Style: American Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.40%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
After brewing this intense double IPA with more than 10 different hops and consistently delivering it faster than any bottled IPA on the planet, we decided to do something different with this Stone Enjoy By IPA—we took it to another level, again. Puréed tangerines were added to the batch to create a devastatingly fresh IPA with a tang of tangerine. The flavors yielded by this addition to the recipe meld beautifully with the bitterness of the hops. True to this series, Stone Enjoy By Tangerine IPA is brewed specifically NOT to last, and should be enjoyed within 37 days.

Where is the tangerine? I get plenty of sweetness and alcohol but no tangerine. Slightly dank but not nearly as impressive as I was expecting and hoping for.

I picked up a bottle of Stone's Enjoy By $/30/16 Tangerine IPA last week for $2.79 at The Lager Mill. I like this series and I think adding Tangerine to it sounds like a really good idea, so lets see how it goes. 2016 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a IPA glass.

A- The label looks nice, it's typical for the series and it's just a little eye catching. It poured a nice hazy darker orange color that took on more of a brighter golden orange color when held to the light with a fingers worth of creamy off white head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it left a little bit of spotty lacing behind. This is a good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they impart a nice mixture of citrus rind, tropical fruit and green hop aromas and it's followed by the tangerine that's a little on the lighter side and when combined with the fruit hop aromas and the sweetness it takes on a little bit of fruity bubble gum aroma. Up next comes a slight bit of doughy yeast that leads into the malts which impart a mixture of pale malts, caramel malts and sweet malt like aroma. This beer has a very nice, it's fruity and dank.

T- The taste seems to be fairly similar to the aroma and it starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the hops still being the first to show up and they impart the same hoppy aspects that they did in the aroma, but this time they are just a little lighter and are followed by the tangerine which shows up more than it did in the aroma and it imparts a great natural tangerine like flavor that works well with this beer. Up next comes a slight bit of doughy yeas that goes into the malts which show up just as much as they did in the aroma and they impart the same aspects, but this time it's also just a little grainy. On the finish there's a higher amount of medium bitterness with a nice fruity and hoppy aftertaste. This is a very good tasting beer, the tangerine works very well with it.

M- Fairly smooth, a little crisp, a little refreshing, on the slightly thicker side of being medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel is good and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a very nice beer and a great example of the style, it had pretty much all great flavors that I expect from the enjoy by series, but it also had some great tangerine flavors that enhanced the fruitiness and they worked great with this beer. This beer has good drinkability, I could drink a couple of these, especially in warmer weather. What I like the most about this beer is the how well the tangerine was showcased in the taste and how great it blended with this beer. What I like the least about this beer is nothing, there isn't anything that I disliked or would change. I would buy this beer again when in the mood for a good fruity IPA and I would recommend it to anyone looking for the same. All in all I really enjoyed this beer, it was just how I was hoping it would be and Stone did a good job thinking a little of of the box with this one. It's one of the better beers from Stone I've had and it's a very nice example of the style. Great job guys, this is one tasty beer, keep up the hard work.

Had the 5/30/16 version on 5/21, bottle date indicates this is under a month old, and I picked it up in the freezer section so I imagine this still has a good amount of life left on it. Poured into a nonic pint, Tangerine Enjoy By comes out a bright coppery amber color, clear, with a foamy two finger head that leaves spotty lacing.

The aroma is pretty bold, big fruity hoppy notes packed with resin backed by a cloying citrus bouquet. Taste starts with a chewy malt note, but it's washed away quickly with the hops from the aroma, bitter, herbal, fruity, packed with resinous characteristics. The finish is extremely bitter and you can get the sweet citrus taste of the tangerines after the swallow.

Finish is pretty lingering, mouthfeel a little clingy. It's a big body DIPA and the tangerines found it difficult to shine against the huge bitterness and hoppiness. I think I like Unfiltered Enjoy By the best, this one just under the regular version.

Poured into a 16 oz Flying Dog tulip glass bottled on 9/26/16 straight from the fridge. Pours a very attractive yellowish orange with a 2 plus finger sticky white head that leaves excellent lace behind.

Smell is tangerine, lemon, guava, pine, and grapefruit.

Taste follows tangerine from start to finish, but not over the top, guava, lemon drops, with a piney grapefruit bitter finish. One dimensional, kinda and I love the taste. Yes, I said it.

Mouthfeel is above medium, perfectly carbonated, maybe a little dry, and drinkability is off the charts at 9.4% ABV.

Overall I love all variations of this beer and this one excels also, the tangerine is always there, but very subtle.

Had it on tap at Joes NYC. Not crazy about the all purpose glassware they served it in, but perhaps I'm nitpicking.
It poured a sunset orange with a modest crown of frothy lace.
The citric, obviously tangerines, hits you in the nose pretty intensely at first, and then somewhat fades. (Was it the glassware?)
There are notes of sweet caramel malt when it first hits the tongue. However, make no mistake about it, this one is a hops forward brew. Soon enough, the citric hops flavored hit the palate. Tangerine, grapefruit pith, lemony and zesty on the back end. Very piny. The finish is moderately dry. The bitterness is assertive but smooth, leaving no lingering off aftertastes. I would describe this as medium bodied but gillis him the mouth.
Delicious and drinkable. Another masterpiece from Stone!

L: Clear copper with plenty of visible carbonation, a small white head with fairly short retention, and some spotty lacing.

S: Very zesty orange peel, like ripping into an orange, with the bitterness of the orange pith, the characteristic Enjoy By green onion and dank resin, and a backbone of sweet biscuit.

T: Very pronounced malt sweetness, biscuit bordering on caramel. Zesty orange peel, orange pith bitterness as well. On the mid-palate they combine into an orange marmalade. Finishes with green onion and pine, a punch of bitterness, though with less bitterness than a typical Enjoy By, and some orangey sweetness. The aftertaste lingers of orange peel bitterness.

F: Mouthfeel is medium, carbonation level is nice. Slightly oily on the tongue, but finishes crisp and dry.

This is a decent beer, but is my least favorite incarnation of Enjoy By thus far. Give me more of the unfiltered, regular, or black variations, please.
