Style: Belgian IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.90%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
In 2008, Stone Brewmasters Steve Wagner and Mitch Steele traveled to Belgium, where they enjoyed a number of hop-forward Belgian tripels, pale ales and IPAs—beers that had taken a cue from the U.S. craft brewing movement and inspired us in return. It’s a big reason 2008’s summer season came to be known at Stone as our “Summer of the Triple.” Upon their return, they crafted Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale, the seventh beer in the 11-beer Stone Vertical Epic Ale series. Packed with floral, spicy essence from Belgian yeast plus plenty of hoppy New World character, it’s our West Coast take on hop-driven Belgian beers.

Pours a clear gold color. 3/4 inch head of a white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of orange, clove, floral, slight yeast, alcohol, slight honey, and a hint of wheat. Fits the style of a Belgian IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with a high carbonation level. Tastes of orange, clove, floral, slight yeast, alcohol, slight honey, and a hint of wheat. Overall, good appearance, aroma, complexity, but too carbonated and the blend is too spice-centric.

650ml bottle poured into an oversized wine glass.

Slight hazy in texture with bright gold amber in color, it tops with decent white frothy head with average retention. It sinks to some foamy sheet atop along with lots of lacing patch and spot being left.

Led by citrusy hop then Belgian’s yeast popping up with notes of banana, clove and peppery spice, American’s hop nicely mingles with the aroma in wide varieties ranging from tropical fruit, pine, resin, grassy and floral. Malt is there too with a sweet caramel scent and there is a hint of alcohol too.

Very fruity with a yeasty ester with notes of banana and clove spice as well as sweet with a clean yet chalky malt, hop exhibits with notes of citrus, strong resin, some piney, and herbal. Hop bitterness is just flash and quite moderate at the end where spiciness comes back to mix up in bitter and spicy aftertaste.

Medium body with smooth mouthfeel and lively crisp carbonation through the palate, refreshing, finish is pleasantly dry.

Good brew for sure but I feel that it can be more complex than this, for me, it is like the half way between Belgian and American IPA.

Pours an effervescent bronze with a pinky of cream colored head. Average head retnetion & lacing

S: Pears, grassyness

T: Pears, white grapes, breadyness with a little astringent grain up front. Sweet breadyness, dryness, slight bitter grain, pear & a little coriander, a little honeysuckle as well once this warms. Finishes with pears, grainy sweetness, with a little grassy bitterness

MF: Light/medium body with delicate carbonation

Pretty drinkable despite the ABV, compares well to its Belgian big brothers

Pours a hazy golden orange body with a lovely white head that quickly disappears. It smells sweet with yeasty & some spice hop aromas. I'm a big fan of Belgium ales, not so much for IPAs but I like this brew. Very nice flavor, banana, bready, citrus & a nice hoppy finish, salty & sweet but no bitterness. There's plenty of carbonation to tickle the tongue despite the missing head. Excellent!

Figured I would pick this up since I never seen it before but didn't figure out it was over a year old until now. Ow well the entire series held up for 12 years!

A - Still bright golden orange color if anything the carbonation is as bright as ever I never seen such a bubbly 9% brew! Head fizzes out to nothing rather quickly.
S - Exceptional Belgium IPA tons of banana and bubble gum yeasts with some semi bitter hops and a sugary backbone.
T - Quite an exceptional triple it does have a boozy finish but it has a nice body with strong hop/bubble gum yeast ratio and slight over ripe banana.
M - As said my only gripe is it drinks kind of heavy but its pretty much on style

Overall a treat of a find despite the full $8.99 price tag for a year old beer... Held up rather well so it was worth the price.

Stone Brewing '20th Anniversary Epic Ale' @ 8.9% , served from a 650 ml bottle purchased for $13
A-pour is a light gold from the bottle to a clear light gold in the glass with a small white head leaving a streaky lace along the pint
S-pungent
T-big tasting Belgian IPA , with a bitter finish
MF-mild carbonation , big full body
Ov-this beer has the wow factor

From the 22 oz bottle in a snifter. This awesome encore pours a lightly hazy amber touched golden color with a nice head of white foam that settles to a thick ring, light layer, and nice lacing. Nose of candy sugar, zesty herbal hops, and subtle yeasty goodness. The flavors exceed the nose by merit with honey and candy sugars the the front and sides, mild yeasty goodness showing signs of light banana and a touch of coriander hits middle to back, and a light yet pleasant herbal hop note falls nicely on the rear and aftertaste letting one know this is a BIPA. Excellent mouth feel, medium high carbonation level with searing alcohol on the back and sides. Excellent brew...and a pleasure to be my 1,000th review.

Cheers
