to last.

Poured into a Stone gargoyle pint. Pours a very dark mahogany brown with a big, fine two finger light khaki head that keeps building for a while after pouring. Aroma of citrus and piney hops, orange family citrus, hints of tropical fruit and light toasted malt. Flavor is well melded dark toasted malt, citrus, mixed fruit, citrus and piney hops, with a very interesting lightly estery fruit, toasted malt and hop finish. Medium bodied with a nice creaminess and mouth feel. I was pleasantly surprised by this; I am a fan of Cascadian dark ales, and wasn't sure what to expect from Stone's version, although I figured it would be hoppy. This is much more integrated and interesting. The hops bill from Enjoy By is here, but somewhat muted by the darker malts, but there is a very interesting fruit flavor that develops in the finish from the interaction of the malt and hops that I really like a lot. Smoother, somewhat sweeter and less adventuresome than the Northwestern versions, this is a very nicely made and interesting black ale. A great balance of strong flavors. This is my favorite of the Enjoy By series.

This one is Enjoy by 2.14.16

L - Dark brown/black with 1 full finger of head and nice lacing left all over the top of the brew and glass all the way down

S - Huge hoppy aroma of goodness, pine, citrus

T - Like the aroma, a well balanced blend of hop goodness and earthy malt tones. Not overly bitter, perfect mix of pine and citrus. Tasty!

F - Well carbonated and medium body.

O - As good as a fresh BIPA can get in my opinion. Well done! Should become a regular in my rotation if they continue it. 9.4%? Totally hidden which is a sign of a great brew

Huge tropical aroma and a dry cocoa-on-grapefruit finish. It's a damn tasty beer. The dark malts never overpower the hops (like too many black IPAs). They add a touch of toffee to the aroma and the slightest roast to the flavor. Best combination of black roasted barley and hops I've tasted yet.

Buddy of mine managed to snag one of these. This release was very limited so happy that I got to try. L: walnut color. Minimal head. A: it smells kind of wierd. Subdued hops, some dark malt, and...bologna. It literally smells like bologna. T: still trying to put this together...i do taste the hop profile, and im getting the same nice spicy notes as i do in regular enjoy by. Actually the flavors are coming out as it warms up, and it does so pleasantly. I taste a bit of coffee flavor that is complimenting the hops. F: medium. Pretty lively feel. Overall: I like it. However, i have to measure this against the fallen "sublimely self righteous ale"....it does not hold a candle to that beer.

I was hoping for Sublimely Self-Righteous and this is not. Pitch black color with a nose of something off that doesn't smell like any style of beer. The taste follows the nose with a really weird taste. You can kind of tell its malty but its really salty and overall weird. The feel and finish all follow suit. Honestly, not a good beer.

As a replacement of Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA, this is inadequate at best. Nothing like the Enjoy By "Pale IPA" version. This one starts out bitter, with a mineral water quality that is almost astringent, which I guess are the hops, and then a slightly roasted malt character comes through mid-palate. The drinkability here is very low because of the high 9.4% alcohol content combined with the discord of flavors. I wish they would just bring back the Sublimely Sef-Righteous.

Bottle served in a tulip. The beer pours a dark brown with a tan head. The smell of the hops hit you first, than a slight bitterness of the roast, followed by the hops again. Beer is well balanced and drinks more like an IPA than a double.

Dangerous. This beer is dangerous. If you didn't notice the high abv on the bottle and just started drinking it you may end up slightly drunker than you anticipated. Dark only in color this IPA is bright and tropical with citrus and hoppy goodness for days. "Let's get Rickity-Rickety-(belch) wrecked son!"

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours black with some hints of brown. Moderate amount of bubbles and a solid two finger beige head that settles into a thin creamy layer. Lots of lacing.

Smell: A juicy, piney, and roasty hop forward aroma with a scent of citrus, pine resin, and dark roast. Upfront citrus hop hints of orange peel, mango, grapefruit, tangerine, peach, and lemon along with some berry. Big scent of pine resin along with some dank hints of cannabis. Roasted malt with hints of bitter chocolate, coffee, smoke, biscuit, caramel, and yeast. A really good juicy aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a juicy, piney, a roasty hop driven taste with notes of citrus fruit, pine, and dark roast. Upfront citrus hop notes of orange peel, grapefruit, mango, tangerine, peach, and lemon. Also some fruit notes of berries. Dank notes of pine resin and grass. Roasted malt with notes of charred toast, chocolate, coffee, biscuit, caramel, smoke, and yeast. Some candied sugar sweetness. A really good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy, oily, and fairly chewy. Drying finish. Alcohol heat is masked well.

Overall: A very good take on an Imperial Black IPA. Great juicy hop flavors with a solid presence of roasty malt.

It's a good beer but not mind blowing like normal enjoy by is. The hops don't really stand out in any way and neither does the malt. A good black ups but not exceptional.
