Style: Belgian IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.90%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
In 2008, Stone Brewmasters Steve Wagner and Mitch Steele traveled to Belgium, where they enjoyed a number of hop-forward Belgian tripels, pale ales and IPAs—beers that had taken a cue from the U.S. craft brewing movement and inspired us in return. It’s a big reason 2008’s summer season came to be known at Stone as our “Summer of the Triple.” Upon their return, they crafted Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale, the seventh beer in the 11-beer Stone Vertical Epic Ale series. Packed with floral, spicy essence from Belgian yeast plus plenty of hoppy New World character, it’s our West Coast take on hop-driven Belgian beers.

22 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Clear and bright amber colored body topped by a semi-durable, white head. Decent lacing.

Aroma: citrusy hops, biscuits, spicy Belgian yeast, soft ripe fruits and a hint of funk.

Flavor: Very fruity with notes of banana, generic soft ripe fruits, toasted white bread, nutmeg and clove, Hop bitterness is mild-moderate. Perhaps more malty than average for style.

Medium body with lively carbonation; pleasant dry finish.

Overall: a very good Belgian IPA.

An unusual beer, little aroma, great looks, but not much by way of a head. Beer is unusually sharp and tart but has an earthy dryness at the finish.

Pours a nice amber color with an absolutely huge white head. The head is very thick and very Belgian like, so gets points for looking authentic.

The smell is very floral to me, along with yeast and malt. Has a bit of an outdoors feel to it.

Getting fruit up front, mainly apricot, pear, and citrus. There's a bit of funk and spice, has a bit of a lingering bitterness.

Not a bad feel, pretty smooth feeling.

One of the better US made triples I have tried. Has a very Belgian character to it, and the flavors are what I expect from the style. The only downside I see is a touch too bitter at the finish, but still an above average triple overall. I think US brewers should study this one to see how a triple is supposed to look and taste like.

Pours a clear gold color. 3/4 inch head of a white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of orange, clove, floral, slight yeast, alcohol, slight honey, and a hint of wheat. Fits the style of a Belgian IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with a high carbonation level. Tastes of orange, clove, floral, slight yeast, alcohol, slight honey, and a hint of wheat. Overall, good appearance, aroma, complexity, but too carbonated and the blend is too spice-centric.

650ml bottle poured into an oversized wine glass.

Slight hazy in texture with bright gold amber in color, it tops with decent white frothy head with average retention. It sinks to some foamy sheet atop along with lots of lacing patch and spot being left.

Led by citrusy hop then Belgian’s yeast popping up with notes of banana, clove and peppery spice, American’s hop nicely mingles with the aroma in wide varieties ranging from tropical fruit, pine, resin, grassy and floral. Malt is there too with a sweet caramel scent and there is a hint of alcohol too.

Very fruity with a yeasty ester with notes of banana and clove spice as well as sweet with a clean yet chalky malt, hop exhibits with notes of citrus, strong resin, some piney, and herbal. Hop bitterness is just flash and quite moderate at the end where spiciness comes back to mix up in bitter and spicy aftertaste.

Medium body with smooth mouthfeel and lively crisp carbonation through the palate, refreshing, finish is pleasantly dry.

Good brew for sure but I feel that it can be more complex than this, for me, it is like the half way between Belgian and American IPA.

Pours an effervescent bronze with a pinky of cream colored head. Average head retnetion & lacing

S: Pears, grassyness

T: Pears, white grapes, breadyness with a little astringent grain up front. Sweet breadyness, dryness, slight bitter grain, pear & a little coriander, a little honeysuckle as well once this warms. Finishes with pears, grainy sweetness, with a little grassy bitterness

MF: Light/medium body with delicate carbonation

Pretty drinkable despite the ABV, compares well to its Belgian big brothers

Appearance: Hazy pale golden yellow. Smallish head of chunky white foam. Decent crown and cap and a bit of lacing at the start, we’ll see how it sink as we get through the glass.

Aromatics: A little on the timid side. But it is citrussy lemon and lime with pine and resin. There is some sweeter yeast notes that come through as an orange scent. Light caramel and floral sweetness also exist.

Taste: There is a bit of dust leather funk that is doused in fruit juiciness. The orange scent also makes an appearance in the flavour along with a kind of banana, honey, and some lemon zest. sadly I don’t get much of any spice that they mention on the label.

Feel: A good medium weight, with some slickness and close to buttery palate swish. It is smooth and creamy, with just a bit of carbonation to keep things shaking on the dance floor.

Overall: I never had the opportunity to try the previous years, but this one is quite nice. I really wish it wasn’t 9% because I’d love to session this one. It has a lot of great aspects I could enjoy in a number of different situations.
